Step Sequencer Greyed Out...

After watching the Drum tutorials with Seth I thought I might just try and learn Step Sequencer as it looked like it might come in handy in track production.  I've never used it before.  But when I went to try and pull it up (in SPE8.5.3) I see it's greyed out and can't be selected.  I even tried inserting it into the tool bar but it's still not selectable.  Is this something that I might not have loaded when I installed Sonar?  Do you get an option to install it?  And if so, how do I go about just installing Step Sequencer?  Thanks in advance fellers.

Well, I went back into Sonar after posting...and it was back.  Still can't figure why it was greyed out before and wouldn't let me insert it into the tool bar.

I also occasionally find it greyed out and haven't worked out any pattern. Maybe we're both missing something?

I've found that if a clip is already selected then SS is greyed. Unselect & it's back on.

from my experience it can't be used on "simple instrument tracks". i.e. when you insert a soft synth and the little window pops up with the "insert soft synth options". Don't use the "simple instrument track" option but rather make a midi source track and an audio output track (and you can tuck them into a track folder).
If I remember correctly, that would be the tick boxes 2,3 and 4 from the top (I'm writing this from memory)

Hope this helps,

I've started using the step sequencer after watching a couple of tutorials. It really is a great way of laying down drums. I've tried all sorts, prv, keyboard pads, playing a midi kit and find the step sequencer one of the better ways, especially if I'm looking for that "j'ne sais quoi" - you can loop it over bass lines and it's like jamming with a bass player, just keep playing around until you hit something you like.

And don't forget you can convert midi clips to step sequencer clips.

The Step Sequencer is only enabled if you a) have a MIDI track selected, AND b) do not have a normal MIDI clip selected. It needs the former to know where to write data to, and cannot be used with the latter.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I also seem to recall that Seth was able to insert flams and ghost rolls with SS ( I'll go back and check the video) but when I tried fiddling with the flam controlls, etc... I got no change at all to my snare.
