Step Sequencer not showing notes in existing clips

Hi,
Newbie here. First post.  I did look for this answer, and read the tech ref, but i'm stumped.  I'm running X2a and I open a new project, insert Superior Drummer, create a step sequencer pattern, play it back, etc, everything is fine.  Then I x-out of step sequencer and can see my clip with data in it in my track.  If I load the piano view on that clip, I can see my notes.  But if I double click on it, when step sequencer comes up, the matrix is blank.  My notes are not there.  It's like it loaded a new SS clip/window. I'm sure it's just a setting, but I can't find it and it makes no sense to me as a default behavior.  8.5PE didn't work like this.  Please help.
Thanks.

What happens if you drag the clip into the SS?

If I drag the clip into the SS window, the notes show up for that instance only.  If I close the SS window and double click on the same clip again, the notes do not appear.

In another thread you mention using a drum map.  I have read about problems using drum maps and the step sequencer in X2 (apparently confirmed by CW). You are better off not using a drum map if you intend to use the step sequencer.

I made a post on an X3a thread because it was the exact same issue, but to remove any confusion, i'm only using X2a, and have never installed X3.  These are all new clips I've created in X2. I originally created the map/clip in X2, and then updated to X2a hoping it would fix the issue.  Maybe I should start a completely new project now that X2a is running?

Do not use a drum map if you plan on using the step sequencer in X2 or X2a. http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2901903

Hmmn.  Not using drum maps with X2.  I've been using 8.5PE for years and its SS with drum maps.  It's great.  I upgraded to X2, but if I can't load a drum map with it, that's a bummer. Sounds like X3 doesn't fix this.  Rose is displeased...  What to do....

just double click the ss clip twice.
and yes, drum maps work fine...

@Swamptooth - I had all sorts of issues with drum maps and Step Sequencer, and was explicitly told by Cakewalk tech support folks that they do not intend for folks to use Step Sequencer with drum maps.

For me, I converted those clips to midi clips and then I could properly edit.

Here is the relative content from the email I received from Cakewalk:

"Step Sequencer clips do not open correctly when a track is assigned to a drum map.  I'm hoping to get that addressed. In the meantime, avoid using drum maps with SS. Use the PRV with the drum pane in that scenario."

So, since then I have stopped using drum maps when sequencing with Step Sequencer.

I seem to be in Bob's camp.  Swamptooth, can we do a quick test?  Can you open a quick test project, insert a drum program(maybe session drummer since we both have it), point the midi track's output to a drum map, open step sequencer, create a sample pattern, close SS, and then double click on the clip to see if the notes show up?  I'd like to try the exact same experiment as you to see if it's some other variable.
    thanks.

Followed your test. The notes do not show up in the SS BUT, I can get the notes to appear in the empty SS by adding one more step. Click the drop down menu in the clip and select Step Sequencer.

Ok, thanks.  That actually doesn't work for me.  Or it might work once, but doesn't the next time.  If you subsequently close that ss window and double click on the clip again, do the notes appear or do you need to select SS from the drop down menu every time?

    The behavior is consistent.

Double-clicking the loop will open an empty Step Sequencer. First time, every time.

In order to get SONAR to repopulate the empty Step Sequencer select it from the clip drop down. First time, every time.

I believe my suggestion was to double click the clip once which will open step sequencer, then wiith step sequencer open double click the same clip.

Yes, as long as the clip MIDI editor is Step Sequencer, double-clicking the clip twice will open and populate the Step Sequencer.

Saints be praised.  Both ways work.  Double clicking the clip again puts the notes into the SS window.  And selecting SS from the top right icon, after SS window is open, also populates the notes.  I'm ok with this one extra step.  I'll use the double clicking twice method.  it's unfortunate it doesn't just work like it did in 8.5, but it's close enough.
Thanks everybody! Now back to the music.
