Still not a lava lamp in sight... But I think I'm done.
Well, I actually I have one but it's tucked away in a closet somewhere. I guess I'd have to find another one, identical, because my brain seems to require a certain kind of symmetry for most things. At any rate, I prefer candles. Plus, they smell so good. I'm thinking of finding an incense burner to alternate scents a bit. But I think that, besides some additional sound treatment and, later on, replacing the carpet with a hardwood floor and maybe a fine turkish type of rug, I'm done setting the mood and creating an inspiring environment - for me anyway. For a while recently I toyed with the idea of painting everything black. But black paint has a way to make things look cheap-ish if you're not careful with it... Besides the Marshall stack which I've planned on getting for live gigs, the only thing missing is an acoustic and/or a nylon string guitar (I've been meaning to get back to classical guitar for a while now). I mean, I could get better monitors, but the Mackies are okay, and for my purpose (writing and demoing) more than sufficient. The white Les Paul studio seems to be THE guitar I've been dreaming of for years, and and with coil-splitting, it's actually very versatile. The Epiphone Thunderbird is everything I want in a bass. So that settles that. And, even though there are far better and more expensive solutions for DI recording, the POD HD300 is more than enough for me. So I seem to have reached a point where I don't envy other people's setup, and all the fancy gear. My own minimalist setup is very representative of me and how I work. It's MINE. The only thing I envy from other studios I visit is acoustics. And I'll work on improving just that in here, though I have no illusion that the potential of this room is fairly limited. But that's just that. As it is, my wife is scheduled for hip surgery at the end of the month, and we'll be working on new music together in here for the next few months, while she recuperates. We have a producer really pushing for us to release some material, which is nice. Obviously, once we're ready, we have access to a proper studio with nice recording rooms, for drums and guitars and all. And we also have a couple of band projects, which should keep us busy enough. I've always been an addict of those studio pics threads, so, you guys feel free to throw in a couple of pics of your workspace - I always feel it reveals some aspects of people which you might not know otherwise, and it's just a nice excuse to drool over gear and stuff. :P

Well, that's some pretty awesome gear! As for the glass... LOL It's Sainte Croix, a cheap wine I buy at Trader Joe's. But I like it. Back in Quebec, I used to buy this exact same wine for $12 a bottle. Plus taxes, so around $14 a bottle. Here, I get it for $4.99, so it's not even a luxury. The studio doubles up as a study for me after 11 pm - that's when I grab a few books, a glass of wine, a couple of crackers and spend a couple of hours reading and listening to music. It's a very fine environment for that too, I must say.

Thanks No monitors though... Just not practical at the moment... Rain It's a very fine environment for that too, I must say.

It does indeed look very "cultured," if you know what I mean I've just had to google "The Classic Midrash," so I am now a little bit wiser than before

You should read some John Owen. Good stuff but a slow read. You have a nice looking set up there. One thing... before you get the Marshall Stack do yourself a favor and check out the Mesa Boogie Mark V 25 watt head with a 2x12 cab. You can get almost any classic rock or clean sound out of it and it's a DEAL. You probably wont even need any pedals with it, though a Rangemaster or a good compressor pedal might be useful. I had not idea about the Mark series until I got one. You MUST read the manual though because every channel is WAY different. Some you have to keep the bass below 9:00, others you can push it up but once you get used to it, it is awesome... Then again a Germino or a Marshall is nice too. I hear lots of good things about the JVM heads from people who play live. I like what I've heard of the V/M too. Good luck. I hope you get exactly what you're wanting. Nice studio... I agree about the wood floor. I have carpet and once set up, I'll probably pull it all out and put in a wood floor too. Julien

The thing is, with almost every Marshall I've played, I was able to get my tone almost instantly. It's more a case of what it doesn't do than all it can do. It puts me in that specific ballpark by default. I'll not be able to buy my dream amp - which is a certain JCM 800 that belongs to a friend of ours. That amp is my absolute favorite amp I've ever had the pleasure to play. It is IT. But I know from experience that even a Marshall DSL will work for me. I'm not overly anal about sound - I do have friends who like to make a fuss about fretboard wood and every little detail. Me I'm happy with "a" Les Paul and "a" Marshall.

The Marshall through a matching 4x12 cab is a classic combination. Although I prefer an open back 2x12, there's something about the 4x12 that gives you a gut punch it's hard to find elsewhere. I owned 2 vintage 100 watt superlead's that I had to keep in check most of the time. When I did get them out to a location where they could be turned up it was really something. I would just freak out. Sort of like releasing the flying monkey's. Fly! rage, be free! There are certain tones that can only be realized with massive power and volume.

Yup - they look awesome, don't they? But I'll opt for the standard DSL line, head + 4x12. No matter if I'm playing Norwegian Death Metal from Hell or classic 80's hard rock or one of those KISS gigs, aesthetically, this one work with just about everything. Like a black shirt, really.

