Swing Me Higher!
That Heavenly Choir, Beagle-Sounds, Danziland: Playground swinging and ponderings! (WARNING: Psalm 35 here gets a bit paranoic and/or imprecatory: PG rated!) http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10633630 Lead Vocals and Backing Choirs: Reece Bain, Philip Traynor, Josh, Joy Keyboard, Grooves and Percussives: Philip Traynor Glockenspiel: Caleb Traynor Bass Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Lead Guitars, Post-Production: Danny Danzi III Please lurk, listen, comment, crit, insult, etc. Notes: - Lyrics should be on site - Reece seems quite stellar, IMHO ... both in leading the chorus and layering-up his backing choirs. Consider commenting on his performances. - Danny's guitars seem spot-on magical (to my ears) ... placing you deeply inside the carnival landscape. Please validate and/or inquire his awesome tones and techniques. - This is a skating song (hip hop) ... expect some low end thus. - I'm a little concerned about my verse-chorus balance ... volume-wise. If that 'sticks-out' as a negative, please validate. Else, utmost thanks and blessings to all!

I wasn't expecting that. There's definitely some thinking outside the box on this production. There is a lot going on, and like jamesyoyo said, it's gonna take a while for it to sink in. Regardless, I like it a lot on first impression mainly because it is cross genre in many directions. Way to go everyone.

I find the texture fascinating and the message seems delivered with a sincerity that seems remarkable. At first I thought the tempo seemed to slow for the message but then I considered the frequency of swinging back and forth on a swing set and I started to appreciate the pacing more. I think the fascinating texture is the most noteworthy. It sounds so interesting that it kept my attention focused on the tune. all the best, mike

Very original, vocal intonation could be tighter throughout the song. Nice sparkly mix if a bit wider than I think is necessary. Overall though very well produced piece of art gentlemen.

Lots of textures and contrasts going on Philip. This is an absolutely fascinating piece of work. It is sooo busy, that it holds my attention all the way through from opening note to closing; just trying to catch eveything that is happening with in the song. I actually had to listen to it several times just to absorb it all. Also, you have certainly poured your heart and soul into this one. This must have been a tough piece for you to work on. I think Mike is absolutely correct on the tempo, it does have a "swinging" pace and feel to it and seems about perfect for the song. Reese did do a stella job on leading the chorus's, they sound great. In a way, those chorus's are kind of the glue or consistancy that pull everything together. You have lots of effects going on with the verse vocals and at times it is a little hard to make out the message. It helps to have the lyrics to follow in that respect. Danny's guitars are excellent as expected. Post production is excellent. This has a very wide stereo feel to it which I love.

love this one Philip, it's by far the most 'normal' song you've ever released, other than the multitude of vocals, the music itself is quite conventional. it has an awesome sense of bass and depth listening on my Sennheiser 'phones, and whilst i perhaps miss the old Philip weirdo instrumentation and unusual structure, i have to admit this is more catchy in many ways. and of course, given what has happened over the last years, to carry on recording with the kids is inspiring, to me at least.

Thanks all, Scotty, MGH, Tim, James, Bapu, Pistolpete, Mike (Makeshift), Twisted, Munmum, Mike_mccue, Lynn, The Band. I understand this is not everyone's cuppa! Target audiences are specifically urban tweens, skaters, and/or persecuted Christians. Regarding the need for a "singer" (Tim) ... I seriously invite you (Tim) to lead the verses! Else ... someone may want to elaborate/clarify ... as my verse vocs seem pretty 'soulful', 'true', and excellent to my ears, IMHO ... and, all singers here are veteran singers. Joy has sung about 30 songs and sings regularly at church ... few child-singers I've tested can approximate her. And, who could sing this chorus better than Reece? Tim? Julianna? Twisted? Yoyo? Danny? Respectfully, Reece's child-like innocence, compassion, and aspiring professionalism seemed absolutely perfect here. (Any thoughts anyone?) ... to 'swing' (serve) with the rhythm-dominance (bass drums and bass guitar) ... and 'meekly' draw attention to peculiar soul-troubles going on in the psalmist (Ps 35). Albeit, I agree the middle cries could have used an Alice-Cooper ... Again ... the Ps 35 verse-vocs were to draw attention if the listener himself or herself were the persecuted-paranoid Christian sort ... as King David seemed ... when he fled from his enemies (Saul, King Achish, Absolom, etc.). I think Danny may have chosen to widen things a bit (post-production) ... for hip-hop-pop's sake and/or the skate floor. I haven't tested this at the skating rink yet. Anyway, utmost thanks and blessings all!

