Steven Slate Spam
I just recieved the following update offer again after the last one a week ago (!#?) for the fg-x: Thats 3 updates + another spam program ... within a month. While the 1st update addressed a CPU-strain issue, these others feel like spam. (IMHO!!!!!) Dear FG-X Customer, I've just uploaded another FG-X update to your ACCOUNT. The following changes have been made: 1.3.2 (4341) - New “Steven Slate” Preset Bank. - Added Leopard (10.5) Compatibility. To install, simply download the installer and it will install over the previous version. So let's chat about the new Steven Slate presets... When we first made the FG-X, everything was new about this processor. We didn't yet know its power, and how every control on the processor relates to the overall sonic result. Over the years I have learned a lot about the FG-X, and the presets I've made are how I have used it with extreme success. You'll notice that in my presets, I don't overdue the transient controls, dynamic perception, or push the ITP up. I find that if I want a transparent master that can peak at -8.5 RMS on the loudest passages without any distortion artifacts, keeping these controls at moderate levels works best. You'll also notice that on my presets, you will hear NO change until you increase the threshold on the compressor and gain knob on the FG-Level module. Without knowing how loud you want your masters, or how loud your mixes are originally, it's impossible to PRESET the gain and threshold. So once you pick my preset, start to move those parameters as you listen to the mix. That's all for now. Hit me up at slate@stevenslate.com to talk about music, and ask me any questions that are NOT TECH SUPPORT. Unfortunately, I have to ignore tech support requests since I am not the proper source to give you the support you'll need. But to send me music, to ask about general questions about the plugins that don't pertain to a bug or system issue, or to just say "hey".. you know where to find me. Cheers, Steven He states "over the years" (2 years? --- hahahahah!), "my presets", "send me music", and "a transparent master that can peak at -8.5 RMS", etc. ... like he's our best-friend-spammer. I begged the guy for a "any break" on the $250, "any break", I stated. He sympathized kindly with no response ... hahahaha! Any one else annoyed by his email marketing spam? Is he worth boycotting ... just yet? Sorry Slate, but could you limit your spam to a reasonable limit, like 1 per month max?

I don't see as that big of a deal (I get tons of marketing stuff from all sorts of companies I've done business with) - if you own a product and registered it, you provided your email so it's sort of a given you are going to receive marketing materials. If you don't like it simply add it to your spam filter or create a rule to mark it read and move it to a folder. Generally marketing will come from a separate email from updates, just figure out the difference and filter it in whatever email you are using. The second method allows you to see if things are marketing related or genuine updates to products you have purchased. Boycotting seems a bit extreme especially for products you use. If you don't use the products just add the email to your spam - simple solution.

I think you're overreacting. It's an update, he only sends emails when there' a fix, new version or a sale. (or the odd April fools one) Why would you be against that?

We may see many more (IMO a good thing). Recently Slate Digital beefed up their programming staff to address bugs. I was happy and will be happy to get updates to FG-X, VCC, Trigger and SSD 4.0.

I don't see any problem with getting update notifications or sales or any info that pertains to new products from companies but after watching his promo video the other day I was really put off by his, "car salesman" sales pitch and just what the hell is, "extreme success" when it's at home??? I'm very pleased not to own any of his his products for this reason alone. You might say, I'm a very happy "non" customer Steve

Hmmm. To a certain degree I do not judge products by their pitch man (ever been to NAMM?). Steven can be over the top, no question. Some might call it being passionate about his products. I pay little attention to him, really. I judge his products. I happen to like them. Does that make be a bad person?

I'll never understand why people have problems with the mannerisms of salesmen. I'm unsure what they want them to be like. Sure we all know there is marketing speak, overzealous hype, but if you know it up front what that it's going to be there, what difference does it make - he's in business to sell products and advertising is part of that. He has his gimmick, it's what he does, but marketing has never persuaded me that a great product is not a great product, and he does make some stellar products. Should I buy a crappy product from someone just because they are humble? As always individual mileage may vary.

Should I buy a crappy product from someone just because they are humble? As always individual mileage may vary. Of course he's a salesman and there are good ones and bad ones, in my opinion he falls in the latter category. Good ones are honest about there products and don't try to beguile you with sweet talk and just plain dishonest statements like, "the most powerful drum instrument on the planet" Boastful statements that are pure conjecture to the point of dishonesty are more than just mannerisms. What is his gimmick? I'm not trying to make a point about his product, only his sales technique. I happen to think that BFD2 is probably the best virtual drum kit on the planet but I wouldn't want fxpansion trying to tell me that and they don't which I am glad of. I hate most advertising because essentially it's a load of soapytitwank Steve Edit, Wow!! Didn't think soapytitwank would get past the moderators. My favourite swear word

Zo is fgx still crashing when closing the gui ? The only time I've had crashing problems is trying to save presets. Then the iLok issue with the first update; got that sorted. Today's update went through without a hitch; didn't try saving a preset though... The "Slate" presets; "fluff " really. This thing is really easy to dial in and get a track loud, fast! T

soapytitwank soapytitwank soapytitwank Thanks to you, Steven, I learned a new word today! I'll use that as a replacement for "suspicious", since it's soapytitwank on this forum. As for spam, I recommend setting up a separate inbox for music/audio/DAW related stuff. audioMIDI.com sends me one every single day! Into the special box they go. Maybe I look at them, maybe not.

Fine chiming here! Jon, Bapu, Bit, Zo, Lanley, Jin, Rain, Twaddle, Norrie, and even you, Carl! Carl's other thread on "the best" got me "over-reacting" SS wants to sodomize you and I! ... apparent on SS's "the best" video (as my 2 little daughters strolled in and upon SS's pink-clad lap-dancing-boy). "Hahahaha! You real funny, SS ... me want funny guy's product ... heeheehee!" Well, I must respect all your valid opinions concerning the Steven Slate Spam Weekly Upgrade Necessities: Perhaps about 50-60% of you are gleefully tolerant, 10% (like me) disgusted, and 40% 'indifferent'. I'm still curious why so many of you love the technical levels of the VCC, FG-X, SS Drums, etc. 3 products, IMHO: not worth my precious time on the earth. ... To each his own I guess. I formally apologize for once extolling the FG-X. Positive reviews are few on the web ... compared to PSP, Fab, and Elephant. 1-2 YouTubes reviewed the FG-X. What reputable ME employs the FG-X as their go-to limiter? Hahahahaha! "-8.5 dBs" RMS levels ... clouded my artistic judgements. (Edit: The above statement(s) may be a bit extreme since I use the limiter and am grateful for its ease of use for novice ME's like me) And, I wonder if any seriously consider SS's stuff any better than Sonar consoles, UAD console vsts, PSP warmers and limiters, and Toontrack's stuff. (To be fair, I haven't double-blind tested the VCC ... 'just lurked on VCC thread) On a positive note: SS indeed fixed the CPU-bug in the FG-X. Now my CPU doesn't crash on my lappy with this limiter.
