Strum II
I'm not sure what the latest version of Strum is, but my question refers to the new version that now has electric guitar as well as acoustic. I know that in Sonar X3, I have the older Strum ver that just has acoustic. Does anyone know if this latest Sonar ver. has the updated Strum? Thanks. LNovik

Since asking this question, I looked up the answer. It seems that with both Sonar X3 and the newest Platinum Sonar, getting the newest version of Strum, which would include the "Electric" portion, would be a $50 charge. Thus, it's not included for free. LNovik

Not sure if that is accurate. I got the Strum sessions back inJune or July as a free update for SPlat. I am not sure what version of Sonar that you have. Also I thought that the original question had to do with the inclusion of electric models and not so much about cost. I upgraded to the full version for the extra features anyway.

They upgraded Strum Sessions included with Sonar Platinum to the GS-2 version which has both guitar types. X3 is still the older version. The full version is a paid upgrade and adds more. But I'd give the Session version a try before you upgrade.

Thanks for that reply, MSORRELS (Matt?) However, I just want to make sure I'm clear about the answer. I get that X3 only includes the acoustic version. It sounds like you are saying that Platinum includes the GS-2 version, which has acoustic and electric sounds, and their respective acoustic and electric modules incorporated into this version of Sonar. But are you then saying that even if one has Sonar Platinum, there is still another upgrade beyond having both acoustic and electric components? Lastly, as I reread your note, can I also ask you this. You say that you'd give it a try before upgrading. Perhaps I'm reading more into this than I should, and perhaps you don't want to give your opinion in this forum. But if you don't mind, are you implying that you're not crazy about the whole module, or even the added electric sounds? Thanks for your time. LNovik

You are talking about two different things. Strum Session is the version that comes with Sonar X3. Strum GS2 is a paid upgrade GS2 Session comes free with Platinum. The session version are the versions that come with Sonar. The Full version needs to be paid for as an upgrade.

In the list of plug-ins, it is listed as "Strum Session 2" (near "Strum Acoustic Session 1.0" from X3). Also the plug-in itself has "Strum Session Sonar Edition" logo ("Strum Session 2 Sonar Edition" in About). This "Session 2" is in fact stripped GS-2, but that is not mentioned in it. Just for clarity.

There are actually four separate products here. There are two "Session" versions which have come bundled with versions of Sonar and their commercial full package versions. Strum Acoustic Session 1.0 came with X3 (and Sonar Platinum). Strum Session 2 comes with the current Sonar Platinum. These are special versions that only work inside Sonar and are lighter versions of the full packages, but actually pretty usable/full featured. (I think you can also buy non-Sonar versions of the Session versions as well direct from AAS). The full versions are GS-2 and whatever GS-1 was called (can't remember to be honest might have just been Strum). The second generation (GS-2 and Strum Session 2) added a bunch of features at the start (when I upgraded to it/bought it) and was then updated to add in electric models as well. The difference between the Session versions and the full versions is mainly in the number of guitar models. The Sonar Platinum Session 2 version has 2 banks (Acoustic and Electric) and 12 Acoustic and 12 Electric programs. The full GS-2 has 6 banks (Acoustic, Acoustic Experimental, Electric Clean, Electric Crunch, Electric Distortion, Electric DI) and gobs of programs under each bank (50-60 for some categories). The full version also has a bunch of effects that I don't think are in the Session version and a slightly larger loop library. The version included with Sonar is pretty close to the full version and I think makes a great platform for figuring out if you like it enough to get the upgrade (you may be able to upgrade the Session 1 X3 version to full GS-2 directly at a fairly good price). They have a couple of nice YouTube videos as well that might help you decide if upgrading is worth it. To be honest I'm not a big fan of the simulated string sound. Every time I hear any instrument that is based on simulating strings it kind of hits me as being slightly off. GS-2 is the best string simulation I've heard though. Its real strength is the strum engine and chord system, it is tons of fun to just play. The strumming engine and cord system really do work well, but for me the sounds aren't quite as usable. I do have a long history of buying guitar libraries and instruments and not getting what I'm looking for though, so I'm not sure my opinion is very fair. In a mix and as a songwriting tool though I think GS-2 (and it's lighter Session version) is pretty nice though. Hope that helps, multiple branched product lines can be kind of confusing.

The version that comes with Sonar is a good version but is nothing like the full version. $50 is nothing to pay for the full upgrade. You get more GTs and a lot more control.

I guess it was too good to be true. I still see 39$ at the bottom of the page but when I click on the button it takes me to another similar page on which it says 49$. But this not useful anyway since I've found out that Platinum comes with Session 'SONAR Edition' with has no serial number that I can find and that is required to get to the upgrade. EDIT : Has anyone actually upgraded from Platinum's edition for 50$ that is mentioned above ? EDIT 2 : Ok, it's 49$US in the Cakewalk store once you put it in your cart. Nice price but just a bit more than I can justify for the moment.