Sorry Philip, I haven't got round to listening, my life is a bit busy at the moment. Ok you have put together your own sound, I can't get enough of your pitchshifted voices. It has a real lilting melencholy, which I love. What I love about your tunes is though there is a Christian message, I can never hear it. All I hear is beautiful production and this happiness in what you sing. Now the problem is the mix it is a little busy, I think it could be fixed though in mastering. The mids are a little high and piercing, so just watch that. Also as I have been suggesting to quite a few today watch those low-mids, just bump a little off and it will help clear the mud, so the mix then wont sound so busy. But a great tune Philip and I would actully buy your record. Peace Ben

This song might have problems, but I had trouble focusing on that because I was so thoroughly enjoying the laid back dance groove with so many awesome surfaces. Very neo-orchestral. Freakin' awesome. I love it when I know I'm going to love a song from the first bar... seriously dude. Love the lounge music. And by lounge I mean, I could hear it in a coffee shop, not the definition the world gives lounge music.

thanks everyone for the great comments! the song and production is completely Philips, I just added some vocals for him. when he sent the song to me, I was immediately inspired to sing not only what he asked me to, but to add some harmonies as well. Philip's productions have always been "busy" and this one is no exception. it's very "Philip-esque" if you ask me. he has a trademark sound and this song certainly falls into the same trademark, IMO. and I just love the fact that he gets his kids to play and sing with him! Danny's guitar in this is awesome, IMO! cheers on this, Philip! you did a great job!

ReecePhilip's productions have always been "busy" and this one is no exception. it's very "Philip-esque" if you ask me. he has a trademark sound and this song certainly falls into the same trademark, IMO. and I just love the fact that he gets his kids to play and sing with him! My thoughts exactly brother. He just has that knack for squeezing everything in and making it work. It may take a few listens to take in all that's going on, but to me this is what gives Philip his trademark sound. I often times feel he feels bad when he doesn't use all the samples I create for him...because it would be too easy for him to put everything in and figure out a way to make them all work. You did a really nice job on this too, Reece. :) Your voice gets better with each song. Philip: What really gets me is how clear your productions always are. Don't ever sacrifice that for dirty or analog warmth, brother. Then again, if that's what you feel, go for it and follow your heart at all times. I'm glad you stopped using "the plug we will not mention". LOL! I call it Voldemort LOL! It just trashes everything in my opinion and muds things up. How people use that thing is beyond me. It's cool when used very lightly but man, jump on it a little more and your mix just jumps off a bridge. I wonder how much the creator of that plug paid people with big names to brag that they use it. Must be that I'm clueless because I cringe when I use it or hear other people using it...uggh! You had mentioned widening...no man, I just about never use any widening on your stuff due to you using quite a bit of wide pans on things already. The only song I ever used a widener on that we've done was Trouble in the Hood (I'm unable) because I had to push the rock part of the mix near the pans we used on the rap part of the mix. I didn't hear any of the stuff Ben mentioned on my end. I've actually never heard a mid "piercing" before...they add warmth, not presence over here. Mids and high mids sound fine here, I don't hear any sibs or high end harshness, no mud or low mid mud or congestion...a little rich in the LOW low end for me, but I know you want/like that which is why I added it in for skate/car. It's tight low end though, nothing flabby so we can get away with it. Not saying I disagree with what you hear Ben, but I sure don't hear it on the gear I use here. This baby sound clear as a bell with a thump that can rattle your bile ducts. :) What are you listening on? Anyway, great job on this Philip. A lot going on of course, but in a good way. Sort of like coming over a bridge into a major city for the first time. You don't know what to look at...and you may have to go over that bridge 5 times to take it all in, yet it's beautiful every time. That's how this mix and your others come across to me...even without me being involved in them. You're just as great on your own with no one collaborating with you...things just sound a little different but always great and unmistakenly "Philip". :) -Danny

okay, had some time to let this sink in. Quite undefinable. The French would call it a melange. Liked Reece's voice in this. Woulda added some more reverb and pushed it back a bit. Bass sounds awesome. Coupla bum vocal notes. Generally, a rapper raps and has a singer sing. I would encourage you to throw a few triplet couplets into your raps: they fit more words in and sound real cool. The ending is cool weird and abrupt.
