Sudden distortion and audio tracks out of sync.
AMD dual core 5000+, 32-bit os, Windows XP, 4G. Sonar 8, Line 6 UX8 This is weird. I'm pretty sure it has to do with some kind of settings within Sonar, since it doesn't happen with all of my projects, just a couple here and there. For some reason, all audio recording is way too high and tracks are really badly distorted. Like I say, this only affects maybe one out of twenty projects. Also, on this one particular project not only are the new tracks distorted (I already had some old audio that recorded fine), but the old tracks, which had played back okay in the past, now were way out of sync. I don't recall changing the settings anywhere that might change anything, but something changed. I generally develop most tracks in MIDI first, then convert them to audio, so there are workarounds like copying the MIDI tracks into a new file and doing them over, but this truly is a puzzlement. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Its a driver setting or settings 99% of the time Questions: Do you have the latest drivers for your Line 6? What driver mode are you using? What ASIO buffer setting is it set at or what WDm slider posirtion is it set at? Things to Try: Try rasing your ASIO buffer or WDM sldier position. Try rasing your playback I/O buffer from 256 to 512 or even 1024.

Bob In Pacifica ...Line 6 UX8 I've been reading some of your previous posts. You seem to be alternating between 2 different soundcards, a Line6 UX8 and an Edirol UA-101. Do you have them both installed?

I stopped using the UX8 and got the Edirol. That worked fine for awhile, then there were a couple of these files where the audio tracks would be out of sync. So I went back to the UX8 because I like the Line 6 software that comes with it. I'm getting the distortion recording in some files, but not others. Same with the sync problem. If it were incorrect settings wouldn't the same thing happen every time? I'll go back and experiment some more but it seems like it's some files and not others.

Oh crap! I tried to jigger with some of the settings have screwed everything up. I don't even get playback sounds for MIDI files. Or audio. I'm not even sure what I did to cause this, but now I can't figure out what I did, much less what corrects it.

Run the wave profiler in wdm driver mode, then watch the videos on how to set up your sound card that cakewalk has. Cj

What CJ is saying is possibly what has gone wrong. I have 2 interfaces and rarely do I hook them up to the same computer , But a week ago someone posted a question regarding bit depth http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2253007 and so I was messing with my system trying different configurations, and I also hooked my other interface up to see if there was any difference in performance settings. . Well the next day I had this huge meltdown with very loud distorted playback. It took a total reboot to kill it. Lesson learned. ONE INTERFACE, ONE SET OF DRIVERS and don't try changing from 44.1 to 48 mid stream.

For the UX8 (and other Line6 interfaces), you definitely need to set it to ASIO driver mode. WDM would work ok only if you were not using it for recording.

Not sure what WDM profiler is and where it is. I run on ASIO (and I'm not sure what that is). But I'll try. I turned off the UX8 and went back to the Edirol because that worked fine except for occasional files that would put the audio out of sync. But the problem that occurred yesterday with the UX8, not even playing back the MIDI tracks, is still there. I guess this is a roundabout way of saying I've screwed something up and where is the WDM profiler?

A couple of people have asked if I run two audio interfaces simultaneously. I didn't think it could be done with Sonar. If it could things might be simpler. I started with the UX8 and when I had problems with it I moved to the Edirol, which for a long time was rock-solid. However, I liked the software emulation programs that came with the UX8. That was my mistake, going back to the UX8 instead of being happy with the Edirol. Both interfaces are in ASIO mode. Because of the distortion problem I have disconnected the UX8 and have gone back to the Edirol 101. However, the "no sound either on MIDI or audio tracks", which started with me fooling around with the settings, is still there. So I must have inadvertantly turned something off. So now I have two problems. I'm ready to give up on the UX8, and I suspect that the Edirol is working fine (it NEVER distorted) if only I could figure out how I killed all sound coming out of the program.

If it helps, I have another music software program, and that won't work through the Edirol either. But it used to before I screwed around yesterday.

Okay, I went through all the buttons and got the Edirol to playback audio. But for some reason the MIDI still isn't working. The other program which is a MIDI based program, isn't working through the Edirol. So now I suspect that I've done something somewhere in the computer to do with the MIDI drivers. Anyone have any clue as to what I did?

Okay, thanks everyone. I've figured out what was going wrong about the MIDI (stupid me, I just plugged lines in wrong when I switched back to the Edirol). So with the Edirol the distortion problem should be gone. I never had that problem with that device, only the UX8. I still have the occasional problem with audio tracks running out of sync, but if no one can think of how that happens in only random files, I can work around it by copying the MIDI information and creating a new file. Which led me to my initial thought (before the distortion and all the other stuff) that there was something in the Sonar program, a switch or something, that I inadvertantly clicked that somehow screws up the audio playback. Any ideas? I can understand if some of you view me as hopeless around computers. I am, but thanks for the help I've received so far and any further help about the audio tracks being out of whack.
