. . TEXAS RANGER . .

HEY, everyone well I have a tune I wrote 20 years ago with my good friend Carl Meyers. It's the kind of tune you write when two guys are sitting around a campfire with acoustic guitars and alcohol. This is my acoustic version of TEXAS RANGER, so feel free to comment or make suggestions.

THANK YOU!

Great tune man. Nice relaxed vocal, well written story, and a cool tex-mex acoustic sound. I imagine a drum beat over this would have a super nasty groove. It works very well like this though.

Nicely done, it has the Texas type of feel from the beginning of the song (Ok, maybe the title gave it away...but still I'm sticking to my statement).

Cool acoustic recording. It doesn't have that over processed sound, very raw sound, which fits perfect for this song.

    Hey Kev,

That was cool, I had it cranked up on my monitors, and it's a fun listen. You're playing an Ovation, right? I'm curious because I liked the sound of the acoustic on this. Liked the vox and lyrics.

Crits: Maybe pull back the faders a bit on the acoustic while you're singing - according to my ears and rig anyway. Also, it ended about a minute too soon

    Good stuff Kev.

    Cheers,
    Doug

FRANK.... THANK YOU, really appreciate you listening.

JAMES.... I was hoping you would take the time to listen. Usually you are the man that gets to the meat of the tune. I must of done all-right in the recording end but flunked the history part.

ED....THANK YOU very much for the props. I try on the vocals, I must be getting a little better if I sound relaxed. THANKS AGAIN!

JON....I like the way you described that "RAW." THANKS again for the listen and props.

MICHAEL....I just couldn't think of anything else for the TEXAS RANGER to do. So I think short is better than long on this tune. THANKS, for the props and listen.

MARK.... Hey THANK YOU, very much for the kind words and all the props. I'm glad you took the time to listen it means alot.

JANET.... THANK YOU, very much for the kind words.

TOMJEFF.... I really do appreciate the listen and thanks for the groove props. THANKS AGAIN!

TONY....Back at YA! I really enjoy your tunes. THANKS for the listen.

RON....Head Rockin, Ill take those kind of props any day. THANKS!

DOUG.... Hey buddy thats what I wanted to hear a fun little tune. OVATION, you are correct , you are another one of those dudes that have great ears. THANKS for the listen.

DUDE.... I tried it live but couldn't get the vox to sit in the mix so I cheated, separate tracking. Hey, if it sounded live I take that as a great compliment. THANKS AGAIN!

LARRY....THANK YOU, I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and to leave such nice props. THANKS AGAIN!

MAN!! Love that guitar intro! that's very cool! you always seem to get a great recording on acoustic. I don't know Ovation from Washburn, but I know your acoustic sound is awesome! really good vox.

    great tune!

I feel like I'm in Texas with this.

    Guitar transients are excellent.

Vox needs to go up a dcb, IMHO. "And my Momma cried" hook needs 2 dcbs.

    This is astonishing work.

Thank you for such skilled guitar and singing.

yep, lovely recording on the acoustic. i need to get a decent acoustic... nice acoustic southern rock, the vox are excellent, maybe a few more whiskeys and cigars would give a more authentic gravelly tone! too short, needs a break - maybe some harmonica - and then a reprise.

REECE....THANK YOU very much for the props. I take that as a great compliment on the acoustic sounds coming from you. Ovations are not really the best sounding guitars. THANKS AGAIN.

PHILIP....Skilled guitar playing and singing thats a first for me. I had to go get the wife and show her this review. She still thinks your talking about someone other than me. I really do appreciate the kind words and the listen. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

MARK....THANKS, so much for the props and the listen. I'll stick to yelling at the wife for the gravelly voice, its not as fun but its cheaper. THANKS AGAIN!

    Hi Kev,

Very cool groove to this, lovely acoustic playing.

Lyrically I think you lost your way a bit, especially the last verse, which didn't really wrap the song up for me. I couldn't quite grasp why your momma was crying in case you didn't return home (1:43) when your daddy was the one in the gunfight..

Still good though, nice job on the vocals.

THANKS James. To answer your question, I'm going to do what anyone else would do in this situation and blame the lyrics on my partner who help write the tune. Thanks for the props on the playing of the guitar. I really do appreciate you taking time out to listen. THANKS AGAIN!

What a killer tune. Man I totally dig the guitar work & the grindy fret sounds you got. Did you have a mic aimed at the neck or something?

Vocals are primo. Great groove, and that rattlesnake percussion is just perfect!

I thought about that for a long time, too. Maybe the son, disgusted with the violence, packed up and left town? Meh, I'm probably reading too deep into it, but that's the beauty of short pieces like this. You can interpret it in a million ways.

    Great job, dsk!!

SPACEDUCK....THANKS, for the great review on the song. The fret sounds are from using a dynamic mic pointed just a bit away from the hole, at the joint of the body meets the neck. That was only me playing but I have a funky way I strum, king of like playing a drum. I tend to play that way all the time thats why I think all my songs sound the same. Hey, but THANK YOU very much for the listen. I'm a big fan of Cynthia Centipede.

    Kev,
Sorry it's taken me so long to pop in.....i'm in a flurry over here
another cool cool song for sure. I love the little rhythmic shifts between sections...very catchy hook.
I know this would just be a real boiler with some elec bass and drums...(i'm loving the acoustic but it's speaking to me from the pop ethers.)

    Kev.

Not sure it matters here if the Ranger is wasting 'Gringo's' or frying beans the song evokes all the right moods and makes the BS seem real enough.

Lovely vox, and a nice choppy strum and the fundamental simplicity is captured nicely, it would work nice as a pop tune but stands up as it is....you'd be welcome to come round here and play stuff like this round the 'camp fire' anyday.

Very cool song on many levels. It sounds fantastic.

I am not usually one to comment on lyrics (not sure I have ever actually), but in this case I found them to be the songs weak link. To be blunt, I found them a bit cliché.

What stood out most was the "My Father was..." which in music is akin to "It was a dark and Stormy night" in novel writing IMO.

You have a rhythm with the guitar that they should have hit on, but did not seem to. I would go more with something like:

    he straps on his colt
    he pins on his badge
    stepping out the door
    he salutes the flag
    Red White and Blue
    he needs nothing more

    He is a texas ranger...

    She watches him go
    worry lines her eyes
    every moment he is gone
    what happens if he dies

See where I am going... tell a story... a day in the life off...

I realize this may be a true story, which if it is, gives you a unique insight into the life of a Ranger and his family that you can convey with out being directly involved. This allows the listener to relate to the protagonist without having to relate to you as well (makes it easier to relate to).

Hope you take this the way it was intended. I think you have a really cool tune that just needs cool lyrics to kick it into the next level.

    Cheers
    Shad

    Kev,

This is a great song! I love the raw unplugged feel of this. Great guitar and vox, and the shaker and vibraslap are perfect in this tune. I'd like to hear a little more bottom end in the vocal - sounds like it's high-passed and in this context it could stand to sound beefier, EQ wise, especially since the guitar isn't bass heavy.

    Great stuff, Kev!
