Step Sequencer Proper Usage

How does one use the step sequencer?
I have a drum track setup and I would like to use multiple step sequencer patterns on this track.
Sometimes I would like to copy and paste the same pattern several times.
This doesn't work well for me. Is there a tutorial on how to properly use the step sequencer?

    A step sequencer pattern is generally one measure. You can drag it out for as long as you like - or cntrl+drag the clip, which makes a copy. If you copy a pattern but want to alter it then you have to 'unlink the step sequencer clips' and you do this by 'right clicking' on the copied clip and at the bottom of the menu that opens is three tiny grey arrows, which leads to a sub menu, which has 'unlink the step sequencer clips'

    How I use the step is I insert either session drummer 3 , Roland groove synth,ect.. I click the step sequencer toggle in the pluging itself, up comes the step , I write my drum kick then, leave it alone and open up another instance , and create another step, and write the rest of my percussion, I leave the drum track alone so its easy to sidechain it if need.. If I need to change the patterns I clip drag out to where I want then bounce and open again.. or you can insert a midi track copy clip and change your midi settings..

    Computer - Intel Q9550, Intel BX48bt2 MB, W8 64 bit. 8 gb Ram, SSD  
    Hardware - Tascam Fw1884 Control surface only, Ni S49 Komplete Kontroll,Roland Quad Capture, Ni Machine,Kore, Focusrite A/D converter, Blue Mic, Roland Gaia, Akai Mpk49, Yamaha HS80 Monitors.
    Software - Sonar Platinum , Vengeance VPS bundle,Sugar Bytes Effectrix, Turnado, NI Komplete 10 Ultimate, Dune, Rob Papen  Blade , Delay, Punch Evolved.

    Lets say I make a 1 measure pattern, then drag it out so it repeats for 8 measures. Then I decide I want to change the pattern, I go in and move a kick and a high hat hit. Now the new beats don't play correctly. What gives?

    Not quite sure what you mean?

    On a pattern that you drag out, if you change the step sequencer then all eight measures will change the same. It changes to what you put in the step sequencer.

    And you use the Sonar play button - not session drummer's play button or the step sequencer play button!
