Strange Driver issue for Roland Studio-Captures

Hi, guys and gals! I have a quick question. Yesterday I had an issue with SPLAT and my 2 Studio-Captures. I tried inserting an older plugin and when SPLAT crashed it killed the drivers for the SCs. All other audio programs still recognize and play sound thru them but SPLAT was dead in the water! I tried turning them off and there was a tip on-line to just unplug them from the USB ports for a moment then plug them back in and SPLAT should recognize them again. I tried to no avail to get them back so I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall the drivers thru Windows Update.
Everything is running fine now but I have two questions.
1-How do I get SPLAT to recognize the SCs if the drivers are still working in other programs?
2-How do I get a copy of the Windows 10 drivers for the SCs so if I happen to be somewhere that I don't have internet access I can still reinstall the drivers from my hard drive?
The only available drivers I see on the Roland website is for Windows 8! I don't want to have to keep jumping online to install my drivers again if SPLAT crashes this hard.
Any advice would be welcome!

Thanks, King, but that is only PDF files about the driver. The actual driver is not in the download. If you read the RED sentence at the top of the page it explains that the driver is only available as a Windows Update file download that gets automatically installed. I just don't want to have to get online everytime I lose my driver.

Sorry. I saw the download and thought the download was an alternate method og getting the drivers. I downloaded the same file a few month ago thinking I had a backup copy of the drivers. I just unzipped it and sure enough it is just a pdf file. I never really checked the file size. There must be some way to get a copy of drivers.

I have scoured the internet and had no luck. It seems odd that Roland would make that driver proprietary of Microsoft Windows 10! I guess I will contact Microsoft or Roland to see if they can send me the file so I can keep a backup on my drive. Anyone else have an idea?

Let us know if you have any luck getting the drivers.  I had the same question.  Kind of crazy that the driver is only available through Windows Update.   Not surprising though, since Roland has cleared out much of their staff in the past couple years.

Stuff available from Windows Update can usually be found here:
    https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx

The trick is to find it. Check the FAQ and help.
A search for Roland Studio-capture gets 4 hits for Win10.

Searched and did not find ANYTHING that resembled a downloadable driver. All info says you have to get it thru the Windows Update. That is rather tedious when you have to uninstall, clean the registry, get online (what happens if you aren't anywhere close to the internet connection?), let Windows Update download and install, then re-setup the driver, etc., etc.,!
I did find that restore would rollback and the studio-captures came back online but that means having to create a restore point everytime you work! God, help us!
I still don't have an answer on why the other audio programs still function and SPLAT does not recognize them until you restore or reinstall from scratch! There has to be an answer to this somewhere.

Are you sure that you need to reinstall the drivers? When my Roland Duo-Capture EX locks up in the way that you describe, I have also found that unplugging/re-plugging achieves nothing. Rebooting the PC restores normal service. Or a quicker way (perhaps only relevant to DC EX, which has a hardware sample-rate switch) is to power it off, flip the rate, power it on, power it down, flip the rate back again, power up. HTH

    Hi there
got a studio capture and tried yesterday for the first time, the problem is that i don't want automatic updates and drivers turned on, I usually turn everything off after instaling windows or sometimes do the first updates and then if computer is running ok turn everything off.
so i had to turn on the updates for a few minutes, went to device manager and there it was the studio capture with exclamation icon, right click on that and update driver (choose find automatic...), and everything went good.
but as I said before don't want automatic updates from windows and like you I want that driver too. Why Roland is hiding the driver from us??

another thing is, I had a zoom r24 as an audio interface and was great too, when I was using as a standalone recorder the sound was not so good, but as an audio interface it was great.
so yesterday i was trying the studio capture and while not connected to the computer the sound was not so good, when i listen through phones and comparing connecting directly to my keyboard the sound is nothing close, but using as an audio interface when i start Reason daw, the sound is great too, why this big difference?? it's a limitation to not use as standalone mixer?
    thank you and cheers :)

Christopher, I have tried rebooting. Even unplugging the computer and rebooting and the SCs still don't come back up in Sonar! They work on everything else but Sonar. I have tried the unplugging the SCs from the USB ports trick but still nothing works but reinstalling from scratch.
I plan to contact microsoft and roland today about acquiring the download from them and backing it up on my drive. It just makes no sense to sell an interface and not provide a way to have a backup of the updated driver for it.
Proenza, the interfaces are designed to be used exclusively for hooking to the computer. They are not designed to be used as mixers. Although, it would be nice if they served a dual function like that. Maybe, drop that suggestion in someones email. Pretty good idea!

I think I will ask for drivers too, if we all do the same it will be easier.
but i saw somewhere that this can work as a "standalone something", don't remeber and can't find it.
but even plugged into my computer the sound work i can listen sound on youtube and whatever I want through the interface but the sound just shines when I create an audio track in whatever daw, why the sound is not so good before I launch the music software? am I doing something wrong?

Roland has went to "plug and play" drivers for Win 10 on the equipment they are supporting for Win 10.

But, you can hack the Win 8 drivers and use that.  I originally did that for my Studio Capture when Windows 10 first came out, as it took a week or two for Roland to come up with the plug and play drivers.

There is a thread in the Computer section about how to hack the driver.  I had to hack the Win 8 driver to install my Edirol PCR 500 keyboard as those have been discontinued and Roland is not providing new drivers.

