Stereoid Bouncer: not recommended

This is a public apology to anyone who downloaded and used the free Stereoid Bouncer on my recommendation.

I've used it for a long time because it offers a way to properly pan stereo tracks, but I have since discovered that it has problems that make it unsuitable.

My first clue was a series of crashes that I reported to CW because they occurred while I was testing the 8.0.2 release. They turned out to be caused by Stereoid Bouncer.

Since S8 now comes with the Channel Tools plugin, we now have an alternative and a native solution to the stereo panning problem. I've been gradually converting to Channel Tools and removing Stereoid Bouncer.

Yesterday, I pulled up an old project and experienced a lot of dropouts even though CPU usage was fairly low. Playback would just halt for a few seconds, similar to the hesitation problem that was introduced in 8.0 and fixed in 8.0.2. I noticed that the project still had several instances of the Stereoid Bouncer plugin, so I replaced them with Channel Tools and the dropouts disappeared.

It's obvious that I can no longer recommend the Stereoid Bouncer plugin, and my apologies to anyone who might have taken my previous advice and used it.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I have never liked the stereoid bouncer myself - but I wasn't going to argue with you about it. I prefer the Pacific Soundcraft plugin. It's not exactly the same thing. If I remember correctly the stereoid bouncer uses delays to create a stereo field, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. The Pacific Soundcraft is simply a stereo widening tool and does an excellent job of it, IMO. you can adjust the volume and panning of each channel of a stereo track.

unfortunately, the last time I was on their website they had removed it from free distribution.

Actually, Stereoid Bouncer just has two sets of controls (EQ, distortion, level and pan), one set of controls for each side of a stereo track.

It's a great idea, being able to process left and right sides independently. I mostly just used the pan controls to position the track in the panorama, a true stereo pan rather than SONAR's balance control, which doesn't really pan the track but rather adjusts the relative volumes of the channels. That method works great for mono tracks, but not for stereo tracks.

I stand corrected (I was sure you'd clear me up on that!)

but the pacific soundcraft does exactly what you're describing for stereo tracks that sonar doesn't do. it's a great tool, IMO. I'm really glad I have it especially after they stopped distribution.
