Successful Win 10 upgrade(s) from Win 7 [updated in post # 17]

Easy Peasy.

This was a "bare bones" Win 7 Pro Install.

Next was the lappy (Win 7 Home Premium).

You should see how fast it is at putting the OS back to Win 7.

my DAW upgrade win 7 pro to win 10 pro went SUPER EASY PEAZY!!!

I had a few re authorizations, AD2, sum focusrite stuff, most drivers are there including my alpha track, fader track and tascam fw1082, plus the focusrite DSP24 and Liquid saffire, hell, even my old powercore element card !!

Now I love this much better than that krappy win 8 hahahah  the audio is better , in fact I am thinking of experimenting with the wdm drivers instead of asio

I am not worried about the spying issues I have turned off sharing

Hi,

All of my machines are on PRO versions, and I was wondering if I would have any issues with W7-64 Pro. I kinda did not expect any, and will see about getting that machine done today or tomorrow.

Usually, the PRO versions, being that they are meant for business, are much cleaner than the Home versions, and should have an easier time upgrading, has been my experience.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Good to hear MM, I too will be upgrading from 8.1 to 10 (soon).

What's the best way to do a backup before taking the plunge? (I normally backup my OS (C: Drive) once a month to an internal HD...... (I have Acronis 13).
I suppose I should be backing it up to my 3TB external drive as well.

Last night I did a full image of my lappy's C: drive. To be prepared to re-image if Win 10 upgrade fails to install or perform.

It used to be my secondary DAW but I stopped that earlier this year. It's now a "work from home" workstation and it houses Photoshop and Illustrator.

On the "downside" it's Win 7 Home. I'll report back in tomorrow on the Win 10 upgrade for that machine.

I'm saving the DAW upgrade for the weekend (and maybe not this coming weekend).

IMO to be safe, yeah.

To live dangerously jut upgrade. That's what I did for this bare bones Win 7 pro machine. There was absolutely NOTHING critical on that machine so I had nothing to lose. As it was, it was a seamless upgrade.

Thanks Baps.
I've been living dangerously in the past (before Win 8) and, luckily never had any (major) issues with the upgrades.....now, I'm taking a more cautious route.
When you're younger (& less wiser), it's ok to live dangerously no? How else can ewe learn unless you get burnt first?

My backups are the work I do. The programs themselves is not an issue. Drivers, might be, but I keep a copy of those elsewhere.

Since I have 2 or 3 computers on at any time, when I write on this one, a copy will be made, after a while, that I place in a difference computer. All my work is backed up on 2 machines, so there are two copies.

The plug in drives should not interfere with W10 ... it's just data. Again, data is easy to backup ... but when you do a drive image, you are wasting 75% or more of its space on stuff that can easily be reinstalled. You have the disk for those and do not need to back them up!

The only things I have lost, was before I got a 2nd computer. Before then, wouldn't you know it, when you backed things up the thing you needed and wanted was not there, and couldn't be found ... that is annoying, and the reason why EVERYTHING that requires saving is OVER THERE, on a separate machine, or one of those external hard drives, of which I now have 3 totally inactive, and empty, and they are enclosures for old hard drives, that still are great for backups!

I did it yesterday, 8-9-15. I almost rolled back to W7 because my business software which keeps all my accounts online will ONLY work with IE. Then while I was backing up before the roll back I read where MS had hidden IE, it's here. So I can use both the new browser Edge? and IE. I went through the clear type setup twice but somehow everything looks a little washed out to me. Also, something I always hated when trying another browser was when importing favorites it would always move everything and put things in alphabetical order. I hate that because I put things in the order that I want them in and I know where they are. However, in IE (in Windows 10) they are in the same order they were in on W7! Yaaaa. I am not sure if I can get them in the order I want without doing it manually in the Edge browser.
I guess the only other thing is a reboot takes forever. Programs load fast enough but from power off to up and running is taking at least 3x as long, no problem if I just close the lid and sleep.... but I was thinking this was supposed to be faster all around.. oh well. I guess I will stay with it. I don't want to be an old guy driving a 1995 Buick in 2020... I'm still not getting a tattoo though.

That's strange Julien for it to take 3x as long to boot up......I've read that almost everything is faster/snappier on Win 10.
Is your boot drive an SSD? (that's what I have and it takes about 10 secs to reboot/power up).

