'Stoney Ground'

A rare 'solo' track from me This is a new version of a tune I wrote a few years back, always wanted to take another shot at it.

James, I really like this. Your phrasing at times suggests an odd time signature. Pretty good synth part too. Nice guitar work, as usual, and a great tone. I like the way the song builds, and, if I had to criticize it, it would be because you end it just as you really seem to be reaching the peak, casually tossing in some terrific licks as you fade. Jeff Baxter used to do that a lot too. Good work.

I definitely get a Scottish vibe off of this. It's sort of Rush meets William Wallace.

And then they both meet Greg Allman?

James, this is great. Really nice work went into this. Very enjoyable to listen to! Great synth part - or is it electric violin or both? ( Probably synth and guitar but it is really cool )  Loved this one !!! Worthy of at least a couple more listens for sure! Great stuff!

Hi James. I've been busy latley but I'm glad I popped in to hear this little gem. Intro and instrumentation introduction is fantastic. The rythym is established nicely and the guitar tone is great. The synth solo at 1:45 is a classic example of a simple melody that allows the effect to take it's full course without being rushed. Fits perfect. The rythym guitar has shades of Eric Johnson at times like around 2:19 and also sounds great. It's a cool guitar tune that all gels and ever so slightly hints at prog at times. A little Tony Bankish here and there. Great Playing. Enjoyed this a lot.

    Hi James, I like this
the way the lead guitar floats over the top is something I enjoy in your playing
nice synth parts , dig the tone  of your clean guitars ...
could be me , but i did notice a couple of the drum accents didnt hit exactly
w the chord accents  in the first half of tune
intentional ? or SC monkey wrench ?

good one , I like your style on this ..keep em coming

Thanks Mark, that's really kind. Well, if you could hear the clunker that came right after the fade, you'd understand why I ended it there The intro is kind of odd - I think it might be in 10/8, not sure.

Hi Robby, thanks. Yes, I suppose being an Englishman with a Welsh name, living in Scotland, the celtic influence has to creep in . Talking of creep, thanks for the Mel Gibson pic..

Hey James, thanks a lot, really glad you enjoyed it. I like those analog-y synth tones, always liked Billy Currie's pitch-bend solos with Ultravox.

well done, solid mix and fantastic instrumentation. Love all the guitar riffs and the bass really lays it down. The synth was a nice touch also. Just realised you were the guy that gave me the "dawn chorus" wav clip a few years back, thanks again, I didnt realise from the forum name!

    James,

I love the tones your getting here.  The dynamic between guitars and their themes is nicely balanced.
There's a give and take kind of dance moving throughout.

    Mix sounds just fine.

Thanks Vicente, always nice to get a compliment from yourself.

Hey Rhyno, thanks very much indeed. I've had that Eric Johnson thing said before, and I must get around to listening to him one day! very happy with the Tony Banks comparison, he's the master of the beautiful turnaround phrase, I'm always searching for those 'bits'.

Hi Kenny, glad you enjoyed this little outing, thanks a lot my friend. You would most likely be correct about the drum hits...just because I enjoy myself playing air drums on the van steering wheel, doesn't mean I can program them properly..

    Hi James,

Great sounding track! Great guitar tone and playing.

Nice "odd" time signature at the beginning and really cool playing on the outro.

+1 to the Tony Banks reference.

This sounds like a Tangerine Dream tune.

Really nice vibe, mix is great as usual.  Some nice chord changes there.    Excellent playing as always.  This rides the edget between rock and ambient.  I always like that effect.

    Well done, good tune.

Nice job! As someone mentioned I was sorry to hear the fade at the end because based on what I heard at around 1:15 I was pretty sure you had the chops to destroy (in a good way ;) ) the improvisation. Nice stuff

Excellent!  I love the different guitar tones you are getting.  I like that slight delay  on the clean "strat" sounding rhythm parts.  The lead tones are awesome.  The synth lines (with portamento turned on) and the odd time signiture reminded me a little of ELP.

The verse and lead guitar lines reminded me of Daryl Steurmer.

Very nice all the way around.
