Sysex, You never know until you ask.
I bought a Yamaha Montage synthesizer and think it has a great sounds. The "Super Knob" has some interesting possibilities but although you can record live into Sonar MIDI and it will record the Super Knob System Exclusive data, there's no way that I know of to edit it easily. I think Yamaha missed an opportunity to allow a CC to control the Knob. You can connect a foot pedal to the Montage so that will free up a hand if you playing live, so if you can control it with a pedal you would think it would be easy enough to control by MIDI. My question: is there any way to easily program sysex commands in the piano roll? I think not but I've been wrong once before. Walt

The way to look at sysex is its a dump from a MIDI device. All you do is essentially save the dump from the device. You can edit with a hex editor but I don't recommend that. One cool thing that Sonar can do is save sysex to a file that can be loaded later and used in any project. What is cool is you can name it a descriptive name thus you know what the heck it is.

No you cannot edit Sysex with the PRV. It either ALT+SHIFT+7 (Sysex view) and program banks and/or ALT+8 (Event list). Of course, if you love CAL, then there is always CAL

I assumed as much but was hoping that there some magic plug-in or whatever that would do the conversion. Kind of difficult since the code is device specific. I did look at the Sysex view this morning after recording "Super Knob" movements and all of the data was identical except for one column that was in hex code. I assume this records the position of the Knob. I've heard some rumors that Yamaha might make firmware changes to incorperate CC control of the Knob. At any rate it's a great synth. Walt
