Still Driften (a slightly different take on it)

As Ed said, he enjoyed Gary's original version as did we all. And he wrote some words, but I was not feeling it. He did a re-write which I thought was really good? (and it is) In the course of laying it down, I tinkered a bit. I re-recorded his tracks much closer to what he wanted and hope he puts that edited version up. This is what I did based on his interpretation of Gary's wonderful tune.  Some of the words and phrasing is different, and overall melody and structure.

It builds a pretty strong Eagles vibe. I didn't do that intentionally? However, there are a major influence on my music. I am honored that they allowed me to participate and contribute.

Love the harmonies, main vocal melody much clearer. Much better, great job. Really great lyrics, if I didn't know any better I would say ED is a country boy.

This is very professional and cool.  I loved the Eagles, too.  It seems a bit long, but I don't know what's planned for this.  Way to go!

To me this sounds much more like Marty Robbins than the Eagles.   Very much Marty Robbins.

I like it.  The harmonies and lead vocal is really very nicely done.     Nice collaboration.  Great tune and melody and and excellect production on this.  Lynn may have a point, I would shorten the steel guitar break and add a little more busyness on the steel guitar break or perhaps do it as a bridge in different chords that resloves back to the verse or chorus.  Just a thought.

    Great job guys.

As I said in my Coffee House Collaborators "We Drift Apart" thread, this was not a competition and I respect Robby's desire to complete his vision/version of the song.

Thanks again Robby for all your patience and hard work. It is much appreciated.

I think it was Ed who said something like Robby could sing the phone book and make it sound good , so give the man two cracks at a a classy, well produced ballad and he's just gonna' shine.  I've heard both, and I really like both.  Good listening all the way.

Right on. I like this. Much prefer the vocal styling here (the other one was sterile IMO). The slide guitar set my teeth on edge much like fingernails on a blackboard, but slide guitars do that to me regardless of who is playing it. I do like the equal voicing between it and you though.

Have you heard the re-tracked vocals on the other from two days ago, yet?

And again, this is not a competition. I agree the first take on the other version was sterile as Robby was not quite into what I was wanting and I had to do serious edits to get it closer to my "vision". His re-tracked vocals are right on as well as being stellar here too.

I have not listened to the other new mix yet, no. Please make no mistake. I was not talking about Ed's production skills here. It is about Robby's flow as a vocalist.

Well, I listened to both back to back (flipped between them to hear certain parts) and, sadly, the mix is part of the problem on Eds song. However, there were a couple of moments on Eds song, when you fihished a phrase near the middle that had much more impact than the same moment in your mix. I will try to nail it down if you wish.

    Hi Robby,

Another awesome job on the lead and harmony vocals, arrangement, production, etc, etc...

I'm not gonna get dragged into a 'which version is better' argument because I'm pretty sure it's not a competition...I could be wrong, though

Please bear in mind that the two versions are NOT a competition.

It's been hard for me to get passed Gary's excellent song/production as It's engrained in my brain.

All these attempts to add words and altered melodies seems to fall short to me.

But Robbaaay, You did sing the **** out of this here.. Great vocs...

It is not about competition. It is about arriving at the best possible song, and I believe that can be accomplished with a little give and take. Each track has its merits and each track has its weaknesses. But I think if you can find the middle ground, you will have a song that will be memorable (and saleable - yes I am a capitalist... sue me ).
