Switch Hand Lotion?

How_Acidic_Are_Your_Hands

"How does Hands Off!™ Work?
Surprisingly, our hands are quite acidic with a pH value of 5.5-far more acidic than 7.0 the pH value that's considered to be acid-free. Our chemists, using "aqueous ion" technology, formulated Hands Off! ™ lotion and soap to neutralize the natural acid present on unprotected hands. When used in conjunction with Hands Off! ™ Acid Neutralizing Soap, the lotion keeps hands at an acid-free pH level of 7.5 for up to two hours."

Hands Off Hand Lotion

I have never tried it but it seems like an interesting idea.

So... if your hands create acid after using soap, why don't they after using that cream?

Base players should wash their hands with bar soap often.

But I want to know how they know about my hands (and where they might have been)?

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Been a while since I studied any of the sciences but isn't a pH of 5.5 about 'normal' for skin, so why on earth would it be beneficial to change it?

I think Karyn hit the nail on the head. No doubt lots of people buy it and swear by it. I'm off to bottle some more 'Peckham' spring water for my next shipment to the local supermarket.

    FWIW,

This product seems to be widely used and recommended in the field of visual arts conservation.

Apparently, it is thought that handling cotton paper, matte board, and backing that has been neutralized to ph 7.0 with hands at 5.5 is not as conservative as handling the 7.0 paper with hands that have been temporarily treated to have a similar 7.0 ph.

I don't think it's snake oil... I just think the application for various activities may or may not be as suitable or effective.

    best regards,
    mike

This may come as a bit of a shock Mike, but given your track record on 'facts' I don't actually take much notice of any of the web links you post. However my point was if it is normal for hands to have a pH of 5.4 I would think using anything to change that natural state would be fool hardy if nothing else.

Buy a box load if it makes you feel better. Can I interest you in some bottled water?

Your hands, just like the rest of you, are constantly sweating and your sweat contains all sorts of minerals and oils which make it mildly acidic (actually more corrosive than acidic).

    LOL

I thought this was a new spam post. Didn't understand why it had so many replies

Yup, gloves is where it's at! If you touch the Mona Lisa with bare hands - no matter what kind of soap you have used - you will get shot! Not by the police or security guards, but the kindest, nicest, most passionate art conservation expert you have ever met.

If anything, this would be great when toucing batteries and halogen light bulbs...

But I don't think this is much more than snake oil.

I can see where it might keep the PH altered for longer than soap, but in the case of handling special materials, do you want to get the lotion on them anyway? Gloves, clean room protocals, it might be good for instruments, fretboards etc.

Here in Florida it takes about 30 seconds for a nice pair of white cotton gloves to get wet with all that sweat that has been mentioned.

Same thing for the white socks.

    :-)

The question might occur to some: What PH are the white cotton gloves?

I thought they used latex cloves...

    Maybe they use cotton too.

Cotton is ph 6,5-7. but I don't trust my source on this.
