Switching to 64 bit

Hey, So I'm in the process of building a new 64bit pc. I have previously been running Sonar 32 bit. Wondering if anyone has had any problems in the past loading 32bit projects into the 64bit version of Sonar? I'd hate to lose all my previous work....

You can open a project started in Sonar 64bit in Sonar 32bit, and vice versa. Projects don't differentiate between 32bit or 64bit ... but your FX do.

Some 32bit effects, especially older Direct X ones won't run in a 64bit environment.

Some 32bit VST FX don't work well with Bitbridge. Bitbridge is a program that allows 32bit VST FX to run in Sonar 64. It runs in the background and you don't even know it's running until it crashes. You get an error that says 'Teleport Server Error'.

Good news is ... you can load Sonar 32bit and 64 bit on the same system. You can even run multiple versions of Sonar. So if you do run in to trouble, just fire up the old reliable version that you know works. Edit: The problem with this is, if you try to open a project created in a newer version of Sonar in to an older version, you will lose functionality of the newer version. You may have to start the project in safe mode. Do this by hold down 'Shift' when you open the project.

I like to keep 3 versions of a project. 1: Full desk reset, all gain stages set, but no FX. 2: Final mix 3: Final mix with all FX frozen. I do #3 in case I want to open the project in a future version of Sonar or Windows that doesn't support the FX I used.

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck!

    Bub.

No problem w/ 32/64 bits.  I've been finishing a bunch of projects in 64 that started in 32 bits with a new computer.  The most annoying thing about 64 bits is that old 32 bit effects won't go into the dock.  Oh course, they are scattered around the project face, just like in regular 32 bit projects.

What I found helpful was to create two Cakewalk Project folders:

    Cakewalk Projects 32
    Cakewalk Projects 64

You can change these in each version of SONAR so you don't mix the 32s and 64s. That kept me from trying to remember what was what.
