Sylenth1, Zebra or Rapture

With the last of my well earned Christmas $$......

I love Sylenth1's demo that I downloaded. I haven't checked out a demo version of Zebra yet, but heard some mp3s on the site for it that sound real good. Also, there is an upgrade path to Rapture for $99 I can get. I might have to go with Sylenth1 though. Just something about it that others don't seem to capture, for me anyway.

The only thing is I haven't seen Zebra any cheaper than $199, are there other sites like zzsounds, musicians friend, etc...that have it cheaper, or is it like Sylenth1... where it's only on the guy's (or girl's) webpage who programmed it?

The only thing about Sylenth1 is: it seems a bit more aimed at trance/techno, but I am sure it can be programmed any old way. It's pads sound great and the leads are insane.

    Hi Rob

I did buy Sylenth1 and really like it, only had it all but 2 days but like what I hear, and can't be objective since I haven't used it for a long time.. I also like Rapture, the muz3um pack is nice for LE even also, if you like LE then you'll like the full one more... zebra 2 also got good reviews. the guy behind it is ONE person, but people have said his support etc is very good as well as being a good programmer, people think he is super human..hehe

the other thing a lot of people use is re:fx nexus? but it's not exactly cheap (well for me anyway)

another thing you might like is karma fx synth, dunno if you know that? all the things you have mentions have got good reviews though.

Hey Fog, Merry Christmas by the way!

Arrg! I'm jealous!! I want Sylenth... ...Now!! hehe

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about fx nexus and karma fx synth, I will have to look into those.

And I do like Rapture LE, just haven't heard/seen all it can do in in the full version, except through online videos Brandon (from Cakewalk) has shown.

The zebra 2 guy sounds sorta like Wusik's WilliamK, one-man-gang on the programming and support. But WilliamK is really great, not sure how he does it, maybe superhuman like the Zebra2 programmer.

With the group buy, Sylenth1 is about $112 (through PayPal, ShareIt is a few dollars more). If you can get Rapture for $99, then it's a tough decision. I think both synths are geared more towards electronica. Dimension Pro tends toward more "normal" sounds with Garriton Pocket Orchestra, grand pianos, steel and electric guitars and other familiar instruments. Any of the synths can probably be programmed for just about anything you want. The question is how easy that is to do or whether presets exist for that.

If you are a tweaker and love to create your own sounds, then I would probably suggest Rapture. It has a lot of programming features. If you are more of a presets person, then I would lean more towards Sylenth1, and you can beef up the already large number of presets with more from www.VstSoundbanks.com. Great presets (if you like them) for a steal of a price. There are soundsets for Rapture (e.g., Galbanum), but they seem a bit pricey to me. You can get a free set from the PatchArena.

I have both Sylenth1 and Rapture. I looked at Zebra and finally decided that while it is highly regarded and has great support, it's more of a synth for someone who likes to tinker with sounds. That's not where I'm at right now. There are some soundsets available for it, but to get the most out of the synth, my impression is that you need to like spending time twiddling the knobs. As you said, it is also more expensive. I have read a discussion from the programmer that there will probably never be a sale price. If people like it enough, they will spend the money, and it seems to have a base of staunch supporters.

Some additional things you might consider is that Pro-Sounds is running a Christmas special on their PS-1 synth for $41. It comes with 1000 presets, and another bank is available for free. People who like Sylenth1 might also like Vanguard from reFX. It's $80, and it has 12 expansion sets for an additional cost, if you want more sounds.

You have lots of choices. I would suggest listening to audio demos and then getting demos of the synths themselves, if you can. See which ones produce the sounds you want, see how easy they are to work with and find out which ones match your work flow. After you've used a synth, that will help you decide what you like in a synth.

    merry Christmas Rob and Russell

Russell, I think in a recent review in CM , it was for omnisphere? I can't recall 100% anyway they said synleth1 was for aimed at tweakers, but it wasn't over complex to make your own. I got a few more patches off the KVR site for it also and there was some more I'm sure in an issue of CM.

Rob you have things like superwave p8? thats free.. alas I bought all 3 of the full versions and lets just say a lot of people aren't happy with superwave who vanished and left their registered users with the headache of no registration code when you upgraded your pc.