Got them from Home Goods a few months ago. They immediately caught my eye, but my instinctive reflex in those case is to think - nah, I don't really NEED those, I can get a couple of cheap ones. Worst case, I'll think about it. Which isn't indicated when you're shopping at Home Goods because they seem to have a very limited quantity of certain items and you just never see them again. So my wife insisted and I took the two they had. Never saw any of them there after that.

Hey Rain. Don't overlook the JCM 900s. They are good amps. I think especially the SL-X, it is all tube, no clipping diodes. Even a tube rectifier. If you get too much gain have the power tubes biased a little colder. Here are a couple of clips: High Gain and in the first clip clean at about 1:12 The second starts clean. The SL-X seems to do anything and they are a steal right now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCXP7oZenjk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ9U-MIbwwU There are lots more vids. Check the ones by Johan Segeborn a comparison of three 900s here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnKsYgMoz1g IDK... I've wanted one for a while.. a long while. I should get one while they are under priced. On the DR, you and jumper the FX loop then adjust the level for better tone. Interesting amps and a steal. Tey got a bad rap, undeserved I think. I hope you get an amp you really love. J

Oh, I wouldn't mind a 900. :) But I don't have the patience/the years ahead of me - the minute I have the green light, I'll just log into Sweetwater's web site and move the DSL half stack from my wish list to my basket and check out, using a payment plan or credit if need be (though I don't think I'll need to this time). That's basically what I did for my white Les Paul studio - looked for something simple which wasn't plagued by all the junk Gibson put on their guitars in 2015, found this deal on the Studio at AMS, placed the order and I'm as happy as could be. I had friends suggesting that I try and find a GOOD used Les Paul, one that dated from before X or Y depending on who I spoke with., and one with these or those pick-ups and these or those tuners. But I find that I'm 100% fine with this one. I found MY guitar. Heck, even the stuff which I used to feel calls for a strat I'm comfortable playing on this baby. Here's a little improvisation/jam (couldn't help myself when I hit upon a combination of wah + univibe + octave fuzz on the POD HD... I mean, it calls for it. :) ) Low quality audio, directly from the MacBook cam.

I'm glad I am not alone, lol. You do have more years than I do (I hope) I was telling my wife this morning I don't want to come to the end and never have had a Marshall head. I have a JTM60 combo, it's OK but it isn't the same. I've always heard good things about the DSL series, all of them. When I used to go sit in the store and check out everything I could I really liked the DSL15 combo, to me it sounded a little better than the DSL40 but at volume... with a pedal, who knows. I may get an SL-X if I find a good deal on one. I don't need one but I didn't need a 4WD truck back in the 90s either, when I got that out of my system. Too many amps too little time. I'd like a 45/100, a SLPHW, a 1987x, a bluesbreaker, a VOX AC30... I do not believe one can have too many amps. I have two strats, down to one LP, three acoustics, a Suhr LE, Epiphone Sheraton II, Gibson SG (thank you), a couple SX Chinese guitars, an Alamo Fiesta, maybe more.... that is more than enough guitars but there will ALWAYS be another amp I'll want. I know that. I love amps! I hope you get it soon! J PS... DANG, I forgot. I used to have a JMP50 head. So much for that argument, lol. I won't remind her.

I went to get it out 5 months later, and found that they changed their policy from holding it for 6 months to 4 months. It was gone. Somebody got a steal... The best amp head I've ever owned. I still feel a little sick to my stomach when I think about it.

Leadfoot I had a 1985 JCM800 head that I bought from a friend in 1987. I got hard up for money in the late 90's, so I pawned it "temporarily" for $150. I went to get it out 5 months later, and found that they changed their policy from holding it for 6 months to 4 months. It was gone. Somebody got a steal... The best amp head I've ever owned. I still feel a little sick to my stomach when I think about it.
Wow, I would too!
I liked my '79 JMP then had Mike Soldano mod it and loved it even more!
I played through one of those for the first time recently - turns out that my best buddy here in Vegas had one in storage and took it out for the big KISS Night. Amazing. But, for whatever reason, that JCM 800 above just seems to be an even better fit.

I really miss it, but here's the back story if you will. When I was trying everything Line 6 (I did some beta testing for them too), I just loved the so-called JCM 800 tone they had on the Pod Pro. I certainly wasn't able to get the same from a JCM 800 which always seemed a bit thin. Turns out, they actually modeled a Soldano-modded JMP for that preset so I said "What the hell, why don't I find me the 'real' thing!" I ended up having to get the head separately then have Mike mod it, but it was definitely worth it! Plus it sounded MUCH better at lower volumes for practicing in an apartment - lol!
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!
