Steven Wilson

Hi,

Got to see him Thursday Night here in Portland, and it was nice.

It had more "energy" than a Porcupine Tree show, in that it was more rock and rock than it was trip and trip with some rock, but in the end, it was fairly good show and it had Mr. Killminster on guitar with Steven which makes it a nice treat and you know it will be strong all the way. Last saw him with Roger Waters.

Very nice playing on the Bass for that guy ... whoever he is ... Nicholas something ... no information anywhere about him ... the keyboards and the drums ... no huge thing for me, but they were fine. it was interesting to see a little attention being given to "solo" on the analog synthesizer, something that more than likely Richard Barbieri would not do.

A lot of nice music. Tribute to Prince with "Sigh of the Times". Slight tribute to David Bowie with "Lazarus".

Next? ARW ... on the 29th. It was a birthday present, although I was not totally into seeing another YES rehash!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Envious. Never got to see Porcupine Tree. Would love to see Steven Wilson - though I'm a huge fan of Barbieiri since his days with Japan. His minimalist style is what makes him so great imo.

I specially like the touches that Richard adds to the PT albums, and it is just as fine as Mr. Wright from PF. Very well defined and played touches.

Saw PT once, in 1999 in SF at the International Progressive Music Festival, a show that I was one of the official photographers for (some shots on my website), and I wish I had been able to get more pictures of PT, but Steven had made it clear that he wanted no pictures, and that made the producer upset, but I thought it best to let that one go.

It was a fabulous show, considering that when they arrived Sunday at noon, the Prophet 5 had taken a nasty spill at the airport, and they spread it out on the floor and some folks tried to fix it for 3 hours and failed, and in the meantime Richard went backstage and spent 3 hours programming 2 other synthesizers for the show. For my tastes, it was a fabulous show, with the exception that one roadie was going crazy that the band sounded bad. It sounded fantastic, and clean! It just showed how professional and how good these guys were.

SW on his own, for me, is an acquired taste, and he is fine and very good, however, not one of my favorites, but you know that there will be great folks with him, and it will be a very good show and well rehearsed and played.

So, yeah, it was a very good show, and Nick Beggs, was probably the best musician of all of them, though SW was also special in his own way.

AND, for once, in Portland, you could actually hear the keyboards!

Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco ... let's see ... with Lana Lane and the Rocket Scientists, Bondage Fruit, Buckethead, Brand X, Gong, Magma (their 1st American tour), Porcupine Tree and Per Lindh ... and a band at the front, with Gilly Smith, whose name fails me right now, playing Celtic instruments and such.

The night before I could not make it to see Djam Karet as I was too tired from the long drive.

I wish the West Coast was more friendly on these things. Sean Ahearn, probably took a big wash on the show, but it was at least 2/3'rs full, mostly for Magma and Porcupine Tree. On Sunday after the show, it was Gilly's birthday and the party was awesome, and Mr. Gomelsky was there and we all had a fun and quite a yapp and talk. He will be missed!

Nope ... all English. Read up on him on Wiki ... his band "made it", and only existed in his garage by himself! Talented guy for sure.

The only other bass player I have heard that fills in "detail" and "touch", is Dave Pegg, from Fairport Convention ... grab the live Richard Thompson versions of "Calvary Cross" and "Night Comes In", and it is just too pretty and well done all around, and he does NOT )to my knowledge) play a Chapman Stick. I'm not sure anyone can "teach that", and it is just a "feel" that is comfortable to that person. It seems like the Stick, makes those touches easier to work with. One other person that also has it some of that touch, and plays a Chapman Stick as well (that I have heard) is Don Schiff in LA and he was with The Rocket Scientists and has an incredible number of studio work as well.

Seen Peggy a few times, with FC and Tull. Top notch player. I loved his work with the late great John Martyn too, especially on Solid Air.

Talking of which, here's JM with another fine stick player, Jim Lampi.

No connection. The Porcupine Tree song "Lazarus" was released in 2005. Bowie's unrelated song ( as you know) was released just before his death in 2016. And ya I can't imagine anyone else doing it either.

I like their earlier stuff, however, "The Incident", which is 2 CD's could easily have made one excellent CD instead, for my ears. Other than that, I like "Deadwing", and the earlier stuff. "Signify" is also very nice.

Just to give you an idea of some of these guys, just wrap your head around the drummer, who happens to have been touring with King Crimson and the 3 drummer setup for the past couple of years! And Steven did the KC remixes!
