Sync with a MOTU MTP AV USB

For years I've been using my old Music Quest 8PortSE parallel midi interface (yes, you can get WIN XP and WIN 7 drivers for it).  First with WinCake 3.1 all the way up to CakeWalk Pro 9.0 .  I mainly use Cakewalk for sequencing only since I do all my audio tracking with my Alesis HD24.  I also use an Alesis BRC to control the HD24...and run the SMPTE out of the BRC to the SMPTE in on the 8PortSE.  This syncs Cakewalk with my HD24 perfectly.

Now...I recently bought Sonar X1 and loaded it on my video editing computer (listed in my sig).  I also bought a used MOTU MTP AV USB on Ebay.  Since none of the new motherboards have parallel ports I figured I might as well upgrade to a USB midi interface.

My problem is...I can't figure out how to get Sonar X1 (or Cakewalk Pro 9.0) to sync using the MOTU.  With the old midi interface, all I had to do was put Cakewalk into sync mode, hit play and Cakewalk would go into standby mode "waiting for SMPTE timecode" and as soon as I hit play on the BRC Cakewalk would take off and sync right with the HD24.

I've been able to get the MOTU to recognize the SMPTE from the BRC...but neither CWP 9.0 or Sonar X1 will chase the timecode.  I guess my question is.....does the MOTU transmit the sync through the USB cable like the 8PortSE did through the parallel cable?  Or does it have to go thru midi?

I like my current workflow and want to continue to track on the HD24...but I do all my mixing ITB.  Currently I've been using Sony Vegas for mixing but that was another reason for getting Sonar X1...so I can start mixing with it.

But...I need to be able to sync Sonar with my BRC and that is my hold up right now.

Thanks for any help and advise.

If I remember correctly, clockworks has a menu for SMPTE slave mode for the mtpav.  I used to do the same with ADATs and a mtpav parallel, but its been a while.  The mtpav should also have the 9pin adat sync connector on the back of it. Is there a drop down menu in clockworks for that. Are you in trigger or freewheel mode? You might also have to activate MMC mode in Sonar.
Sorry these are my best guess scenarios without access to my studio.

Thanks Stonehedge....I think I JUST figured it out and got it chasing the SMPTE. I went into Clockworks and made up my own routing scheme deleting everything and routing the computer to MMC & MTC. I also went into the MOTU interface menu and chose LTC QuickLok as the Master Sync. I didn't need the 9 pin ADAT sync cable connected to the MOTU...actually it's going to the HD24. I always used the SMPTE out of the BRC to the SMPTE in on the midi interface before...and that's how I've got it working now. Thanks again so much...!

Glad you found the answer. I see you are a Sony Vegas user also. From the gear list, it looks like we probably share the same type of dual career. Shoot with the JVC HM750u here. I own but haven't loaded Vegas 11 yet. Waiting on a new win7 box and Sony to get 11 stable. Hope it is working well for you.
    Regards

Actually...the bugs in Vegas 11 is one of the reasons I wanted to dive into Sonar X1. I have been mixing on Vegas 8.0c and it was very stable. But since I got the Sony Z7U HD camera I upgraded to Vegas 11 because of the HD handling of video is supposedly much better. I haven't had too many problems with video, but trying to mix audio was a pain. I could have just stuck with 8.0c for audio, but then I got to reading about Sonar X1 and decided I had to have it :). One of the bugs in Vegas 11 that I found was a problem with the solo in the bus tracks....the solo does not work for bus tracks. If you solo a bus, it will solo that bus from other busses...but not solo from the rest of the tracks in the main track pane. And that is an important feature for me, being able to solo my busses. Thanks again for the reply...!
