Stupid MIcrosoft - apps now "hibernate" on shutdown by default?
Has anyone else noticed that since the Creators update, if you don't shut down your browser before shutting down Windows, it will fire up again, with all tabs intact, when you boot up next? I just read that this is the new default - any apps that were open when you shut down will now load in their previous state when you start Windows. I can imagine scenarios when that would present problems in the context of privacy, especially if it's a shared computer. What if you had an incognito window open in Chrome, and you were viewing something that you didn't want your partner to see (perhaps you've been banned from eating becan and you were looking at becan recipes), and when you were done you closed down Windows without closing down Chrome on the assumption that Chrome would close down as well. As far as I know, Chrome does not prevent Windows from shutting down so you wouldn't get a notification asking you to close it. Then the partner fires up the computer in the morning and is immediately presented with that instance of Chrome in last night's state complete with illicit becan recipes. Divorce results. THANKS MICROSOFT!

The only way to get rid of Becan grease is to close the browser and run cCleaner before logging off.

That is a very bad way to handle things on MS's part. That being said, I have never shut down Windows with any app still running. It's a habit from the old days of leaky Windows (and fear of being caught looking at... becan...).

What happens if you disable fast start, sleep and hibernate?

Yes, I read something about fast start and believe you're right Wookiee. Disabling that should resolve the issue.

I, for one, hope they KEEP this feature. At least until they STOP restarting my computer without my permission. I'm always in the middle of something when I go to bed and the last thing I need is to wake up to the lock screen knowing they've wiped everything out and I can't remember what I had going...

I don't mind the feature existing, but it shouldn't be the default.

On a PC , I'm on Win 10 H E , I have disabled it to stay at a setting of about a year ago ...I still up date defender... This may sound strange to some of you guys , on the Mac's and versions of OSX I use ( older ) I absolutely love that feature ... I don't recall if after a shut down if it has saved my web pages I had open ... When it comes to the open applications I left open before a shut down they open back up to the exact settings I had whether I saved them or not .I simply LOVE it ... Different strokes huh ? all the best , Kenny

If I were to do such a thing - not that I ever would - I would use a private window which is gone after the browser shuts down and thus cannot reopen when it restarts.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I always close everything before I shut the PC down, always have. Just a habit I suppose.

I'm sure we all do James, but the problem here is that Windows 10 will sometimes restart your computer when you don't know it's coming! It's the main new feature of Win 10 that I despise the most.

I can honestly state that my Win10 PC has never restarted after being shut down. Mind you, I'd be impressed if it did, seeing as I unplug it overnight.

Does it? It's never done that in the 2 years I've been on W10, apart from when it's installing upgrades. Unless it's having a little party when I'm asleep or at work...

Oh it's when it's installing upgrades. Unfortunately, I rarely notice when it wants to install them and am happily working away on some project or another. Typically I'll have up to three different media players in various states of being paused as well as some file conversions that I let run all night. Then I wake up in the morning to a lock screen (and I don't lock the computer when I'm home) and I know it's done another 3:30am restart. Except for a few things (that Sharke doesn't like), everything else is toast and I'm left trying to figure out what I had going on.

Maybe the different behaviors can be explained by different versions of Windows?
I believe Windows Home generally does things automatically, whereas Pro and Enterprise give you far more control over what it does.
