Straummy writes to the BBC again...

YOUR COMPLAINT:

Complaint Summary: Waste of Licence Fee money.

Full Complaint:

Re: ALEX JONES TRIP TO UTAH FOR SPORTS RELIEF 2014

Nice to see Alex doing her bit for Sport Relief, but can I ask who is paying the bill for the exorbitant cost of flying Ms Jones, her accompanying entourage, and her film crew to Utah? Plus, no doubt, they'll all be put up in luxury hotels for the duration of the visit?

Is it coming out of the money raised, or (more likely) coming out of my bloody Licence Fee, as usual. This jaunt, which seems to me like a complete waste of money, when I'm sure a similar challenge could have been found closer to home, is the main reason why I will refuse to donate to this year's Sport Relief. I'll allocate my annual charity budget to causes I choose, and not to those chosen by a Corporation that seems to think it can throw my Licence Fee away on little more than yet another free holiday for one of its overpaid presenters.

I'm guessing that the irony of spending a vast amount of money on such a pointless overseas expedition, while such monies could be given direct to the charitable causes is, as always, lost on the BBC.

No doubt, as usual, my complaint will never end up being read by anyone who could actually provide me with a reasonable answer to my points, but I've come to expect this from the 'faceless' BBC of late.

Today I read the Beeb are considering cutting one or more channels completely to save money. BBC3 and BBC4 are being mooted as the ones up for the chop.

BBC4 is about the only channel I watch regularly, and just about the only place to find decent music related programmes outside of Sky Arts (which I don't have), and brilliant documentaries like this, which I was about to recommend;

I suppose the license fee is better spent for rockets for Top Gear to strap on Mini Coopers down ski jumps.
They certainly are not spending the money for Dr Who special effects.

My idea of Sports Relief is when the bloody Olympics/World Cup/World Series/Super Bowl is over.

As an American who doesn't pay a license fee, I'm happy to watch Top Gear strap rockets on Mini Coopers and launch them down ski jumps. I also enjoy Dr. Who. As a matter of fact, I enjoy a large number of shows from over yonder.

Hope that helps.

Gosh Paulo, that was a long time ago you know.

it (pron.) Old English hit, neuter nominative and accusative of third person singular pronoun, from Proto-Germanic demonstrative base *khi- (cf. Old Frisian hit, Dutch het, Gothic hita "it"), from PIE *ko- "this" (see he). Used in place of any neuter noun, hence, as gender faded in Middle English, it took on the meaning "thing or animal spoken about before."
Whether the charmer sinner it or saint it,
If the folly grow romantic, I must paint it.
[Pope, "Moral Essays," 1735]
The h- was lost due to being in an unemphasized position, as in modern speech the h- in "give it to him," "ask her," "is only heard in the careful speech of the partially educated" [Weekley]. It "the sex act" is from 1610s; meaning "sex appeal (especially in a woman)" first attested 1904 in works of Rudyard Kipling, popularized 1927 as title of a book by Elinor Glyn, and by application of It Girl to silent-film star Clara Bow (1905-1965). In children's games, meaning "the one who must tag the others" is attested from 1842.

Yes they deliver them on lorries, but if flat is above the first floor they use the lift. They may ring you up to advice you that they will deliver said tele (not to be confused with the tele-phone that ELO sang about).

Hi,

Ohhhhh, c'mon Sturummy!

She went there to see the Mormom Tabernacle Choir rip your ears in half!

While I agree in principle, I do not agree with taking down in these kinds of emails as in the end, all you are doing is cutting down the programming. You cut this show, that might have been bringing in good money, and it takes down 2 or 3 other shows.

If the BBC is already looking to cut costs, I agree that a trip out is a little extravagant, but then, Top Gear will also suffer, and that is scary, dangerous and not a good precedent.

I am, as you know, of the opinion that the majority of American TV is designed for 10 year olds, and to make sure you can keep them tuned in for the rest of their lives. But instead of fighting a losing battle since they are the rich fudgers that OWN the networks anyway, and you will be damned before anything you say is true or right! And they will make you look bad on top of it!

So, our hope is the Internet, and streaming. When no one will buy the crap, maybe those folks will either die or finally leave us alone, but this is just like Marie Antoinette ... let them eat cake ... and the lords and lord'esses and what not continue to do whatever they want and you pay for it!

It's called "population control", and making sure the government has you in their sights. The only time you or I are going to look at them is when we want to see the new princess and what kind of dress she is wearing, or the new shoes or purse ... to make you think that this is what the country is all about!

We don't give a damn about anything else anyway?

I just don't want to see you dis-illusioned by the wrong thing. The worst that will happen to "them" is when no one tunes in! So SHUT IT DOWN, and when they go broke ... you can say GOOD RIDDANCE!

But don't tear your hair down with it. Go help Mosh learn to play an Am instead. At least I will listen to you!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

BBC 4 is worth the Licence Fee on its own. It'll be even better when the Malvern transmitter finally gets upgraded and broadcasts it in HD.

I agree mate, this was a fascinating documentary.

And probably made for far less than the cost of flying Ms Jones and her crew to the US.

I don't know for certain, but despite the ever-increasing budget, I think Top Gear is a net earner for the Corporation.

They sell it all over the world, plus there are, of course, huge ancillary sales of DVDs, books and other merchandise.

Again, I may be wrong, but I think that in the past, Jeremy Clarkson took up an option similar to George Lucas's merchandising deal with Star Wars. Or something along those lines, he doesn't just get paid for presenting the show.

Pedro, I wasn't calling for the One Show to be axed, for any reason.

My point was simply that it seems a little ironic to spend a vast wedge of cash on flying a so-called celebrity, her entourage and her crew (who I assume, will all be getting paid and will not be donating their time/labour for free) to the US to film a rock-climbing challenge to er..... raise money for charity.

Although I believe that there should be much more accountability as to the charitable causes the BBC supports (its Charter does stipulate that supporting charity is not just permissible, but encouraged), I don't really have a problem with them supporting Sport Relief with this stunt; just that a similar and much, much cheaper-to-produce challenge could have been organised in this country (maybe a climb like The Old Man Of Hoy).

The chosen venue for the climb may or may not realise an increase in donations to the sponsored cause compared to what a home-based challenge might raise.

It just seems immoral to send a (no doubt) wealthy presenter and a bunch of extremely well-paid crew half way across the world to perform the challenge.

Perhaps the Utah Tourism Board made a large donation to the charity (or offered to pay some of the bill) in order to get more exposure for the beautiful desolation their state offers.
