Switching focus from Sonar X3 to TotalMix FX (Babyface Audio Interface)

TotalMix FX is the mixer software that comes with the Babyface audio interface.
When I click on it to change a setting, the input level meters on the mic channel in Sonar don't work even though there is signal coming in as I can hear it. Is this normal behaviour as Sonar is not the program in focus or is there a setting I can change to enable this.
Also, the mic level drops when I switch to TotalMix. I know this is because I am listening just to this software and not Sonar, but again, is there something I can do to remedy this?
The audio from the Babyface is passed directly to Sonar with no changes, it is basically a monitoring mix software.
Thanks in advance.

Make sure "Share Drivers With Other Programs" in Preferences > Audio > Playback and Recording is not checked.
