Suddenly SHS7 XL Will Not Play Wav Files. Can Not Select my Emu 0202 USB Audio Recorder.
Hello Everyone, Suddenly my SHS7 XL will not play any wav files. I mean they scroll but no audible sound. My wav playback device is my Creative Audigy 2 Soundcard. Also when I want to record audio, Cakewalk will not let me select my Emu 0202 USB Audio Recorder. It shows in my select audio input select list, since it is my default audio recording device. I can highlight the Emu 0202 and click it, but then SHS hangs, never fully selects it and puts a check next to it. I have the same problem in all my other Cakewalk software including Sonar X1 Essentials. All midi recording and playback functions are fine. Vista and Creative and Emu all say the device drivers are fine. I have been using this same conbination of Creative Soundcard and Emu USB Audio device with Cakewalk Software for a few years now, under both XP and Vista. Is there a way to run the Device Driver setup again in all my Cakewalk Software without having to re install the software? Is there any kind of repair install? Thanks for any ideas or suggestions. Happy Composing MidiVox

Ditch the SoundBlaster Audigy and just use the Emu. Audio recording programs don't work well with more than one soundcard.

Wow. I didn't know there was such a thing and wonder whose idea it was and why? Twelve pages of google searching showed that you must be the only person in the world who owns one. I couldn't even find anything about it at the Creative web site. Have you gotten any Windows updates lately that might have caused this to happen? Or some other program update? Have you tried a System Restore to a date when you knew it was working?

midivox Hi All, Dave Thanks for your comment but the Emu USB is an audio recorder only. It is not a soundcard. Happy Composing MidiVox That's not correct. the EMU USB is a soundcard. you can use it exclusively if you want. I have an external "audio recorder" also, and I have disabled my onboard soundcard and use it exclusively. they are fully functional soundcards. (side NOTE: Greg- you can't find an EMU-0202 USB soundcard on the internet? They have been discontinued, but they did exist, although not for a long period of time. http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?category=610&subcategory=611&product=15186&nav=technicalSpecifications ) having said that, it's not necessarily something I would say you would have to do if you didn't want to. I chose to disable my onboard sound because windows kept setting it as default regardless of what I wanted. however, you may have a problem where the drivers of the two cards are conflicting. if your system has been running for years like this then it's possible that windows updated one of the drivers for you recently and the new driver is more "aggressive" than previous versions. if this is what happened, you could try fixing this by returning to a windows RESTORE point before this started happening. if you don't want to do that, I can try to help you get windows and SHS happy with each's own perspective soundcard with your system. if that's the way you want to TRY (I can't guarentee anything, but we can definitely try), then let me know by giving me the following information: go to OPTIONS>AUDIO and look in each of the tabs of that window for this information: PLAYBACK and RECORDING DEVICES = ? DRIVER MODE = ? also, please list what options are available from the pull down list of the PLAYBACK and RECORDING DEVICES

Sure, lots of hits for the 0202 USB Audio Interface, but none for a 0202 USB Audio Recorder, except the OP. I suppose midivox could look at the back of it and see if there are audio/speaker outputs.

the OP is just mistaken is all. there's no such thing as an EMU-0202 that doesn't have outputs.

Hello Everyone, My Emu 0202 is the USB Audio Only Recorder. They made a different model that was also a USB Soundcard. It was very popular under XP for a couple of years because it came with 100s of bucks worth of music software, the light versions of many programs. The music software was all XP only. The O202 has inputs for a guitar and a mic, has a headphone monitor, and audio outputs. All their USB Audio Devices were made for XP and then given Vista Driver Updates and I believe last time I looked they also have Windows 7 Drivers also. The Recording is very clean and will do DVD Quality 6 ch audio. Thanks for the replies. Be back later with the answers to the audio setup questions. Happy Composing and Recording MidiVox

Hello Again The Emu 0202 was sometimes called an audio interface and other times a USB Recorder, depending on where it was advertised and who was selling it. I got mine at Frys years ago. When it first came out for XP. Vista did not exist yet. Here is the information on my SHS 7XL Audio Tab Settings. These setting are with my O202 turned off, which means SHS does not see it at all. Playback Timing Master Creative ASIO. No other choices. Record Timing Master. Blank with no pull down choices. Driver Mode ASIO Driver Choices. WDM, WASI, MME, ASIO Open all available devices is not checked. I checked it. Wave files DO PLAYBACK today. Sample Rate 48 K, default for Creative Cards. Closed SHS, turned on Emu, then reopened SHS Changed Driver to WDM, then Cakewalk run the Driver Profile Setup. And found Creative, SB Audigy, and Emu. Set default sample rate to 44K. Now my Playback and Recording Timing Masters are SB Audigy And I can choose EMU 0202 also. Also in a couple of other pull downs. Now I can set an audio track input to the Emu and set it to mono or stereo from the track pull down and a Recording Text worked, although the recording volume seems low and the audio input meters are not following the mic input but the playback of the projects other track. I think what happened is when I installed new software a couple of months ago, it installed an ASIO 2 For All Driver, which made itself the default for all my music software and then almost every piece of audio software would not work anymore. So I had to uninstall the ASIO 2 for all driver. Some software reset itself up automaticly with correct drivers and I thought Cakewalk had also. How do I get the input meters to work with the mic instead of the project playback? Do I need to make the Emu 0202 the pull down choice everytime it is offered as a choice in the Cakewalk Audio Settings? Thanks Happy Recording and Composing MidiVox