Fireberd, are you talking about the .inf hack? I forgot how to locate the .inf file! I actually printed out the process from the thread you speak of but I became leary about doing that when someone else posted that they tried that hack and it did not work!
I will take another read and see if I want to tackle that. If you remember we bumped in to each other in that thread. Please, keep an eye out here in case I need help.  I have the windows 8 driver installer backed up on my secondary drive.
Do I hack the driver before the install or after? And please explain where the .inf is located! Thanks!

slartabartfast, I don't have Internet Explorer anymore. !0 changed that to Microsoft Edge! Any way, I am looking for the Studio-Capture driver, not the Duo.
I did the hack once I found the correct place to hack. The old thread keeps talking about a .INF file. That file name is now System Information file! Once I opened it there was no problem doing the hack! I did print out the tip on how to able and disable the signature before installing.
I have no idea if it works. Everything is running so good now I will wait until, God forbid, I lose my drivers again. I hope it is a long time before I have to find out but I am really curious now!

BTW, for anyone else interested the hack is described in the Computer section of this forum. The top of page 3. Posted by Blades! I printed out these instructions and followed them to the T so I hope this works for all of us. Fireberd, also has a tip farther down that page I believe on how to dis-able driver signing so the hacked driver will install. All very simple instructions. Thanks, guys.
I will try this fix the next time it happens and I will be sure to let you know how it goes.

Roland does not make it easy........I use the Chrome Browser, so I can't access that Microsoft page.  I'm on Windows 10, which has Microsoft's new Edge browser installed, and even it won't access the page.  So to open that page, I have to install Microsoft IE.   Crazy.

AND THE WINNER IS SLARTABARTFAST!!!!! You, my man, RULE! LOL!
I had no idea that Internet Explorer was hiding in Windows 10! I followed your instructions. I had to let it install the Windows Update Catalog and after doing so, up popped on the screen the drivers I have been chasing ever since 10 was installed!
Many thanks to you and I hope that someday I can repay the favor. This needs to be a sticky at the head of the forum. I know that many of us will benefit from this fix. Thanks, again.

I am sad to say we are still at the mercy of Microsoft! I downloaded those cabinet files and they are the drivers but there is no installer with them. Can someone tell us how to install these drivers? They come as a cabinet file that has to be extracted. I did that and while the drivers were there there was no installer to be found! Anybody have an answer? Otherwise, I guess I'll have to use the 8.1 driver hack.

Looks like you have to "stage" the driver and pretend you are running Windows Update:

    Installing drivers
    • Open a command prompt from the Start menu.
    • To extract the driver files, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:expand <CAB FILE NAME> -F:* <DESTINATION>
    • To stage the driver for plug and play installation or for the Add Printer Wizard, use PnPutil as described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:937793 The staging and the installation of driver packages by using the PnP Utility (Pnputil.exe) in Windows Vista
Note To install a cross-architecture print driver, you must already have installed the local architecture driver, and you will still need the cross-architecture copy of Ntprint.inf from another system. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:952065 You cannot install third-party printer drivers for cross-architecture support in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008
      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/323166

I'm having my own issues with my UA 25-EX. Windows Update won't grab a Win 10 driver on my newer DAW yet on my old DAW there are no issues. To do the Win 10 upgrade from Win 7 I have to unplug my cd drive. Go figure.
Would appreciate any info if you can get this to work (or not work).

    this is really ridiculous
this can not be legal, they must make available the drivers for win 10, period!
this is a flagship product, even if it was a toy.
it's ok that can use this method for some people installing the drivers, but they must give the drivers to all if they want. for example, I turn off the automatic win update and drivers update, I use windows like this if I want.
We must have an alternative method to install (like offline method). we need this drivers Roland, or I will return this product! what a shame!!
people here trying to get the driver (it's not our job doing that) please ask roland to give us the driver, they got to give us
I already asked at roland us and roland uk
    this is so ridiculous Roland!!
waiting (six days left to return this product)

Many devices, today, ONLY have the Windows "plug and play" option for drivers - not just Roland.  This is really better, in Roland's case, as they kept issuing drivers for specific OS's rather than a general driver that will work on multiple OS's.  The drivers were actually the same just coded for a specific OS.

There is a method, and its been referenced on this thread about how to modify (hack) the Win 8 drivers so they will work on Win 10, if you must have a physical driver.

Otherwise return the unit, since you still have the option, and find something that satisfies your specific requirement.

you're wrong, i don't know any brand that don't make available drivers, unless they didn't support windows 10, or if it is class compliant usb devices, that's another story, but they have, so Roland make it available for download!

    this is utterly ridiculous

I had no problem extracting the cab files! You simply right click and extract here. There is no installer! Just the driver files themselves. That was the problem. As I said, Fireberd and a couple of others were nice enough to come thru with a hack that allows us to set the 8.1 driver to install as a 10 driver. I have done the hack but have not had an occasion yet to try it out. I will keep you advised if that happens. Otherwise, I am firing off another request to Roland to post these drivers. I'm sure they are going to say that Microsoft is probably responsible for those drivers now and we'll play the shift the blame game! Oh, well. Ain't technology fun, students!

@Sidroe, after the "extract here" for the drivers did you do anything? Did you have to do "Update Driver" and point that where the driver was extracted to or did Win 10 find the driver with no other action on your part after you extracted?

    These hacks shouldn't be necessary.
