Suddenly My PC has no Sound!!?

Hi guys,

My PC occasionally stops producing sound. It usually only takes a restart to fix the problem. However, it's been a couple of weeks now and the sound hasn't returned.

The weird part is... When I load up a Sonar project, I CAN hear sound - no problem. But all other PC sound has disappeared.

Any ideas? I'm getting worried about it now.

Thanks,
Dave

Check your Sound settings in Control Panel.  Select the Audiophile 192 as the default playback device.

Hi Dave - not sure I can totally solve your problem but there is one point I can make. If you have Sonar open, no other sound - related program will work, including web sites. Basically Sonar takes over the sound system and won't let any other program use it. Drives me mad! I have found that if you mute Sonar (click the "Run / Stop the Audio Engine" button in the play box just to the bottom left of the Tempo)this will let some programs gain access to the sound system - but not always! Usually I just have to close Sonar down. Hope this helps a bit!

I think there is a menu option in Sonar that allows the sound to be shared with other devices. Plus the fact that you may be recording in a different bit and sample depth than the other device can play in, so you are in 48000 and the other device only works in 44100 sample rate. At least on my audio/interface those two will work together but when I go up to 96000 samples then only Sonar will be responding as the others need 44100 and I have to change the setting of my audio/interface.

Sometimes updates will mess up your settings, so go into your computer's mixer and set the default device to your interface like Kev999 wrote.

    Fixed!

Had my set up wired wrong from my soundcard.
Recently had a big cleanup/dust removal in my studio room and must've got distracted when i set things up again.

Thanks for your suggestions guys much appreciated.
