Strange problem using Garritan JABB in Sonar X1 expanded

Hi,  Since I've upgraded to Sonar X1 (from 8.5), I haven't been able to get Garritan Jazz & Big Band to work consistently... I recently upgraded from X1C to expanded & nothing has changed... When I open the synth engine, I can play the sounds from the GUI keyboard, but as soon as I put in a midi file (either by recording one or importing it) it plays the sound once through & then refuses to play it again.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this strange phenomenon?

Not sure if this is related to you, I won't say it's a problem for me, but the way Garritan operates, I need to get used to it by moving the modulation wheel during playing back on the keyboard.. When X1 stop, it somehow reset the modulation wheel.

This is not a problem after recording (with modulation wheel recorded also at the start of the clip).

Thanks! Now I remember that issue too... I'll try that & see if it works.

Thanks tomixornot - you solved my problem - it had been a long time since I used JABB, & I'd forgotten about that quirk!

It's not really a quirk.

It's responding to CC-1, CC-7, and CC-11.

You should explicitly set these controllers at the beginning of the MIDI track.

Check out the options under Edit ->Preferences -> Project -> Midi.
On that page, there is a heading "Other Options", where you'll have "Zero Controllers When Play Stops" checked.

So when you play the midi, and press stop, stop zero's all your CC values, turning off the volume (CC-7, CC-11) and of course CC-1.

Set CC-1, CC-7, and CC-11 at the beginning of the MIDI tracks, and check the preferences for "Zero Controllers" + "Patch/Controller Searchback Before Play Starts".
That will read the correct controller levels for when you hit play again.

Have a good play with CC-11 (expression) CC-7 (volume), and CC-1 (mod wheel) with the Aria instruments.
They can work wonders to breathing life into many of those instruments.

Cheers - Cliff

Thanks Cliff... That's fantastic information - I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me... & I have actually noticed that those controllers are fantastic form increasing the realism of parts.

The trouble is, I mainly record real instruments, so when it comes to virtual stuff, I kinda have to start all over again every time!

Perhaps you might be able to help me with something else I've been struggling with in the Aria engine... I would like to controll a number of different individual instruments within the Aria engine by setting the various midi channels to send information to each respective instrument... but I'm at a bit of a loss to get this working - I know I managed to work it out the last time I used it, but I just can't seem to get it to happen now, short of actually instantiating individaul Aria engines for each instrument.  Since it sounds like you're doing this sort of thing all the time, can you help me out at all?

Thanks!

Ahh yes, you'll want to load the "Multi" version of Aria VST too.
Not that it's necessary, but the "Aria Player Multi" lets you have 16 separate audio outputs, one for each available instrument slot.

When you insert the player,  in the "Insert Soft Synth Options" dialog, check "All Synth Audio Outputs" under
the "Create These Tracks" heading.

That will create the 16 audio channels (Tracks) for the synth, and the first MIDI track.

Then you'll need to create however many more MIDI tracks you need - up to a total of 16 or more.
I often use more MIDI channels, sometimes quite a few more for recording CCs separately.

Once you've inserted the synth and created the MIDI tracks, you'll need to select a MIDI channel on the "Aria Player" for
each of your MIDI channels. So in the MIDI track header, select the "C" dropdown and pick the channel from the list.

Actually, if you're going to pick one of the "Ensemble" presets, you might want to do that before you go assigning
the MIDI channels.
To see why, just look at the Aria interface before loading any instruments - it should default to ascending sequential
order for the MIDI channel (number under the <> arrows).

But when you load up one of the "Ensemble" presets, the MIDI channels may change ... like completely :-).

From here, play around and set things up the way you want.
I recommend setting up templates as you go, they're a real time saver.
Like, when you get to the stage of getting the bare bones ... Synth inserted, MIDI tracks inserted, and MIDI channels assigned,
then save it as a "Track Template". Then you can call it up anytime from "Insert Menu" and save yourself from having
to insert and set up the basics again.

Then as you develop it more, you can save track templates for anything you like, with instruments all assigned,
all MIDI Tracks and channels set up, separate audio tracks for each instrument, all labelled and ready to go.

Audio output will need to be assigned too, the default is all audio outputs to the first stereo pair 1/2.

Just run through each instrument slot and assign instruments from the header bar, MIDI channel RHS under <>, and
Audio output is just left of the MIDI channel.

Have fun !.

Cheers - Cliff
