"Summer of 67" late 60's pop song

Hi All

Here is late 60's inspired pop song.  I had to sing on this one because the song demanded it and only after that I can then play guitar.  There is one part which I needed to redo the vocals, but coming back to redo it, I could not get it to sound the same as the other recording.  Same equipment.  It is wierd.  Anyways, comment and suggestions are really appreciated.

Hi Vicente, nice one, guitar solo is great reminds me a bit George Benson. Nice vocals and harmony. The end is way to abrupt. Would have loved some rhythm guitar to counter that staccato piano.

Those a nice breezy song Vicente, just right for the lyrics. Reminded me a little of The Lotus Eaters 'First Picture of You', just the mood, not the tune.

Nice job on this song, Vicente. Nice guit picking and drumming. It looks like you have the same kit I have...TD-3. I recently added a third cymbal and double kick pedal to mine. I love it!

I agree with Rik on the abrupt ending and adding a rhythm guitar to the mix.

Rik - Thanks for the comments.  I actually recorded a guitar track yesterday after your suggestions.  I worked and listenened to it but could not get past me.  I wanted kind of the sound of Sergio Mendez and Brasil 66 (but not the music style).  He had this grand piano playing jazzy chops in a bossa nova beat.  As far as the sudden end, yeah, I kind of wanted that, but it left people hanging.  So I added something at the end to explain why the sudden end.  The summers in those places, ends with sudden and heavy rain storms.

jamesg1213 and jamesday - Thanks for liking it

Scottytunes - A TD-3, yes.  Kind of small but it does the job.  Have you checked out the TD20s?  So nice but totally out of my $$ range.

I didn't immediately get a 60's feel out of it.... mainly I think, because of the groove...

The vox harmonies in places and the feel of the underlying song did remind me a bit of the group America (Horse with no Name/ Ventura Hwy) in a few places... and the octaves on guitar were George Benson-ish as were some of the faster runs.
Trying to copy a band's sound is not the easiest thing to do. You gotta get in the heads of the folks in the group to do it successfully.

    Nice job.

    Vicente,

It's a catchy drum-piano groove.  Singing is good but i think there are places where you have to sing low and it's not audible (what if you raised song a whole step?).
Maybe boost the bass a tad....guitar solo is beautiful.

Love your guitar playing on this Vicente - man you sure can play. I hear what James is saying about the Lotus Eaters vibe (I love that song) and this does have a bit of that. Some female harmonies would sound really good in this too.

    Good piano sound Vincent.
The drums sounds (not the playing) seem out of character for a 60's song.

Solo is good. Would have liked to hear a bit more twang on it.

    Small nits though.

    Good job.

Ok, it's nice but I think some vocal harmony's and some discrete double tracking would help, I can hear some but just a dab more.

I can hear the 60's feel BeachBoy/Donovan sound.

Can I make one suggestion, it's too fast, it needs to slow down slightly.  Here is a trick that I would use and it will add a cool effect.  Once you are in mastering and just before you bounce out use the audio snap pallate to slow the whole track down 5bpm or even 10 bpm.  This will give you a modern tape sound/feeling, the tape slow effect which was big in the 60's.  It should also make the whole thing sound a bit more laid back summer feeling.

The vocals are fine just add theose double tracks and harmony's and the vocals you have work, I would not worry about doing them again.

Loved the guitar solo very 60's and the ending is not a biggy esp if you slow the track down, it won't end so abruptly.

Ok peace and good job Ben

nice song. your vocals were great! i agree the drums are just wrong for this, too fast, in your face etc. i also hear this a little slower and more laid back, or maybe a more 80s electronic drum beat or 70s jazz kit would fit better? also, maybe some Hammond or a pad to smooth out the piano a little? great solo, love the tone you get there...

    Hi, Vicente,

Excellent job on this great, vintage sounding pop song!

Wonderful songwriting, terrific vocals and harmonies, classy, very tasty guitar playing and tone, solid drums, and you've also got a nice clean, fresh sounding mix.

    Fantastic work, my friend!

Guitarhacker - America was one of my favorite groups.  It must have rub on more than Brasil 66.  I wasn't trying to do an exact 60's song but something with a feel for it.
No How - You got that right.  Some places was kind of low for my voice.  Good suggestion.
Paulo - Yes! Female harmony, but I need to find one that can sing (better duck my head ;) )
    Bapu  - More twang?  Hmm..
BenMMusTech - That is interesting.  Slowing down.  Let me try that.  Thanks.
mgh - I wasn't quite ready for the drums kits of Brasil 66.  Let me play around with it
Benzofog - Yes I play edrums because they need more drummers than guitar players.  So I taught myself to play.  However, I still a beginner and there is a lot to learn.
Bob Oister - Thanks buddy for the nice feedback.

    Vicente,

Really nice song, light and breezy....  I think you captured a late 60's or early 70's vibe.  I hear America, Seals & Croft and others of that genre in this tune.  Like the guitar;)

    Hey Vicente,

This is great; finally I get to hear you sing with your guitar.

A Jazzy fun romp on many levels.  As expected, your vox (like your guitar) is sensitive and never overpowering (like some of the psychedelia of the 60s, IMHO) ... easy for general audiences, young and old, females, and anyone to romp.

    (No negs, IMHO)

    10/10 on many levels.

Awesome Vicente. Really fresh and bouncy tune. Great performances and mix.

Only crit is, I thought some of the guitar lead was a little too busy and sloppy. You don't need to play every note on the neck :)

Fantastic tune! Definitely has a 60's vibe to my ears. Great mix/production.

I believe this is the first time I've heard you sing...great job.

Perfect tune for the start of Labor Day weekend

thatsastrat  - For the guitar tone I am using my Boss GT-10 with their "New York Clean" patch.  It is my favorite clean tone.  GuitarRig does not have the sound that I am looking for, but they are coming close.

Vicente you've been holding out on us (vocally, I mean).  Those were really fine vocals.  FWIW- I often get a feel or groove vocally on my first take that I can't recreate on subsequent tries.

I think all the really good suggestions have already been made, so I'll just add that I enjoyed the song and performance very much.

way cool track...I heard more of your talents on this one then those in the past...you do everything quite well I'd say! I have to agree w/those above that suggested to slow it down a bit...it did feel rushed to me..but I'll give you this you hit the mark w/Sergo/'66...I recently (within 5 years or so) got turned on to them...love that stuff...and if you could get some fvox in the back...yea...!!!

loved the tune and thanks for the share!

    Vincente,

Nice clean song, but that's what jazz and pop are like. Clean and clear, at least for the most part. I'm on fairly poor speakers so this comment may be irrelevant, but it sounds like the song needs more bass, or a bass at all. Some very nice guitar runs here too!

Very 60s Vicente!  Nothing wrong with your voice.  Just keep in mind it takes at least as much practice to sing as it does to play the guitar.  That just doesn't leave a lot of time for us guitar players :)

You got some nice stuff going there in the lead.   Sorry I haven't been around lately, I  will try to catch up on your tunes.

Thanks Daryl, good to see you back.  Yes, it does take a while to get the voice down.  In fact that and the lyrics took majority of time on this song.  I did not realized that until I tried it.   An instrumental song is a lot easier for me to do, but I was kind of tired of that and wanted something different.
