Synthmaster on sale
$49.50 for the basic "factory" edition (minimal presets included), $64.50 for the "standard" edition (that's the one you want). I don't have this synth myself, but I did demo it extensively. Of all the synths I researched (and I hit 'em all) it came in second place, being only narrowly edged out by Zebra to win the spot as my go-to synthesizer. But considering that Zebra is $200 and Synthmaster covers a lot of the same ground for 1/3 the price, SM is a good lower-priced alternative. BTW, if money's tight this week don't sweat it...Synthmaster goes on sale often, although this is the best price I've seen since its initial introductory price. http://www.synthmaster.com/downloadupdates.aspx?referrer=ymlp

Thanks Dave, might just grab this one - plus a couple of the expansions, Nori Ubakata synth giants ones, took a listen and some of them are pretty darn good. Cheers - Cliff

You probably won't be sorry. At this price ... well, let's just say we're pretty close to no-brainer territory and leave it at that. And, yes, the Nori Ubakata sound sets are truly a delight. The nice thing about the pricing structure is that anyone can get the basic synth for a modest sum and add to the sound collection at a leasurely pace given that the "retail" prices of the expansion sounds are only about 15 bucks (and that's before sale discounts kick in).

I have a question about the expansions. Are they simply presets that utilize the features in Synthmaster, or do they contain extra waveforms, features etc. that would make those sounds impossible to program without the pack?

The Nori Ubukata "Art Rock Basics" and "Sounds of the World" add samples and sfz files. I believe most, if not all the rest are presets only.

Bought the everything upgrade during last year sale. Too many good sounds too little time to play or use. It is a good deal!

I just jumped in too. I have probably got close to 100 virtual synths and was just thinking yes all I need is another one! I must say though it sounds very beautiful and quite exquisite and also rather unique in its own lovely way. The sound quality of the demos don't do it justice and it is not really until you buy it and set it up on your computer and get stuck right in and play it that you really hear how good and detailed it can sound. Very nice instrument, some very inspiring sounds.

I'm pretty pleased with it. I wish there was a bit better way to audition the preset packs then just listening to the songs on their site, but the ones I bought seem to work well. I like the sounds, and they seem to be easy to tweak. The controls seem to be logical and easy to work with. Some synths it seems when I adjust anything it either does nothing, or completely f's up the sound. In particular I find many of them to be, I guess I'd say, "under control" compared to some other synths. One issue I've found with Z3ta and FM8 are that so many of their presets are just wild. You press a key and it plays on, and on, and on forever. Like they are trying to pack as much in to one note as the engine will allow. Makes things not very playable. Most of the presets here seem to just play the note you asked, and stop when you release. It is nice. I has a happy with it.
