Strange plugin manager behavior under Win 7 and Win 8

I've had problems with X2 (64 bit) running under Win 7 not seeing all my VST plugins.

I recently switched to Win 8 and now session drummer is missing too!  It's in the cakewalk VST folder, and everything else in the folder is there, just no session drummer when in X2!  All my after market VSTs are in a separate folder. The last sub-folder (alphabetically) was "Waves".  It was ignored and never showed up in X2 or the plugin manager.  I renamed the folder to "All Waves" (to make it first alphabetically) and re-scanned.  Guess what? It was now there.  No other change was made other than renaming the folder.  I (and others on the forum) have had issues with the plugin manager ignoring plugins.  No logical rhyme or reason for it.  When I was running under Win 7, I had all the Steven Slate plugins in a folder named "Slate Digital".  It would scan all his plugins except for Trigger.  Just ignored it.  I moved the trigger.dll to another folder and then it would see it.  Very strange behavior!

Has anybody discovered a work around for any of this???

Try going to the browser and seeing if they are there. As pointed out above there is a limit on how many plugins can be displayed in a drop down menu.

No where near 700.  Like I said, to get waves to show up, I just had to rename the folder they are in. No other changes, just changed the name of the folder from "waves" to "all waves" and they show up.  Go figure...

I submitted a bug report but it got kicked out and I was told it was a tech support problem.  Filed the report with tech support and I'm waiting for a response.  As I've been a programmer for almost 30 years, I don't think this is a configuration issue.  This is clearly some kind of bug.

I was just hoping somebody had discovered a work around!

Bruce, for the heck of it, try this for me and see if it makes a difference.

Go to preferences/vst settings and then click "reset all VST plugins".

Then put a check in the box for "re-scan existing plugins"

Lastly, make sure all your VST folders are listed in the top window and then click "scan VST folders"

When you're done, take the check out of "re-scan existing plugins", click apply and then "ok" and see how things work for you.

A new VST plug manager was added to X2. If you missed doing my above steps, it could very well be the reason some of your plugins are not showing up. It's worth a try and won't hurt anything, I promise.

As for your question about seeing this type of behavior, the only time Sonar has skipped plugs for me was after a fresh install of X2 to where I did not do the reset stuff I told you about above due to being so excited to install X2, I missed that the tech notes that come with Sonar TELL ME to do this. LOL! Other than that, everything has worked fine for me. But you should only need to do this reset and scan one time. If it doesn't fix your issues, something else is wrong somewhere.

I do a lot of alpha and beta testing for various companies for VST and VSTi plugins etc. I've had to move plugs around to different spots manually to test things out and I've done some things purposely to try and break things whenever I can. Doing the reset and scan one time fixes everything for me regardless of where I move my beta plugs as long as the new plug directories are included in my scan. So try the reset and scan and see if it makes a difference for you. If it doesn't, call tech support after 1pm Eastern and maybe they can sort you out. I usually get right through in 2-5 minutes and someone helps me out. Good luck!

You're welcome. Yeah, just about always the reset and re-scan fixes it. Glad it helped you. I wonder how Bruce made out..