midivox - the 0202 is not a "recorder only" regardless of the advertising. a lot of company's marketing departments rarely really know the product. also, "audio interface" and "soundcard" are the same thing anyway. if the 0202 has Inputs AND outputs (as it does) and it works in windows then it's a soundcard, or audio interface or a "fred" if marketing wants to call it that, but it's still basically a soundcard and is not necessarily "for recording purposes only." it does not have to be a dedicated "recorder" but you can choose to use it that way if you wish. (but you can also choose to disable or take out the SB card and use the EMU-0202 for everything if you wish!!! really!! windows will use the 0202 for everything!) next problem - I think you actually mean "ASIO4ALL" not "ASIO 2 all" there's no such thing as "ASIO 2 all driver" you shouldn't need ASIO4ALL on your machine anyway. if you have the correct drivers from Creative for your EMU-0202 for your operating system then you will have NATIVE ASIO drivers and you don't need the 3rd party "ASIO4ALL drivers." if you've uninstalled ASIO4ALL then you've done a good thing! so now just use ASIO driver mode in Sonar and it should allow you to use the EMU-0202's native ASIO drivers. How do I get the input meters to work with the mic instead of the project playback? I assume you mean in sonar on the track you're wanting to record? if so, just ARM the track with the input selected for the mic input on the 0202. that changes the meters from playback to recording. Do I need to make the Emu 0202 the pull down choice everytime it is offered as a choice in the Cakewalk Audio Settings? if the SB card is one of the choices, then you might have to choose the 0202 every time. the SB might have ASIO drivers as well and if it does, then yes, you will have to choose the 0202 in the audio settings.

recording volume seems low and the audio input meters are not following the mic input but the playback of the projects other track. The 0202 has it's own software mixer where you set your input and output levels. Some audio interface/sound cards have a setting that will record all inputs to the track being recorded. In Sound Blasters, that setting is called What U Hear, I believe. Other devices may call it something else, like Stereo Mix. I'm not sure if E-Mus have a setting like that, so check their help files. RobertB did a nice tutorial on setting up E-Mu's Patchbay (?) mixer a few years ago. Maybe he has the link, or you can search for it. "the audio input meters are not following the mic input" Is it a Usb mic?

Hi Everyone, Greg The Audio Input meters are working now. Following whatever record track is armed. Yes, What You Hear on this Creative card also. My new problem last night. Every software synth recorded and played back out of tune. I have never even heard of that problem before. The only 0202 software is a driver icon that lets you set the sample rate and mono or stereo. If there was a mixer it only worked in XP and I never used it. I use a normal mic plugged into the back of the 0202. Happy Composing and Recording MidiVox

There's a lot of info about Patchmix (not Patchbay ) but I couldn't find how to open it. Do you have the original CD? It should be on there. http://124.246.74.198/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=298,E=0000000001303972792,K=5826,Sxi=3,VARSET=centric:1005,Kb=creative_emu http://124.246.74.197/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=225,E=0000000001303965193,K=9621,Sxi=5,Case=obj(1007),VARSET=centric:1005,Kb=creative_emu There have been some long-running complaints about some of the soft synths provided with Cakewalk programs being out of tune, but not all of them! How are you determining that they are out of tune? With a tuner? Or because they're not in tune with your keyboard? Is the keyboard in tune?

Patchmix only shiped with the PCI versions of the E-MU sound cards. The USB models used a completely different interface. The 0202 interface is extremely simplified, as noted. I received a MS update 5/11 that messed with my E-MU 0404PCI. Meters worked, but no sound. This has happened a few times, and a system restore corrected it. This may be the root of your problem. If you insist on using both devices, you will need to stick with WDM. ASIO only allows one device at at time. The tuning thing has me baffled. I have the same questions as Greg.

I didn't know that. Thanks Bob. So if I decide to get a new interface, I can now consider E-Mu without having to deal with Patchmix. Yay!

Hi Greg, Robert, All This morning I did disk cleanup, ran creative auto update. I load in any Cakewalk project and when I record on a new track with any of the soft synths including trying their built in keyboards or external midi controllers they are all not of tune with the other project tracks. Maybe a quarter tone, just always flat or sharp. So I am using Band in the Box Virtual Keyboard Wizard with the Creative Synth A and Synth B to record melodies. The pain in the butt I am doing some projects with deadlines, and I really wanted to use SHS Soft Synths. My new last Xmas version of Band In the Box came with Real Band and it defaults to using Cakewalk Roland TSS software synth. So I will have to test it there, outside of Cakewalk. I got TSS working in Real Band the other day, after a few tries. I can also test any plug in versions of Cakewalk Soft Synths there also. And in my Magix programs. I will reinstall my Yamaha Midi Interface Driver also. I will try to test Sonar X1 tonight. After I finish this new song. Band In The Box does not write to the registry at all. I do all Windows Updates Manually, and never update any audio or video drivers. Yeah, I did part of an update on 5 11 also. I will try going back to that restore point. If only one software synth was out of tune I would reinstall that one. Do not know enough yet to consider wiping SHS 7XL. Would a reinstall wipe all my software synths also? Thanks for thinking about this very rare problem. Happy Composing and Recording MidiVox

midivox when I record on a new track with any of the soft synths including trying their built in keyboards or external midi controllers they are all not of tune with the other project tracks. This is just a hunch, but I suspect it's not the synths that are out of tune, but the original tracks. My guess is that they have not fared well through a sample rate conversion. Have you noticed if they seem to play faster/slower than you remember them being originally? You have a tuner in X1E that you can insert in the FX bin of the synth audio tracks. It may also be available in SHS7. What does it show when you play a clean note with a synth?
