Studio Cheer
Nah, just kidding, I mean Studio CHAIR I've used a "Karsten" from IKEA for a few years but it's not very good anymore - it's worn out! So I'm in the market for a new chair to have in my studio. What are you guys using if you don't mind sharing? I try to get some inspiration. And I don't mind going to IKEA again. But I need something that can keep my arse, back and if possible, head off the floors for 7-10 hours daily without me slumping in it like a sack of grain. Cheers! Nah, I mean Chairs!

As long as it's not one of these. Over 3 months and an ocean between that chair and me I still hate it w/ a passion.

I've just used a typical high backed executive chair as mine for awhile....but with a little Spring kind of taking possession of it...welll....

YEah, I can imagine you do Rain Matter of fact, I think I've heard about that chair before Nah, I was thinking a little more in terms of a robust office chair where it's still possible to play the guitar. Not a bucket Ha ha, that thing looks great in a 70's movie.

High back, Trimph1 - definitely! I wouldn't mind somethign that would support shoulders as well - and my head for when I nod off a little Yeah, I've been looking at a few and thought I'd actually spend a few bucks on it. It'll be worth it. But they come in all shapes and colours these days. And I want them all! Perhaps. Except the ugly ones.

I've never managed to find a chair that I could use for both mixing and playing guitar - at least not "serious" guitar work. My current one is awesome - don't know where it came from, my wife gave it to me. But I still keep a little stool nearby, if I need to record guitars.

I've actually found that a good office chair will do for guitar playing as long as it is good to sit in while leaning forward a bit and also if it's possible assemble it without the armrests. But if I'm recording guitars for hours upon hours something else might be desireable.

There are a few office chairs that have arms as optional, or adjustable. I just use a stool if I'm going to muck about on guitar or sax....

Yeah, I really like that. He he, a stool. Maybe I'll get one of those too for playing trumpet. I usually stand up when playing it but I'm geting lazier and lazier by the minute.

ProjectM I've actually had a look at this. It could be pretty good and it's cheap too Mines similar in design, but its the leather version with full padding on the back. Sit in it for longggg periods with no problems and I have a bad back and hips. I agree with the others. You have to have seperate chairs for mixing vs playing and the Executive type chairs are a must for me with sitting long periods behind the monitors

Hah"! Found another one that looks pretty cool. Apparently the armrests come off this as well without making it all wobly. I've been happy with just siting in my "producer's" chair when playing, but had a look at a nice looking swivel stool from Ikea I might look into. It's worth checking out an alternative seating for playing instruments when everyone is recomending it

The Markus, if it is the one I am thinking of, is not necessarily the best for low back support. I am also in need of a better chair, but have unusual needs (high armrests are a huge "no-no", but having arm rests a huge "yes-yes". Arm rests have to be able to scoot under the desk, and better support would be helpful. I am currently using an Ikea Vilgot(?) and the arm rests are too narrow for how I have to use the chair (had to do a jury-rig there-failed to test carefully enough before purchase). The mesh back is nice, though if it had a head rest it would be better. Any other chair ideas? Unfortunately, budget is an issue, and Henry Miller is not going to happen.

Ah, thanks for that on the Markus - I was really tempted on that one. Low back support is really important to me. I'll try it in the store but will keep that in mind. Besides the one in my previous post I haven't found any excellent alternatives. That one is approx US$500 so pricey but concidering the amount of time I spend in it it would be worth it. They also had a totally awesome one but at just over US$1000 It's out of the question for me. When I get rich perhaps... I've found a few that are sold here in Norway but I'm not sure if they would be any good for studio use. At the post/versioning studio I work for we have some absolutely awful chairs. They look pretty good but in use they're absolutely ridiculous. Would work for office jockeys with cash to spend but not for a music and recording studio

I found this, but it's only on sale at Skeidar here in Norway and in Sweden AFAIK. Looks ok and is not that expencive. Not sure if the armrests come off tho. But I think I will check it out. They're know for high quality furniture.

You have these types as well and even though they are extremely comfy with all that pading and stuff, it's absolutely horrible and tiresome to be draging around. I move a lot from keyboard controller to my desk and with a guitar, turn around and talk to someone etc etc so the chair needs to be light and easy to handle as well. That's what I like about the IKEA ones, they're never heavy - but then again, they're made of really cheap material.

Tried something along the lines of that last one... the design of the arm rests made it a no go. Wise to try the Markus in the store... it might work for you, simply didn't for me.
