Superior Drummer or BFD... Pros/Cons of Each?
I've read the threads here on EZ Drummer vs. BFD which seemed like an Ease of Use -vs- Higher Quality/Flexibility issue, and related cost benefits - but what about the higher end Superior Drummer -vs- BFD? I'd love feedback from users. Thanks. -tbf

Do you like chocolate or strawberry? It's down to your personal choice. I will say there is a greater selection of third-party expansion packs for BFD, i.e., Platinum Samples. Edit: And the folks who made Ocean Way Drums (which uses Kontakt) have said they're going to come out with a BFD-compatible offering, IIRC.

I don't have any experience with BFD but Superior 2 has been a breeze to learn. Nothing like the original DFHS which had me scratching my head trying to figure out even the simple "lite" version. If you have the bucks, get Superior 2. There's enough presets to get the "EZD" level user up and running but there's more than enough depth to the program to do anything a Pro needs to do. The NY AVATAR kit is great but SUP2 can also load any of the EZD libraries (EZX). You can even mix kits to form custom kits from any pieces you'd like.

FWIW, here's a link to the announcement about upcoming Ken Scott sample pack, which will be BFD compatible: http://www.sonicreality.com/news1.php?nbr=3044 Platinum Samples has BFD expansion packs engineered by Joe Barresi and Andy Johns.

I don't think you will be disappointed with either one. Both are highly respected packages. I use Superior Drummer 2, almost exclusively now. I have only very minor complaints about it, such as the inability to name buses or to hide unused tracks and buses, and the lack of a tambourine. In terms of sound quality and ease of use, though, I have zero complaints. You'll love the bundled Sonalksis effects, which greatly expand the sound palette without the burden of 100's of megabytes of additional samples. The transient designer is especially useful.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Yea Bit, I guess you'll have to get the "Latin Perc" EZX for your tambourine. And my two wishes are that S2 had a Verb plug from Sonalksis as well and, even better, that you could instantiate your own VSTs inside it. Maybe next version.

When you guys import the EZD libraries into S2, aren't they 16 bit?

BFD2 fan here. Groove editor built in is nice. The wealth of add on packs is cool too.

SD2 is simple and powerful as a MIDI driven SoftSynth, IMHO. There are many diverse MIDI loops to help you get started. Drum sounds are real authentic dry sound samples. I've encountered virtually no bugs, crashes, etc. (unlike EZDrummer and the NI stuff)... with my setup.

If you want something which is expremely tweakable and very expandable then i would head to bfd2. If your looking for some great drum kit sounds straight out the box then i'd say SD2, or you could just buy some of the expansions for bfd2 which already sound awesome out of the box. Oh, quick warning though, you may wanna buy a nice big HD for all the expansions and the bfd2 pack. The bfd2 pack alone comes in at around 50gb
