I started this doc b/c I'm curious which guitar fx are popular with owners.

I want to grow my collection and hope to learn from what others use.

Feel free to add to the spreadsheet in the link above or just reply to the post.

I've had a billion of them and sold most when I got a Fractal Axe FX II.

The ones I kept include (but not limited to):

Skreddy Top Fuel
TC Electronics Stereo Chorus/Flanger
1st Edition Small Stone Phaser
Old Memory Man (replaced the chips to reduce noise)
Echoplex EP 3 (not a pedal, but AWESOME)

The one pedal I sold that I might get again:

4 knob Tube Driver

It's a fun rabbit hole to go down! :) My new rabbit hole is rack gear...

My favorite pedals that are long gone were:
Westbury "The Tube" overdrive. Had a 12AX7 in it. Killer sound...
Ross Flanger from the late 70s. I've never been able to replicate the sweet sound of that flanger.
I was young and dumb when I got rid of those two stomps. Wish I had them back.
One thing I DO still have is my Roger Mayer Rocket FX Octavia. Just like the one Jimi used. Nothing else sounds quite like it.

Re: Stomp boxes anyone? 2018/11/15 18:04:48 (permalink)
I saw this last night and made me think a bit. Since multi-FX boards came out, I haven't thought of stomp boxes per se, so the only two that came to mind were:

Wah Pedal - no Multi-FX boards I have ever owned can do this simple feature properly - Dunlop Cry Baby
Talkbox - Another feature Multi-FX boards don't often have - I actually made one based on this "Dual duty Talkbox" video. I happened to walk past crappy megaphones on clearance last Christmas, snagged one on impulse for the horn driver, but didn't built the amp up till 4 months later.

Neither of the above are "regular use" items, but I can see folks who gig regularly having a real pedal board setup. I am much more ITB these days just for simplicity sake.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Favorite's so far are

RYRA Clone
Belle Epoch Delay with preamp
Obscura Altered Delay
Love sqeeze Compressor
Earthquake Hoof Fuzz

As far as distortion and overdrive pedals I have around seven of them but none are a favorite. I haven't found that one great distortion/overdrive yet so last night I bought the original Tube Driver 911 with the bias upgrade made by BK Butler hoping that this one will do it for me.

I quit using "stomp boxes" when I got a Line 6 POD X3.  I use the POD X3 for effects only, no amp modeling. I have my main "digital delay" and "Spring Reverb".  I have others for Chorus, Leslie Sim, Phase Shifter, Tremolo and Fuzz.

Similar thing here. Got really sick of patch cables, batteries, the time & hassle taken to switch between sounds etc.

I first moved on to an Alesis Quadraverb GT with a midimate pedal board, then a Roland GP16 / FC100 II, then finally a Roland VG88 which is what I use now for the most part.

When recording, I record 3 tracks: the stereo effected output from the VG88, plus the mono dry guitar output.

This gives me the options of going with my original guitar sound, starting again from scratch using by putting the dry signal through plugins and/or external inserts, or a combination of both.

Re: Stomp boxes anyone? 2018/12/02 23:30:14 (permalink)
I'm mostly acoustic these days, but even when I play electric I don't use effects much. I have a beefed up old Laney VC-30 from the late 90's when they still made them right. I've got a great tech out in Staunton, IL who gave the overdrive channel a Twin Reverb tone stack and changed some coupling caps among other things to get a Fendery sound and gave the master volume more overdrive by changing some resister(s). Sounds like a 30-watt Twin now with great overdrive that cleans up real good by backing of the volume on the guitar like it should. It has decent spring reverb. I put linear pots in my guitar so I can do quick staccato volume swells and a good wah-wah sound with the tone control. I also take the dampening grease out of my pots so the knobs turn easier and flip the control plate around for easy access to the knobs. Aside from reverb and overdrive, I don't like effects with a Tele. I still have an eBow but don't really use it much anymore. I also have a Boomerang looper but mainly use that with my acoustic rig.

I have a video on setting your guitar up for volume swells / tone wahs if anyone is interested:

Re: Stomp boxes anyone? 2018/12/03 12:43:42 (permalink)
After I built a diyre reamp box, i started adding th3 stomp boxes to my chain to my real amplifier. I have an fcb1010 pedal board. This means I can try pretty much any pedal I want. Because I only have 1 reamp box, I only have 1 insert point in my pedal chain, but it doesn't have to go first. Honestly, I do tend to put it first. This means i can put the fx from the computer before one thing and after another if I want.

I like using the smallest hint of expander with a little parallel compression too, when playing clean. I use my hardware compressor and my rme expander.

I could probably figure out how to turn the compression on and off with the fcb1010, but I haven't done that yet.

It is interesting to hear the difference between my real screamer and the th3 equivalent. Lots of learning without spending any money.

Now here is where there is a leak in the financial boat. Earthquaker. I've picked up three this year. Hummingbird, sea machine and transmisser. I mess with them for hours.

Of the FX in TH3, the Vanilla soft drive and the Mercury box are my favorites by a lot.

Other than those and a gate, I basically don't need anything in TH3.

I now have a Blackstar Amp and I bought the foot controller but I keep returning to my stomp boxes because ,,,?? Well first they are dead simple to set on the fly between songs and even while playing. I KNOW what will happen when I turn any of the few knobs down there...
Second I think I like the tone overall.

The current stomp box's on my pedal board .

MXR Dyna Comp , Vox Wah , Boss SD-1 , MXR 78 Baddass Distortion, Electro Harmonix Nano Muff,TC Flashback Delay , Electro Harmonix Nano Memory Toy , Boss Phase Shifter ,  Sabine tuner and a undisclosed bootique boost pedal that I got used ...

