Superfluous
Hi Folks, I felt like recording a song the other day, but I just didn't know what to sing about... So I did this: https://soundcloud.com/user9149108/superfluous-vox-up (Vocals turned up a bit on demand of 3 listeners. Thank you for giving me the confidence to do so!)...critics welcome! Best regards, Daniel

Hi Daniel, You have a nice voice, and I think that should come more to the fore in the mix. It's not that far off, in my opinion... Just a tad more upfront would be nice. Everything else seems to be okay. cheers andy

Hi Andy, thanks for listening and your review! I've been writing, recording, mixing this tune rather quickly, just to get at least something creative out of a momentary "writers block" and get some more mix practice. I find it easy to loose perspective especially on my own vocal takes, so your critic as a "third ear" comes in helpful and is very much appreciated Thanks again! cheers, Daniel

Hi Jeff, thanks for taking the time listening to my material! Glad you like it. "Great" is a big word for my voice (blushing...) In all the bands I've played I always did the 2nd part harmonies. I wouldn't know if my voice would hold for a 2 hour rock-show as a lead singer. Thank you for the compliment! : ) Best regards, Daniel

I've had all your songs playing over 3 times last night while I was just surfing the net and doing other things, with Superfluous it took until the 2nd listen/round for it to come home, but once it got there I really like it, and for lyrics which were ' totally meaningless' I think you done a great job with them, and they do certainly have meaning, nice bit of humor, well done.( are you really saying ' Superfulous' (note the spelling) ? I think you can consider your " momentary writers block" over Bad Moon Rising. for me an instant winner, hands down my favorite version of the song that I have heard, love it. Rewire Me, again, pretty instant attraction from the very start. LAVALAMP, how to put it . . . my least favorite of them all, still nothing that I want to push the stop/next song/fast forward button. 55Blues, instant feel food , happiness, crack open a cold bottle and sit there smiling while listening. Highway, a nice change and very easy to listen to. Exiled in California, it's like an old familiar favorite classic song from somewhere earlier in life that I have never heard before, if that makes sense. The ending, sound effects etc are a very nice touch. Sunkiss, another nice easy listening track. SummerNL2012, I think it is very well done, whats not to like, it's like a journey, just love the lead guitar towards the end, very tasty. Very well thought out and executed song. Smile Like Buster Keaton, When I first read the title I formed a picture of what the song might be like, but I resisted the temptation to skip to it to see . . . I wasn't disappointing Really like your work, it hits a ' mark' somewhere inside. I think your mixing and production is quite good. Your phrasing, melody and delivery I find really good, both in vocals and guitar ( that is you on guitar ?) You have a real knack with the lyrics as well, very good. All the little ' extras' you throw in here and there, instrument/sound selection, on the whole both fitting and well executed. Your voice, yes it is the 'G' word, in that for me it has a little something that sets it apart a bit from the heard, the tone, the timbre, the hint of gravel, whatever ( I'm no good at describing stuff) I personally hear something like a cross between Alice Cooper and Robbie Williams, both of which I hear in your voice at times ( don't laugh I do,) I didn't have a problem with the voice being to low, or needing to be brought forward, but maybe in Superfluous it could have been brought more forward, made a little prominent as the others have said, and they have far more experience and knowledge than I, so . . . Just looking at the overall, not trying to concentrate on individual aspects, I really like what you have done and are doing. My personal fav to date. Can your songs be purchased/downloaded/straight out pilfered, in high bit rate mp3 or wave from anywhere ? I'd like to have a good quality copy of them if possible.

Jeff, I have to say, I really feel honored that you took the effort listening to the my complete soundcloud playlist and also commenting on each song. I never found the time to set up my own website and make my songs available for download so I actual would "exist" in the music web world. I also didn't feel confident enough about my production level yet but feedback like yours is of cause very encouraging. ( I keep you posted as soon as I got something ready for download). Thanks again for your compliments on Lyrics ( english is not my native language so I keep them a bit "naiv". There is a link to the only text video I've ever made in my signature below, so you can even check the spelling), Guitar playing ( yes thats me) Vox ( I don't mind doing it for the kids, ...scool's out for ever ; ) and mixes! Rockin' regards, Daniel

Thanks Tom!
... yeah, I was staring at my DAW with this half baked project open and had no idea where it would go. I was almost giving up on it. So I just decided to write down what I was thinking at this moment ("if I don't start now..."). The rest of the lyrics came together rather quick. The trick was to force myself not to take a break and finish them before I would do anything else. I might give the mix another go and check out the vocals ...it could be that I had to much compression on the way in on the mic preamp, though. Thanks a lot for your feedback! Best regards, Daniel

The standouts for me in this cool tune are the background vocals (smoooooooth) and the lead guitar tone. Really really cool. Time for you to get a website methinks! Your gritty lead is a nice contrast to the smoother background vocals! cheers, -Tom

Thanks for your feedback! Lynn, 'happy to hear the song came across alright! I should hang out on this forum a lot more to post stuff and comment on others, I just have so little time and energy left after a hard day at the office. I fell asleep with my guitar in my hand in front the DAW the other day... man, something's got to change... music is actually what I live for... Tom, Yeah, the BVs are always fun to do after sweating through the main vox. Can't get rid of the scratchy tone in my voice anymore when hitting high notes. Feels like a distortion pedal that cant be switched off. And ...a web site is definitely due, indeed. Should be also fun to do. Phil, I had no concept to start with. It kind of developed itself. Thank you so much for the compliment on the execution! Gentlemen, Once again, I can't thank you enough for your kind and encouraging comments! Best Regards, Daniel

I liked it! Clever lyrics and sung well. I have to agree with Emerald that the background vocals are really good. As a whole it's a nice solid rock song with a bit of a pop edge. And the dub synth was a nice addition.

Daniel, This is a cool groover. Your voice is great and I love that you went with what was in your head at the time. The cool thing is you can always put new lyrics in later if you come up with something you like but I think it is cool as is. Nice mix and arrangement. What all did you play on this? The guitars were great and I love the keys/synths. The mix sounded great on my system and I could imagine hearing this on the radio for sure, nice work!

Thanks Tony! I'm happy to hear that the mix translates well :) I think I leave the lyrics as what they are ... what's said is said. I played everything playable on this track. Guitar is my instrument anyway and for the keys I'm decent with the right hand playing melodies, riffs and bass lines (I'm not the classical keyboard player). The rest is editing. The drums I programmed with a little help of Toontrack's midi. Thanks again for your feedback! (b.t.w i have visited your website, 'like it alot!) Best regards, Daniel

I think you definitly have the voice for this kind of music. The mix is well done...my first impressions are that you would make a good front man in almost any rock or pop group. The playing and composition are nice as well. The highlight is the vocal . I kept wanting to hear just a bot more grit in the vox..I know...usually clean vocals are said to be best, but I think your tonality lends itself well to a more gritty approach. I'm not inferring that you sing grittier but that maybe some effects might make it slightly diry...just the hint of tubes maybe?
