Strummed Acoustic Guitar and Parallel Compression

I am experimenting with using parallel compression on strummed acoustic guitar. I would enjoy hearing the thoughts of others on this issue, including such things as compression settings and overall levels, etc.

Right now, I am aiming to reduce one signal about 4-6 db’s and then raise that level by 2-4 db’s in conjunction with the uncompressed signal.

Other thoughts?

Many people have asked for some default or starting compression settings. At the end of this excellent article by editor Paul White from Sound on Sound magazine, you will find a chart with some recommended starting settings. There is one for acoustic guitar. http://www.soundonsound.c...apr96/compression.html

It kind of depends on what you are going for, but for learning, I would just drop an 1176 plugin on the parallel buss and slam the snot out of it. Infinite ratio, fast attack, medium release. Now set your original track to the volume you want then back it off by -2db. Create an insert to split the signal to the parallel buss. Set the output of the parallel bus to -20db for starters. Usually I end up around -15. The compressed buss should add some weight to the sound.

You can also experiment with EQ prior to the compressor so that you target a certain range for thickening versus just a broad band approach. If the sound of the compressor is too extreme, which in this example it might be, just back down the ratio or the threshold. You should have a feel for what it does at this point.

    Gear: A bunch of stuff.

Hey, pdarg.  Looks like you got a subtle and a not-so-subtle approach to try.  Have fun!  I am big vocal compressor but not so much an acoustic guitar compressor, so it's good Middleman jumped in with more info.
