Studio Furniture Recommendations Sonar Producer X2/X3
Hello all, I live near Vancouver B.C. Canada and I'm buying a studio desk for the following gear. I'm hoping something from IKEA Canada or Staples Canada would work well. I already have tons of storage shelves, couch, chair etc. thus the remaining usable space is about 15 feet by 10 feet. I'm a singer/guitarist/keyboardist and I'll be working alone in my hobby studio. I'm going to try and do a fair amount "in the box" except vocals, guitar and keyboard controller, and I may opt for a hardware control surface or a touch screen at some point soon. I don't want anything too big or too expensive because I still want to maneuver in there and it doesn't makes sense (to me) to have studio furniture that costs a sizable percent of the gear itself. Suggestions? Also where's a cheap/good place to get things like LCD monitor mounts and such (hopefully locally)? The usual local retailers want way too much for these simple pieces. Adam A7X monitors. Roland UA-1010 Octa-Capture or Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 audio interface. Korg Kronos 61 and/or Akai MPK88 $800 keyboards (may only need one at a time not sure yet). Two: 24" LCD monitors or one: 27" monitor (not sure yet). Mid-tower PC running Sonar Producer X2/X3 and Kontact Komplete. PC keyboard & mouse. One: touch screen monitor mounted flat as a control surface (not sure if I am going to do this or not though). 12 Space Open Studio Rack. Obliged I am, Chumer.

No idea about commercial stuff, but if it's within your skill set, try building your own. I've been designing my own now for about 7/8 weeks, and am getting to the point where I've got to turn my ideas into practice and order some timber! If it helps, once I completed a reasonable draft using the drawing tools in Excel (yeah, I'm useless with graphics programs ) I made a mock-up of it in balsa, just to test the concept.

Thanks for the insights, gentlemen I have plenty of both woodworking skills and the tools to do the job myself and to do it well. However my calculations suggest it's not worth my time plus materials to DIY assuming I go the IKEA / Staples route, because as indicated in my initial post, I'm hoping something from IKEA Canada or Staples Canada would work well plus their (admittedly generic) units are very competitively priced. Thus I am not making comparisons to "commercial stuff" as referenced by Bristol_Jonesey, nor am I interested in going the commercial route, at least as things stand now. Of course my views may change as I look into this more, and others chime in with their solutions.

Well not to be entirely unhelpful but I'm gonna guess that nobody here has a complete inventory of the current collection of Staples or Ikea in their heads and since you're not interested in commercial studio furniture or building your own, you might be better served by browsing their websites? If you're looking for a basic desk of a certain size that's where they're at.

I really didn't mean to, I thought I went by your comments. Again, really not trying to be unhelpful but you specifically said you're hoping something from Staples or Ikea will do? And that you don't want to build it to spec yourself?

Surely to have a relationship there would need to be a little more interaction. Or is just one comment as long as most of yours last? I think you need to work on your inter-personnel relationship skills. You have managed to insult at least two people who came here to offer you help. Remember, they didn't have a problem, they have nice studios. You asked for advice. Anyhow, I hope you get some good suggestions. Good luck.

joeb1cannoli One of the best studio purchases I've made was this chair http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004P3WFME/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The arms flip up for when your holding a guitar.
That's a nice comfortable-looking chair, and I like the flip-up arms idea. I'll have to remember that next time I upgrade my chair situation.
Hey Carlos - long time no see. X3 is really drawing a lot of the old crowd back for a look.

Hey mudgel! Yes it seems to be the case... and I don't even HAVE X3 yet! ;D FWIW I've been lurking around, popping up once in a blue moon. But there does seem to be a lot of excitement lately (no doubt there's lots going on).

More of the straw man logical fallacy i.e. you misrepresented me, plus this time with specious claims i.e. plausible but false. Further you exempted the word "tacit" thus compounding your straw man argument. I would kindly ask that you do not post further on this thread given your posts are not of benefit. Cheers, Chumer.

RajahPHow is the Touch-Surface working out? I am getting more inclined to take the plunge but as of yet I have not. It certainly intrigues me as an alternate control surface but the cost (for large touch screens) plus the lack of tactile feedback gives me pause. I'll make my final decision once I get my new PC mid-tower from Jim Roseberry. The truth is that technology is so good now compared to 40 years ago that I'm spoiled in my choices to the point where it's more of a distraction to the music itself at times.

Ah yes, lots of good choices to be had on this Gear Slutz thread. Oh that's right this forum seems to prohibit the links I post for some unknown reason. Well, it's from Gear Slutz with the key-word query "What's the best ikea desk for studio?" Good night kids, another day awaits.

My guess is that anything you buy (especially from IKEA or Staples) is going to be made of particle board (or possibly MDF). Musician's Friend sells some studio furniture, but I can't speak to the quality although they do have reviews on the website.
