Studio-Capture: Different Pre-Amps

Hey guys,

Interested in getting the Studio-Capture unit. But I'd like to know if it has the ability for me to connect different pre-amps to it? Not got anything yet but it's something I'd like to play with in the future. I know this thing as 12 pre-amps but 16 inputs. So could I use the other 4 with my own pre-amps?

Cheers

Yes.  Looking at the pics/specs those are TRS balanced line level inputs (13-16) for synths or external preamps.  You can use the Combo inputs too, tho some people don't like the fact that such inputs often times goes through the preamp circuitry.  You can look at the schematics to see that.  I've never heard the circuitry myself, but if you have line inputs use them.  But if you collect a few more preamps ...

I have been using 2 Studio-Captures for over a year now and I really don't remember how I got along without them! It has the 12 preamps but there are 4 more tip-ring-sleeve jacks to connect whatever you like. I have been running Sonar X3 with 32 ins and 20 outs with these things and it has been great!
There is one fault I have found. The USB does not control the power to the Studio-Captures. If you switch the computer off before the SCs the interfaces will NOT turn off. I always boot up the computer first THEN turn on the interfaces. When I power down I turn off the interfaces FIRST, then the computer. There is an auto-shutoff feature on the SCs set for 4 hours but turning it off does not help. I have been told that the Octo-Captures are the same way.
Other than this, the SCs have performed brilliantly. As a matter of fact, they have replaced my trusty old MOTU 24io system.

How's the latency with vst's? I trigger AD2 through my Roland Vdrums and low latency would be crucial.

I have been able to get down to 64 samples in ASIO using most of the Cakewalk plugs. Some of the hungrier plugs cause me to have to increase up to as much as 512 but with the plugin compensation button switched on the latency barely noticeable even with the latency set that high. My normal everyday setting is usually 128 and 256.
