Synth Sonata No 1-The Video

Ok I've posted this track before but without the video sampling project that was suppose to go with it.  This is because I never got around to putting together the images.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auQXwWu7fYE&context=C304eb1fADOEgsToPDskL4c2V9E7QZWZe1U4PK8BVB

I don't think people got the track last time around because I didn't have the video to go with the track.

The music and the video are suppose to complement each other.

As you will see in the video I was trying to convey the monotony of Launceston, this is the endless hum of traffic that pulsates through Launceston everyday.  Also the industral grime that permeates throughout Launceston.

You would be forgiven if you thought that this was just some negative video but I also wanted to convey how beautiful Launceston is too, in the Spring and Autumn the light changes colour, this is because we are close to the bottom of the world.  You can see how wonderful the trees look with the wind blowing through them and hopefully I have conveyed this as well.

A final mention this is not a perfect video and I was only warming up, I haven't done any video sampling for 10 years almost, so please forgive me if you deem it to be amateurish.

Peace Ben

Ps sorry the sound is not quite perfect, the conversion process has mangled a couple of spots.

No offence Ben but the vid did not float my boat.

The music did. The vid did not.

Maybe I'm just not artsy enough?

It is definitly interesting music. I wasn't bored and actually liked it. It's not a sonata though. The form is not fully there.

I did not watch the video. Sorry but I have tired eyes tonight. (I'm going blind). If I remember, I'll check it out at a later time.

    Nice work!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Thanks Guitarpima, no it's not quite a Sonata it's missing the key change in the middle but I think it's close enough to be called a Sonata, esp if we take the form of a Sonata as being the most malable form in terms of music.

Ben, I liked the music in this. The composition was nice, with the juxtaposition of the melodic sections with the industrial sounding parts. The vid was really irritating though, way too many repeat shots. If you took your time with the vid you could make this work a lot better.

This is a haunting piece of music. It doesn't really need a video to work, it stands on its own. I enjoyed your selection of instruments and industrial sounds; they play off each other quite well. Nice job.

Thanks for watching James and Lynn, James your right it is a bit half arsed.  I'm not going to justify it, all I will say is it's for my visual arts portfolio to try and get into a uni course (visual arts) and as I mentioned it was the first tme in a while I had used Vegas.  Vegas is the bastard cousin of Sonar, so I know my way around but not being able to turn off snap to grid and return the cursor to where it started would have made my life a little easier.  But no excuses.

Hey Lynn, yea I love the melody line in this peice myself, without the idea of the video the peice would not come out like it did, the sample is from the building in open shot.  it's amazing what comes to you when you switch of the internal chatter.  The sounds are all from the Dim Pro and was an attempt by me to understand string theory (music not physics) better.  I played almost all the instruments in myself and I will admit by sheer coincidence that the last violin phrase before the 2nd industrial bit comes in or before the devolpment phase of the sonata, is a bit like the melody from a King Crimson song called Waiting Man of the 1982 album Beat.

I don't think Fripp would sue me but it's pretty close.

    Thanks Ben

Thanks Grant, I'm glad you are not to pissed at me.  Yea the mix on this one isn't too bad, I went back and remasterd it unfortunatly the youtube conversion has knocked off some of the top and and you can hear a couple of glitches.

    Hi Ben,

It looks like you had fun with this project.  I agree with others that the video is flat.  I was amused at the traffic you refer to.  I lived in L.A. for many years and what I saw on your video looked like a small rural town compared to the city.  I did like the idea of nature vs. industry (or whatever) and even adding shots of fallen trees, ripped up plots of land, dead flowers, etc., might have added to that point.

Anyway, like the create work no matter what stage.  Keep it up!

Hey Rimshot, thanks for watching, you picked it this is a small country town.  I was trying to depict the two main highways that intersplice the town and juxtapose the monontey of those highways (you can see and hear these highways almost 24/7) with the beauty.  The whole point of using the same images is to emphasize the sameness of Lauceston.  I think that makes sence.

James, nice to see that we both can put aside our differences, thanks for watching, the synth is suppose to represent the industrial hum of the city (100,000 people) or for that matter any city, all cities hum and that is what that noise is about.

    Thanks for watching guys.

I really dig the music.  Great use of industrial sounds.  I really like the unusual nature of the song, especially at 2:04 when that one pulsating synth comes in and sounds out of key.  Excellent job!

    Hi, Ben,

Very unique and interesting, well textured synth work, and when combined with the video it begins to take on an almost abstract "industrial sonata" vibe with a bit of a sense of isolation throughout the piece.

I do agree with James, that a few additional scenes, or even some extra still shots, would keep the video a little more captivating.

Very cool and unique stuff, Ben, great work!