Then I have a few loose pedals and a couple of older multi effects units collecting dust ...

in my case , the truth is most of the time I play clean or use some mild amp distortion ...

I love amps ..those are what I would collect if I had the money and the space ..right now I have 7

Re: Stomp boxes anyone? Well - here are a few... 2018/12/15 14:09:34 (permalink)
Hello

I tried to fill in your sheet, but I only am familiar with a couple of the pedals there.
But maybe this will help:

I had and used and loved my Roland RC20XL looper - I still have it - but I just bought it's modern equivalent, the Roland Boss RC-30 to replace it in a new pedal set up I am building.  So far (after just a few days use) I am liking the RC-30 just fine - it has several advantages over the 20XL - like some nice effects including a sort of 1/2 speed drop sound, and so on - the ONLY thing I am really missing, is the REVERSE function - it's gone, and so is the jack for it - so no more reverse.  But - I can just add reverse into any loop by putting reverse delay into the rest of that patch - so it's not a deal breaker - but I DO miss it - it was really nice to have a FOOTSWITCHABLE reverse button - i used it ALL the time.

A note about the RC-30 - if you have an FS-6 footswitch - it will actually perform FOUR functions for you - which is amazing given that it only has TWO switches:

1) LEFT button - LONG PRESS - de increment preset down by one
2) LEFT button - SHORT PRESS - switch chosen effect OFF or ON

3) RIGHT button - LONG PRESS - up increment preset by one
4) RIGHT button - short press - switch between LOOP1 and LOOP2

That's good value and it gives you total flexibility in a pretty small package - one RC-30 + one FS-6 footswitch.

IF you don't care about COMPACT - then just get an RC-300 - it's all built right into that one - and it has THREE loops plus effects - but, it's BIG.  I used it extensively and have no complaints - maybe the ULTIMATE in Roland loopers - worth having, I think.

________________

Next - your DD-6

I never owned the 6, I think I stopped at 2 or 3 but I am not sure (I think I still have a 3) - I stopped buying single stomp delays quite some years ago - because larger delay stomps can give you so much more functionality.

I like the old Digitech Time Bender - it's an awesome stomp delay - but there are SO many brilliant delay pedals out there...

In a modern version - the Earthquaker Avalanche Run Reverb / Delay is pretty awesome especially if you get the expression pedal

Two VERY different delay "experiences" there (Time Bender vs Avalanche Run).

However - I am using exactly NONE of those delay pedals in my live set up now - I am relying on preset delays in one of two more complex devices - the HELIX LT or the EVENTIDE H9 - I have one of each, and the Digital Delay sounds I can get out of those two boxes is really all you will ever want for live.

My entire new pedalboard will be three things only:

1) A very extensively programmed Helix LT with hundreds of rhythm and SOLO level presets pre-created and saved - with the ability to load the "best" 127 sounds in in seconds

2) An Eventide H9 inserted into the Helix's effects loop, with 99 of my hand-selected very, very favourite and good sounding algorithms - and controlled BY the Helix's external MIDI functions - so each time I select a HELIX preset - the HELIX selects and sets the EVENTIDE to my desired EVENTIDE sound - which I can program in or out in different "snapshots" of each HELIX preset

3) The Boss RC-30 with FS-6 footswitch - yes, the Helix has a looper built in, but I wasn't sure I could reliably use it while playing live in the same way as a pedal looper - and this way, I can change the entire Helix patch while capturing loops from the entire pedal set up - so I could record a loop at lower rhythm volume with certain effects - then, switch to a LOUDER Helix "solo" preset with a completely different set of effects with which to "solo" over the running loop - or, add completely different sounding inputs into a running loop by switching between HELIX+EVENTIDE sounds...this is a pretty limitless set up.

So for me - single stomp delays fell by the wayside long, long ago - but if you are gonna have one - there is probably NONE better than the Boss - I had an original DD-1 when it came out - which boasted an amazing ONE SECOND of delay at the time!!
Great boxes, those.

I have never owned an 808 OD pedal - but it's my understanding that really - there is not a lot out there that is BETTER.  I'd stick with that - unless you WANT something else - in which case, you can get a HUGE array of different OD choices (not to mention, fuzz, od, or distortion) - and that's best left to your ear - maybe Earthquaker has something you might like, or Electro Harmonix or even good old Boss - personally, I think that MOST ALL Boss single stomps, sound pretty darn good for the money - they are usually better quality, and better sounding - than many of their competitors old or new - they are just GOOD pedals.  I have about seven or eight of them still, and a number of them are living on my home/for fun pedalboard.

I bought the Roland GR-55 synth but really no idea how it compares to the GR-20 - but I would say this about my GR-55 - it's a "Closed System" so you are stuck with what it can do - and that is it.  Having said that - it contains some great sounds - and some, not so great.  The ten sounds that are amazing - are AMAZING.  I love it.  But I don't find it to be that great for it's regular "guitar sounds" and the synths sounds are hit or miss depending.  I find myself using it less and less.  But it may be a good alternative to the 20 if you are thinking of retiring the 20 - you should at least listen to the 55 and see if you are interested in what it can do - a bit pricey, but I like it.

The rest - I don't know - but I wish you luck - I love stomp boxes, and I wish I had a LOT more of them.  I have lots and lots of them on wish lists here and there, but if I live to be 100 I will never have time to buy and try as many as I WISH I could.  If I won the lottery...I would have HUNDREDS of stomp boxes, I really would.  One for everyday of the year, at least.

Good luck and enjoy - you have good kit there - make use of it - play!

Best regards

Dave :-)
