Superior Drummer 2.4.0 update available.

FYI

I found an SD 2.4.0 update in my ToonTrack account this morning. Have not installed it yet so I'm not sure what changed.

Kind regards,
Rick

Probably EZ2 compatability. So it can use the EZ2 kits and updated EZXs

I'm not updating my EZD kits for SD 2.4 until someone else does. I upgraded to 2.4 and every song I have in my list the kit has had to be re-tweaked from the factory settings. All my custom settings were gone! It's as if it reset everything back to first installation.  I know I can save my own custom kits but usually those kits get tweaked as well for the song. Oh, well! Somebody let us know please if it's worth it to upgrade the EZD kits.

I don't know for sure because my ears are tired from tracking today but it seems as if there is more headroom in 2.4. Someone else, clue us in.

Well, I bit the bullet and did the upgrades on the EZD kits. All seems well, right now. Some of the midi libraries have gotten a lot bigger. More choices and it seems to be more useable patterns have been added. Sounding good!

    Intresting.

But if you upgrade an EZX, does it still work in EZDrummer 1?

I would presume not. Windows XP has been officially discontinued, as it is 13 years old now. Hence new software doesn't support it anymore.

While I understand not rushing to upgrade every time something is new, you really should look at upgrading from XP. Windows 7 or 8 are significant steps up, and XP isn't getting any patches or fixes anymore. You should look at a new OS at least once every 10 years, which isn't really that unreasonable.

I didn't get that email. Maybe they know I'm running XP...

I would presume not. Windows XP has been officially discontinued, as it is 13 years old now. Hence new software doesn't support it anymore.

I am a software developer, and my products install and run on XP just fine. Vista, too. That's because I make a point of maintaining compatibility across many Windows versions.

Because my applications interact with Microsoft Office, I also have to maintain compatibility with multiple versions of Office, and let me tell you that's a royal PIA! But I do it because the alternative is telling a customer I can no longer take his money.

Seriously, losing XP-compatibility usually has one of two causes: the developer is too lazy and/or too cheap to keep an XP machine around for testing, or they are coerced by Microsoft in order to keep their Windows logo certification.

In the business world, XP still has a huge user base, many times bigger than Windows 8. Advice to periodically replace the O/S with a newer version usually comes from users who have no non-trivial applications they depend on. If they did, they'd know that upgrading the O/S can be vastly more complicated than just sticking in a DVD.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Bit
you can say that again! I upgraded one of my old machines from XP to 7 when the system Hard disc went faulty - it seemed only a bit of a pain - so I thought I'd upgrade my other 2 XP Machines - EPIC MISTAKE!!
As I purchased new installs (not upgrades apparently so I purchased the wrong thing anyway!) I had no idea how difficult it would be when you have lots of programs as opposed to a fresh install.
In fact such a nightmare, I gave up and rolled back to XP, which I had thankfully freshly backed up.
Only good thing was I didn't pay too much for the Windows 7  software, but now for me, both copies redundant!

They had to pry my XP computer from my wrinkled old hands! I loved it so! I never had Vista because everyone said it was a dog. I made the jump to Windows 7 with a new rig. I have to say after learning my way around that it felt very much like XP. I now have a laptop with Windows 8.1 setup to boot to the classic desktop. I'm not quite sure what my impressions are of it yet. I do miss XP!

Microsoft seems to roll out a successful OS every other time ... 95 good, 98 bad, 2000 good, ME bad, XP good, Vista bad, 7 good, 8 bad.  I made the mistake of installing Win 8 on my wife's PC, and now even simple operations like finding a file or exiting a program have become exercises in frustration.  I gave up after a little bit of that nonsense.  The wife doesn't mind so much ... mostly she just websurfs, though.

Back on topic, if anyone can confirm whether there are any improvements to SD 2.4 other than EZX compatibility, please chime in.

    Cheers,
    Eddie

I still have not found anything else about it.

It does state on the ToonTrack website that SD2 is supported in XP but it does not state whether the 2.4.0 update changes that. It's the EZD2 that requires (stated in system specs) win 7 or higher.

If you're running XP I would want to hear directly from ToonTrack whether the SD2 2.4.0 update will work or provide any value.

The thing is, it is out of support. No security patches. That is reason enough not to run it. I do IT support professionally and we are leaning on people hard to get off XP. There are other reasons to use a newer OS, they've made many other improvements, but that it is EOL is reason enough. It is going to become an increasing security liability, and increasing support headache (it is already a good bit more difficult to support than newer OSes).

MS has a pretty reasonable lifecycle: 10 years from the date of release, minimum. That's on par with RHEL and stuff like that. So like I said, you need to be ready to upgrade at least once a decade, which is not unreasonable. You probably need a new computer at least once a decade as PSUs/HDDs are seriously pushing it at that age.

XP is 13 years old, they extended support 3 years, so it really isn't unreasonable to make the switch to something newer. I can fully understand devs that aren't going to support XP when Microsoft themselves has discontinued XP support.

I upgraded to 2.4 and all my EZD2 midi files are no longer accessible in both EZD or SUperior...PLUS the two new EZD2 kits vanished in EZD and of course you can't see them in Superior now either...which was I believe why the update...so you could.

re-installed EZD2...as it got corrupted with the update.  All is working now...except that I have to update everything that is EZD2 related... expansion packs and midi files.
Superior seems OK and sees all libraries....and kits from both programs
My EZplayer now disappeared, but that's ok as I use Toontrack solo if I need a stand alone.
