Sweet As You-Original Sonar X3 Studio

A lot of different elements going on here.  EZ Drummer 2, Hohner Pianet & Hohner Clavinet duo (courtesy of Toontrack Retro Electrics), a Hammond B3 organ (Native Instruments), Spectrasonics Trilian Bass Module, sax (if I told you it was a real sax would you believe it?) and some Izotope Vocalsynth at the end.  I wasn't sure I wanted to post this as you probably won't like it, but I'll put on my extra asbestos suit for the flaming I'm probably gonna get.

Just commenting on the mix, I think you have really upped your game here. Things sound nice and clean, good separation between instruments and overall mix balance is very listenable indeed. I like the vocoded part, nice job! Those ending "horn" parts are done very artfully, I like your choices there.

Wow John, this is very different than most of the stuff I've heard from you on here. I like the song you've got here. The singing just before the "As sweet as you" sounds a little bit flat in spots, but that's a tough melody with the fall and rise. Nice synth solo, and the vocoder part is pretty well done.

And no, the sax doesn't sound real, but it sounds good anyway.

Your mixing chops have come quite a way since the first thing I heard from you. Well done!

    Sounds great John.
The song has a Steely Dan feel (no bad thing) and it also reminds me of a band I used to love in the 80's/90's called China Crisis (not sure they made it in the US).

Loved China Crisis (still do)! Not a bad comparison at all.

When I was working on it I was thinking it sounded a bit like Devo, but not quite.

    Thanks Dan, Daryl and Emerald.

    John,

Nice work, you won't need your asbestos suit for this one:)   Does have a Steely Dan feel, your little synth solo sounds a little Devo'ish so get how you make that comparison.   The Vocoder is a nice touch at the end.    Good song and performance.

John, in addition to this having a solid mix, it paints a picture of a women or two I've known.  The vocoder part is particularly effective for me because I keep trying to find a way to use one, myself.  Keep up the good work!

    All the best,

This is one of the best mixes I have heard from you John, as for the Sax no I would not believe you.

Yeah, the sax is sampled.  I wanted to actually use my old alto, but I couldn't get to all the notes I needed because the neck cork needs to be replaced.  I really enjoy the Vocalsynth but it's hard to mix it in sometimes, depending what voicing you want to use.  Thanks all for checking it out.

Yeah, this is a really nice mix - open and airy, yet very solid.    Good song too; slick groove, cool arrangement and clever lyrics.  Love that pianet/clav combo!  For me it's imparting a bit of that Steely Dan vibe, along with the horn parts.
