Well, if everyone would just stay alive, we wouldn't need any goodbye threads! (BTW - Abe Vigoda, aka "Fish" on the Barney Miller Show, just passed away...)

FWIW, I've been thinking the same thing. It has made me much too aware of my age, how quickly I went from feeling strong and young to well, you know the rest... and in that short amount of time again, without the inevitable, I will be really old. I should think more like my dad did. He was ALWAY feeling GREAT! No matter what, "I'm GREAT". I'm going to get off the "woe is me, I'm getting old". It's depressing. I'm GREAT! (but I agree, not so many obits, at least until Keef actually dies.) J

"Behind every man now alive stand 30 ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living." - Arthur C. Clarke (2001: A Space Odyssey) Of course that was in 1968, when there were fewer people on the Earth. It's probably more like 15 dead per living person now, or about 107 billion 'ghosts'.

Hi, A bit strange, but I fit into the surrealist area when it comes to these things ... have a drink ... go party! Celebrate ... the wonderful things that you learned from that person and anything else ... but sitting back and crying is not gonna help. Some folks will be missed, but then you and I don't sit here and say we miss Mozart, Beethoven or Bach ... so end of story!

Yes and no. People are rarely missed for more than a few days except by one or two people and when those one or two people die, they are forgotten, they become what they did. If you aren't Bach or Mozart or John Wayne... you are completely forgotten rather quickly. Most of us don't have any notion of who our great great grand parents were, we may know their name and a story or two but that's about it.. a generation or two farther back and we have to research to even know their name. Life, in this world, is for the living. Death is always weird to me. People tell me it is natural but to me, it never seems natural, it always seems wrong when someone close to me dies. It seems unnatural, at least to me. Still, I move on I don't forget the dead I knew but life goes on without them, if you know what I mean. One day we are vital and a part of everything and everyone, for better or worse. Then one day we are not and everything and everyone moves on and they don't miss us, except for immediate family or a close friend. I am well aware that I like a great many more people than those who like me but it is what it is. DUST: Fleetwood Mac (Danny Kirwan) When the white flame in us is gone And we that lost the world's delight Stiffen in darkness. Left alone To crumble in our separate night When your swift hair is quiet in death And through the lips corruption thrust to still the labor of my breath When we are dust, when we are dust When we are dust, when we are dust When your swift hair is quiet in death And through the lips corruption thrust to still the labor of my breath When we are dust, when we are dust When we are dust, when we are dust When the white flame in us is gone And we that lost the world's delight Stiffen in darkness Left alone To crumble in our separate night When your swift hair is quiet in death And through the lips corruption thrust to still the labor of my breath When we are dust, when we are dust When we are dust, when we are dust

Of course we don't, because they didn't exist in our lifetimes. Just to pick a few at random, I miss Iain Banks, Terry Pratchett and Freddie Mercury. Likewise John Martyn, Stuart Adamson and Gary Moore. I miss Christopher Hitchens, even though I only became aware of him a short while before he died. It seems a shame that such people have gone too soon, and will have no further part to play in what's going on.

As if we haven't had enough "real" deaths this month, there apparently is a social media hoax today that Joe Cocker and Leslie Nielsen have just died as well. Um, no. They've both been dead for a while now (heck, Joe died on my birthday in 2014, Leslie sometime in 2010). Sheesh!

1) I agree with, ampy... too many obits flooding the CH lately. It's gettin' gloomy. 2) Since Abe Vigoda (the immortal) supposedly passed the other day I'm thinking the planet got nuked by aliens and we are all actually in some twisted afterlife mirroring the exact shizhole we were living in previously... except without Abe Vigoda. 3) Lemmy is watching over us all. Do not anger the Lemmy.

I'm not attached to people that much. Sure I miss Daevid Allen, one of the greatest and best people I ever met, both funny, literary, intelligent and a great artist, singer and writer ... but ... for me, he is more important as a person that taught me about myself, than anything else ... he showed me one of the ways to path ... and I can not ask for more than anyone/anything else. To me, the inspiration is inside, and forever alive ... it will never die. Their body's will ... and as Daevid says ... in one song ... "you can kill my body, but you can't kill meeeeeeeeee .... " ... and I think that you have to relate to that ... for me, it's the soul of the person that matters, not anything else. Their work is the bonus gift to you and I. NP: Garry Moore - Spirit (to the end of the album) from his first solo. AND, very loud. The best guitar solo ever.
Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I don't believe in a 'soul'. All the people I mentioned still had much, much more to offer. They're gone too soon, that's why I miss them. They all inspired me, and I would rather they were still alive, simple as that.
