Super new to music making, please help :P
Please bear with me as I have next to no experience with this kind of thing, but I would love to learn. I want to know how people would go about making riffs with instruments such as bass or guitar (like as the preset ones) more easily than by clicking on the strings or using piano roll and step sequencer without a MIDI keyboard (as I don't have one). Because obviously trying to record while clicking on the strings I have problem with exact timing and doing it right whileas the step sequencer/piano roll I find it odd as you cant hold a certain note as its more suited for drums (I think?). Sorry for being a pain and hope someone can help.

Welcome, Eric. Which version of the software do you have? There is a learning curve with any of them, but the more basic versions have fewer distractions. Plan on spending some time learning your new environment. When you say "clicking on the strings", I'm guessing you are referring to Studio Instruments Bass. For what it's worth, you can't record that anyway. That is provided as a way to audition your sounds. This is true of any synth that provides a way to trigger notes in the GUI. The most confusing thing for new users is that you don't record the sound from a softsynth. You record the MIDI data that tells the synth what notes to play. Understanding this is a crucial first step to getting comfortable with soft synths. This is where the PRV(Piano Roll View) comes in. It is actually very versatile. You can enter different note values (quarter, half, whole, etc) or manually draw in notes, and stretch them out to any length you desire. You can also adjust the dynamics of particular notes with your velocity control. This will affect loudness, and depending on the synth, timbre of the note. Read the help files on PRV, and play around with it. Again, give it time. You're not going to get it in a few hours, or a few days. Stick with it, read the help files, and try stuff. You will get it. And of course, feel free to ask questions here. We may not get back to you right away, but someone is usually around to help. Good luck, and enjoy the journey.

Also, whatever version of SONAR you have, there are tutorials in the Help files which are very useful, and an absolute must for a beginner to do. However, if you have the LE-version, there are several features that are referred to in the instructions, but which are not included in the LE-version. That can be quite disturbing.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Erm ok so I have a new problem, the sound isn't working? I think the playback or something is the problem. I have music creator 6 and the drums from the night before which is already made works fine but when I try to do anything new with any of the other instruments I can't hear anything. My driver is set to ASIO and the playback device is ASIO4ALL v2 HD Audio Speaker 1. I tried googling the issue and tried different drivers such as the MME 32 bit option with the GS wavetable synth and it still didn't work. I have no idea what I'm doing 0_0. Is it possible these problems are occuring because I am on my headset? Any help is much appreciated.

If the output is to the speakers and the speakers aren't on (or they are turned down) and you're listening with headphones, you won't hear anything. Is the headphone output available in the list of playback devices? Also make sure each new instrument you insert has it's output set to whichever output you're listening to at that time.

I do not think you are giving enough information. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120712134834AA9Hnx2 If using RealTek whatever, you may just need an audio interface, and not a built-in not made for it sound card for your computer. Whatever you put down for a speaker does not seem like a speaker or anything, so really can not tell what you are doing. http://www.sweetwater.com/shop/computer-audio/audio_interfaces/ Frankly I would get a good USB audio/interface that has good drivers to use, like Focusrite, Roland Quad Capture or similiar, or even RME audio/interface, but whatever you are using, I can not tell what it is, and I doubt if it works with ASIO4All V2, but a good audio/interface would have its own ASIO drivers, and that probably is the difference. There are other ones also listed there at Sweetwater or similiar on-line place on the Internet, but some do not update drivers as good as other ones, especially for like Windows 8, and Firewire devices can be a pain because computers use USB more now and don't even have a Firewire plugin on the computer and a PCI or PCIe can work if you can take apart your computer and plug it into an extra slot in the computer that is made for it. ?? I am guessing on that link because I do not know but there are other links you can find doing a search with ASIO4ALL V2 HD Audio Speaker 1 (whatever that is actually). ?????????
