Studio Monitor Questions

Ok, I need some recommendations.  I know there have been a number of posts about this, but I could use additional thoughts based on my needs.  I recently bought a pair Berhinger Truth 2031a's.  The 1st pair, one speaker was DOA.  So I sent them back.  The second pair sounded great for about a week then one of the tweeters started hissing and crackling intermittently.  It would do this when only plugged into the wall with no connection to my audio interface.  So I exchanged them again.  After about a week same problem.  I like the flat sound of these speakers but I'm afraid these are not going to work out for me.  I only do MIDI work creating orchestral mockups for potential publishers of my music.  I'm looking for the best pair of active monitors for my needs.  I would like to have an 8 inch woofer.  I have a budget of $600 for a pair.  Any thoughts?

My daughter and I were out comparing studio monitors at a couple of stores a few weeks ago and were inpressed with the KRK Rokit-5 speakers... at least in the showroom. Considering how good the Rokit-5's sounded, to my ears... and hers, the Rokit-8s should kick it and they are 500 a pair at Sweetwater. Then you would have some money left to put toward a subwoofer. Some people don't like te way they look but I do!!

Aric for an 8" with 600 your not going to find anything Great. You can take a look at the yamaha HS80. Or what you can do is get a good 5" KRK or Tanoy's

by the way i wanted to get the Berhinger 3031a and when i listen to them at Guitar center i was like wow these monitors have to be worst monitors ever made it was that bad.

I use Rokit 6s and am very happy with them.  They are flat (true) and get excellent reviews in the trade magazines.  The 6s are powerful enough for me for nearfield monitoring--but I don't require high volume to track and mix.  Some people use subs to get the low power, but I find that confusing in mixing.

Do I need an 8" for accurately recording low strings such as a bass?  I won't be recording at high volumes.  I do want something flat.

    Hi Nitrox

How big is your room?  I wouldn't personally use an 8" woofer in a small room

IMO, yes. Nothing smaller will be flat down to the low E string on a bass guitar. Anything smaller will need to be augmented by a sub, which can introduce problems of its own.

Look for unported monitors first, front-ported second and rear-ported as a last resort and only if you get a really good deal on them.

Shop the second-hand market. Studio monitors are generally well cared-for (unlike, say, a used bass cabinet) and age well. Everybody ends up upgrading studio monitors eventually, which means a steady supply of used ones via eBay or Craigslist. You could end up with much nicer speakers than you could otherwise afford.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I have a small room, about 14' X 10'.  Why wouldn't you use an 8 inch?  I was under the impression that a larger speaker gives a better bass response for lower instruments like a double bass.  I owed a pair of Alesis M1 (6" woofer) passive monitors.  My mixes always sounded great until I would listen to them in my car.  The bass was always way to heavy.  I think this was because I would up the bass to compensate for the smaller speaker.  Before my Berhinger 2031a's (8") started giving me trouble, I was able to get two pieces mixed.  They sounded great in both my studio and my car with only minor adjustments needed to the bass parts.  What is the difference in sound quality between a 6 and 8 inch?  I'm not an sound engineer so I appreciate anyone explaining this to me.  The 8" Berhinger seemed to give a more accurate bass response.  I really like the sound of them, I just question the quality.  Thanks for all of your responses.

You can't really tell anything about a speaker simply from the location or existence of a port. This is useless advice. There are terrific and lousy designs of all those types.

    Nitrox,

ported has a hole.  More effcient way to get bass but comes with problems.  Bit is right, and so is Eotm, despite their differening opinions.  Many high end (multi-thousand dollar) speakers use unported.  At your price point, it shouldn't make much difference, if you can even find an unported pair.

My suggestion is the Yamaha MPS 5s.  Good flat monitors even if they don't have the bass extention we all crave.  You'll have to find somewhere else to check the bass, but the rest of the spectrum will be brutally clear, which is what you want in a montior.  Major studios use them as a second, bookshelf pair.  You'll learn to compensate for the bass on other systems.

I've seen some monitors with a ribbon tweeter.  What is this and which is better (vs. a dome tweeter)?  Once again, thanks for the education and opinions.  They are really helpful.
