"Swagger"
"Swagger" one of several rock instrumental tracks in in the middle of finishing tracking and mixing on... https://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/swagger the big question i have on this one, is how the kick drum translates... i'm building some signature kits in Superior Drummer and i'm experimenting with the kicks right now, i like this particular kick setup, but not sure of general translation. i'd love some feedback on it..... thanks in advance for listening.....

I've known for some time if I need a little "swagger" this is the place to come. Your drums and bass drum sound very good on my Rokit's. I'm still learning how to mix drums properly, and your mixes have served as inspirations and templates for me in the past, and this is no exception. Well done.

I did a side-by-side listen to some Joe Satriani and Steve Vai to see what their kicks sounded like.
This is a subtle difference, but it sounds to me like they have just a bit more attack at the front of the kick sound, a little sharper transient.
Some designers will take a transient, and put that slice on the front of the big kick sound that they like, trim to fit.
Don't know if you want to get that detailed, but I think it might sharpen up the sense of the beat, help place the kick in the mix.

With regards the kick on my Event 20/20's it is not so much heard as felt as a positive/plosive thump in the chest. Yes I can hear it but I think you know what I mean. I like the tune as well and I think some understanding is dawning in my furry little brain Thanks for sharing. had to stay and listen to Highway Star.

My Truth moniters never lie and those drums kick well. The song sounds great too. Nice, enjoyed. Interstate was sounding great as well. You always seem to bring in great sounds. Peace be with you, Blessings, John

Lynn thanks man. it's good to know the different systems folks are playing back on, and whether things translate smoothly across at least the majority of them. thanks for the input.... notnat appreciate that. Ultimate- satch and vai, yes, i can understand that a/b process, they pretty much have nailed their productions of guitar-centric stuff for years now. sharper attack.... check. i kind of thought that too..... and i like your idea of the transient designer, i do have that at my disposal with the toontrack mixer.... i currently am using (3) kick tracks, one inside, one at the beater, and a sub...... so, i'm thinking high end and transient on the beater side, and mix that into the other two til i get more 'attack'. i've got the low end covered. i do a HPF filter on the kick (excluding sub) at about 40 hz.

LOL that said, i think i'm going to put some more POINT on it...... via the earlier conversations, see if i can get attack to sit with 'FELT' thanks for the input

warren- thanks for listening, and for commenting what do you think about the 'sound' of the bassline on this one......? i've been thinking of going back and re-tracking, going for a more of a 'geddy lee' sounding track.......

kiosk project thanks for listening! the krk 5's have the 5" woofer, right? that means, decent translation down to about 55 hz, right? you know, i've been doing some aggressive HPF around 25 hz for a while now, and even roll off kick and bass below 50hz sometimes, trying to stay out of mud land..... but i guess for most folks, super lows aren't an issue, unless they're listening to it on a home theatre system! my sony earbuds will get super low, if it has mud in it, it will show up on those.... i don't mix with subs, so i have to guess at super lows when mixing, but fix using SPAN and Waves PAZ to help me figure out the super lows.

Excellent, as always! Kick could use just a touch of punch, the deep thump sounds (and feels) great. Just a tad more high frequency would make it sound better, IMO. I like your idea for the bass as well... Regards, Dan

Rob, the bass part was very nice on this one. I listened on the headphones then on the monitors. It seemed to me that this is a bit Geddy Lee sounding. I think it fits the song ok. At first I thought....MORE BASS but I always do. After 3 listens I think I like what you have. Thanks for asking!! Oh, the fourth listen is the best so far. That's always a good sign!

Nice, short and sweet. Couldn't hear much of the kicks on these little biddy computer speakers, but the rest of the mix was kick ass. Nice job. @

makke thanks so much for checking it out dcumpian thanks dan... i assume by 'punch', you mean some low mids? 120-240 range? i've been thinking about rolling the point on the low end on the kick up a bit..... i already hear 'click' so i don't want anymore high end....but maybe around 120 and 650? hm. more tweaking is in order........ chuckC thanks man........ the highway star cover was fun... and that's a bass tone i would never choose just on my own, but it ended up being pretty aggressive sounding... which is how i read Glover's original tone, aggressive.... i could not cop his sound without a Rickenbacker, so i just tried to go for the edge and attitude.

scotty thanks man, i'm glad you heard this one.... i know you like the swagger! heheh more point on the kick, check. serious thanks man! but if you can't hear the kick, you need new monitors! LOL glad you dig the tune tho.... warren the bass was fun on this one..... i just think i can play it better, more aggressive, and with a more distinct tone. i blended a track played thru the boogie, with a track thru the sansamp bass DI, and i just didn't capture it the way i wanted. i'm thinking of completely re-tracking the bass part..... so if i do, i might want your opinion on that... if i do, i'll probably re-write the part anyway, maybe i'll try some counterpoint. i'm always on the fence between wanting it groovy, and aggressive. think chris squires, versus paul Goddard (you know who he is)
