The course is a great reply but the sound mix is terrible - ironic eh? There is some drum track annoying you in the background and the voice over sounds like day of the living dead. The narration cannot be heard over the drum track.

I thought it might be me until I read all the YouTube comments.

    Too bad.

As a Berklee grad I am a little embarrassed by the drum loop that plays throughout this.

With the name Berklee behind these lessons I expected much more.
One of the worst and most useless lessons I have seen anywhere.
The sound quality and voice is really bad.
Gee. Here is a popup window where you can make choices...

do they have the drumloop in the back to prevent people from falling asleep from the amazingly boring voice? its not working.
or is it there because sonar is young and hip and cool in a trendy cool and hip way?

I just completed 2 On-line courses at Berklee. Orchestration and Film Scoring 101, and I have to say they were both great. I am pretty experienced and still learned a ton in both classes, the money and time was well spent.

I'm not sure that you are not better off just working and learning software on your own with a book like Scott's, but if the Sonar class is anywhere near as good as the other classes, it would be extermely benificial to anyone who works with Sonar.

About $1100 (US). I did it two years ago. Definitely not worth the money.
Like someone else mentioned, Get Scott Garrigus's "SONAR Power" book and use these forums. Much cheaper and much better. Trust me.

Maybe the negative number reflects the usefulness of the Berkeley course!!!

There's no subsitute for hands on experience, a little research and forum trolling, and Scott G's Power books.

I'm no expert, but I feel pretty darn good!!!!

I took a look at the snap to grid example.

I maybe getting old... but I cant stand the background music or the mumbler voice... hence I cant listen to the stuff.

If you going to create a video on audio software...surely you need to get the audio correct???

Well I wont be signing up in a hurry for that sorry!

    Hi Gary,

There's a section in Chapter 6 about syncing with SMPTE. And there's also some info about using the video features in SONAR in one of the bonus chapters. It doesn't specifically teach scoring to video, but it shows you how to use the video features.

Unfortunately, I don't sell the book directly. I'm only the author. The publisher actually owns the book. You might want to try asking at one of your local book shops to see if they can order it for you. Or you can order it from Amazon using the link on my site. You'll find the ISBN number at the site as well (you'll need that if you go to any local book shops): http://www.garrigus.com/

    Thanks!

I got your book, SONAR 8 Power.  It flows nicely Scott.  You know I read these kind of books from the index, back.  Never from cover to cover.  But I'm finding myslef digging into entire chapters.  Not bad for an Engineer who never reads instructions of any kind.  But you know what I'm looking for is a nice chart that takes you from the DOS days to X1 with the compatability information clearly delineiated.  I have never seen such a thing.  Do you know if there are conversion routines that I can run on a group of, lets say .cwp's to bring up to a 64bit CWB?  Now that would be nice.  I'm by Mohegan Sun, if you are ever in the area.

I am sure Scott's book is excellent but another approach which I have found to be very effective is to simply get the Groove 3 tutorials on your respective software and watch them. Lately I have been watching a whole series of these on various programs such as Studio One, Cubase 6, FL Studio and Pro Tools. They represent great value and are well worth the money. They are very well made and presented.

The ideal sitaution is to run them on a separate laptop if you can while you have the program open on your main machine. Have the audio all running through your system. It is so easy to stop and start and do what the instructor is saying etc. The Groove 3 vids contain hours and hours of training material.

I have had to teach some of these programs and had to learn some of these things in a hurry and the Groove 3 tutorials do an amazing job.

Some on line teaching institutions are interested in charging you a lot of money and you may not get what you pay for. Spend your money wisely and carefully and you will do just as well. Maybe the Groove 3 tutorials in conjunction with Scott's book seem like a potent combination. I did not know about Groove 3 at all until I read about them here on the Sonar forums. I don't know who it was of course but I would like to thank them just the same. Groove 3 are right on the ball too as soon as new versions come out they are onto it, producing the tutorial and it becomes available pretty quickly. They have already got some great Sonar X1 tutorials up there now.

It is also worth signing up with them so you are on their email list. They often sell their products at sale prices and often a lot less than normal. If you are on their email list you will always be notified of such sales etc.. For example right now they are offering Sonar tutorials at below their normal cost.
