Surround Bus Question

A few years back I used a Surround Bus with a stereo track in order to move it's placement, (and spread) in the stereo field.  It works pretty well.  I just recently tried it again only this time with automation so I could adjust the spread.  The width control shows up in the envelope filters drop down but it does not appear to respond.  What am i doing wrong?
