Strange Tape-Style Effects

Ever hear a song where at the end, it either slowed down like the tape motors were failing, or sped up like the capstan throttle failed? I think "Izzat Love" off Todd by Todd Rundgren had that effect at the end of the song - where the tape machine sped up and the song became unrecognizable.

So
In the days of digital with sample accurate timing - how would you recreate some of the old style "Sounds of the Studio" such as intentionally slowing a song down to a stop over like 20 seconds as if the tape deck had eaten the tape? Or speeding it up to unrecognizable gibberish?

I don't see how to do it in SF, but then I do not use that nearly to the degree I use Sonar. I am pretty convinced that anything you did in Sonar is going to have nasty artifacts when the sample rate of what is being played back is not in sync with the slowing or speeding clock.

Just curious, bored and waiting for the midgets to show up at the office all wearing green and dancing Irish Jigs.

It's an embarrasingly deep plugin that will do something like what you want...along with a boat load of other stuff.

Think of the end of the track "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath - track one of the Paranoid album.

Wow two interesting suggestions in like 10 minutes. I thought it was just a leftover from old-guy music.

    Thanks

Yah, you can also sequence a sharp tempo change and process the audio with a deep pitch bend at that point to get the effect as well.

Haven't tried this yet, but I "think" it'll do what you describe. (From the maker of My Ray MkII and VB3):

Are we talking about the same effect like in a few places of Metallica's "I Dissapear"?

I have the glitch plug and I do believe it will do that like dantarbill says...and a bunch of other things.

I don't use it very often but it's a free plug.... so grab it and give it a try.

Space, if you have Adobe Audition 3, that's what I use to do this. It's amazing with near 0 artifacts. I can post up a few examples if you need me to.

Hahaha! Actually, yes....there are quite a few I don't have. I have most of the popular ones that have a good name within the recording industry. Hmm you know what though...now that I think of it, no there is just about nothing I don't have. There are quite a few thousand I have that I haven't installed or updated in a long time. You know how it goes, you get a new computer and you may not put some of the plugs back on again...so you don't update them. I have nearly everything though, yeah....I just only have about 500 or so on my machines. :)