No, this is a 7200RPM regular HD in a laptop. I am not venturing to move my DAW to 10 yet. For a while my pg up and pg dn buttons wouldn't sork nor my up/down cursors, I tried F7 but nada... then they just started to work. weird.

2nd machine was done last night.

It was the lappy (Win 7 Home Premium).

So far only one re-auth required. Navicat for MySQL (yet Navicat for Oracle was fine). Photoshop & Illustrator ran just fine. WAMP was blocked because of WWW Publisher (turned it off and WAMP was fine).

I'm just glad that IE is still here because the Edge browser is buggy, I think. Aside from all my favorites being resorted the up/down arrows and pg up / pg dn just don't work right, sometimes they work sometimes they don't sometimes they half work. I need to reboot a time or two and see if it speeds up. I am afraid to try going back to W7, what if things go wrong doing that. I really do not see a gain from W-10 but I know I'll have to adapt, at least on my everyday machine.

If you don't like it, the roll back works very well and it's fast. I installed 3 times and rolled back twice, it's a long story.

I too AM now in this mile high Win 10 club, but it was a shorter leap from 8.1 Pro.

Believe it or not, the first software I tried (in standalone) to test out (Arturia's Dubstep drum synth thingie) had to be reauthorized......which I couldn't do even after getting into my online account and getting the auth codes.

How is one to be a Proficient Dubstepper if I can't even groove to the beat?

Re: First Sucessfull Win 10 upgrade from Win 7 Pro 2015/08/12 22:20:46 (permalink)
I had a dual boot with W7 and XP, I put my working W7 on the XP partition and did a clean install of 10 and rebuilt my system afresh as my main partition has been in action for quite a few years and originated as an XP installation that got upgraded so I figured on making a new start and dropping some of the things I don't use into the bargain.

Having imaged it I did upgrade it first though and that went fine and the lappy upgraded fine too.

So two upgrade installs and a clean one without any issues at all, no problems with hardware drivers or any of the software I'm using (Sonar 8.5 loves it!).  The missus did hers too without incident during or since.

W10 seems a few Gb leaner (in terms of hard drive real estate) than earlier versions too but that might be to do with the amount of moss I gathered on the old system over the years.  I've got W10 and the original W7 installs side by side now on the dual boot and XP is officially dead although I can still resurrect it at a moments notice if I ever feel masochistic or nostalgic.

The most painless OS upgrade ever, even given that I was lucky enough not to bother with Vista or W8.

Just looking through some of the items in Control Panel, I noticed that out of the 16BG of RAM I've installed, it says that 15.9 GB's are available.
Not sure if that's accurate or not. In Win 8, the OS took about 3.5 GB's.

Maybe Alan Parson's is right.......

Re: First Sucessfull Win 10 upgrade from Win 7 Pro 2015/08/13 09:39:22 (permalink)
I did a re check on boot time. I did it twice with the same results. I turned my laptop off yesterday and just booted it while starting my timer at the same time.
I didn't mark the time when my fingerprint scanner came up but it was less that 30 seconds. My desktop was up and working at about 1 minute, 10 seconds. All the icons were filled in at 1 minute, 20 seconds. Sonar Platinum was up and had a simple project working at 2 minutes 10 seconds and the CST scan window finished at about 3 minutes. However I was able to load a VST instrument into a track while the scanner was sitting there. It is working better. The up/down arrows are working better, at least on this forum and using IE. I did notice that when I first rebooted yesterday (I rebooted once before I shut it down) that it was very slow to shut down the first time then finally told me to not shut it off because it was installing updates. I thought I had it set to let me know if there are updates but let me choose when and if to install them. My DAW is 8.1 and is set to completely manual. I'm not ready to go to 10 there yet at all. I'm going to try to set this laptop to completely manual on the updates.

Question: (if you know) at some point I set a few programs far a delayed start. I don't think it was helpful and has become annoying. Do you know where I go to change it back so nothing is on a delayed start?

Thanks,
Speedy

Julien, would this work? http://www.thewindowsclub.com/delay-loading-of-specific-services-windows

Although it's actually showing you how to Delay a service, I'm guessing it's the same place you'd disable it too.
