TH2 Producer - Wow!

After getting bored with Guitar Rig 5 I decided to some A/B with other sims I have.  One them is TH2 as included with Platinum.

Clumsy, fugly UI aside, it sounds VERY VERY good.  I hadn't tried it before yesterday evening.  Wow.

Many here love it...

I find it marginally acceptable...but that's just me...

The upgrade to the full version was just on sale...

What do you think of GR5?

I also have recently used ReValver IIIdotV, which has some decent tones in it as well.

What are you using?

I agree, TH2 is awesome! Full version is worth the upgrade IMO. I use GR5 as well, but TH2 is my go to amp sim

I have just about all of them.

My go to has become S-Gear.  The sound out of that is awe-inspiring...
And I'm a rock guy.  The effects are staggeringly good.

Just installed and played with Amplitube 4...verdict still yet to be determined.
Initial impressions were good...but not WOW...

I also have Bias Amp and Bias FX, which are quite nice...
TH2 Producer has rarely been used after my initial "run" with it...
Recabinet 4 it nice but limited...
GR5 used to be my "go to" but has become dated and "eh"...

Like Jimmy Durante used to say...

Ahh cha cha cha...I've got a million of 'em...LOL

I really do like many of the sounds in TH2, but the interface bugs me so much (as does the preset/saving system) that I rarely use it.  After getting S Gear, I have very little need for anything else (unless I need specific guitar effects like a fuzzface or something, then TH2 or Guitar Rig gets fired up).

Re: TH2 Producer - Wow! 2015/10/29 14:07:51 (permalink)
I've tried a bunch of them...... I've tried TH2 producer several times, but really don't like the setup, and haven't been able to get any sound I like out of it (probably my fault for not really spending enough time with it)

I've got GR 4.....never that inspired...although I liked it better with the Rammfire stuff

S-Gear....love it....it was inexpensive, and sounds good...and he's added a lot of stuff to it since it's original release...

Amplitube 3....that's MY goto....that's the one that I seem to mesh with the best  (although S-gear is a very close second...anyone who hasn't tried that one...I would say go for it)

Others have come and gone....many of which I can't even remember the names....so, I couldn't have been that enthralled.

I've been considering getting Amplitube 4...but...I always wonder with some of these things if you're paying mostly for a snazzy looking new GUI....  if it's REALLY better than A3, I'll get onboard....but...I'll wait and hear the opinions of those here...

I have no favorite. I have TH2, GR5, AmpliTube and the Waves sim, all of them have "won" for me at one time or another in a particular track. I love the Waves one for amping synths though.

BobF,

Keep P5 alive..., long live the memories....

I have the box in my cabinet and I look at it daily.  Sometimes I think about trying to install it onto my current computer but I am fearful of what may happen to Sonar X3e.   I saved all of the midi and the audio from it before I uninstalled it years ago, and use it currently in Sonar X3e.

Hey Jesse ... I could use that V2 glyph.  I have 2.5 installed, but I couldn't find anything fresh ...

At this point, I REALLY wish Cake would tear the Pattern/Step/PR editor out of P5 and add it to Sonar as an alternate editor.  I can't believe they actually dink around with that poor excuse of a step sequencer in Sonar when they have a perfectly good one in the code drawer collecting dust.

IMO, they would do well to incorporate the whole of P5 into Sonar.  That would give them a huge step forward for the EDM crowd, IMO.  Not that I'm one of *them* - LOL

The box that P5v1 came in was very very cool as was P5 itself (magazine reviews considered it better than Propellerheads Reason). It was my first "bought" daw after I got a free Sonar version with a soundcard. P5v2 was a big step up and had some excellent features - it let you easily add a third party audio editor for eg, something we still can't do in Sonar. It was not to dissimilar from Ableton. But there were downsides- no multicore support and remember trying to draw in fade outs? :)

The best amp sims for TH2 are in the full version. The Brunetti amps have become a mainstay for me in Jazz, country, hard rock, pop, etc.... I don't do much metal at all and not much shredding. When I do it's usually thru Amplitube. Especially now since I just got 4. For that great boutique amp sound you can't beat the Brunettis! There are also a few more FX stomps in the full version of TH2. Well worth the money!

Sonar Platinum, Sonar X3e, Sonar X2a , Sonar X1 Expanded and 8.5.3 (32 and 64 bit), Windows 10 on a Toshiba P75-A7200 Laptop with i7 @ 2.4 quad and 8 gigs of RAM and secondary WD 1 Tb drive, Windows 10 desktop, Asus i5 @ 3.2 quad, 12 gigs RAM, 1 Tb drive, 1 500 gig drive, MOTU 24io, 2 Roland Studio Captures, Saffire 6 USB for laptop, Soundtracs Topaz Project 8 mixer, Alesis Monitor 2s, Event BAS 20/20s, Roland Micro-Monitor BA-8s, and 45 years worth of collecting FX, Mics, Amps, Guitars, and Keyboards!

The joy of P5v2 was that I could have a project up and running in no time, and the sounds created,  Oh my Goodness!   I tried Abelton Live and it was good, but I loved P5 much better.  I remember going to Cakewalk P5 Guitar Center sessions to learn more about the software and to get discounts on additional software.  My first purchase of Z3ta was from a P5 Guitar Center session.

Its weird that for me, one time I will run TH2 and it will sound great, the next time not so much.  I definitely agree with the preset system.  It amazes me that a company that can do a pretty good job of amp simulation can't figure out a reasonable preset system.

Many a great plugin ruined by poor preset management. Reaktor and its "snapshots." Ohmicide and its "banks." And of course TH2. Load sound? Load variation? Erm.....

If I want to get really creative I insert TH2 and set up an amp, then strip it for everything else and place an instance of GR5 after it and use that for micing, sometimes the cab sim, special effects etc. Pretty cool actually. No amp sim is 100% IMO so it's cool to be able to mix and match a little. Save as a track preset and recall at will.

I've been working quite a bit with real amps using direct outs (or Red Box + load) into GR5 for effects & cab/mic (except RB5).

I added a Laney IRT Studio earlier this year.  It has great studio features and darn good tones too.

Don't really dig TH2 user-(un)friendly interface. I prefer to use track templates or CA-X amps instead.

Ditto again....  I really do like the CA-X amps and have found few cases where they didn't do the job for me, with less fiddling.   I mean, there are only a handful of knobs and buttons, but more important IMO, there are no presets.

I'm dumb, I'll admit it... but a loooooong time ago I upgraded to the full version and couldn't make it save presets, remember the settings when saving a song, ya know... all the things a singer/songwriter ain't necessarily good at, especially a dumb one like me.

I hope they get their crap together... as it is, TH2 is just another dead vst on my maschine...still using A3, soon to be 4 and GR5...as well as the native sounds in all of Greg's awesome OT stuff.... boy that S-gear stuff sounds nice, Larry...

I have the free Revalver which comes with a couple amps, and they really are nice.  There is a Classic 50 crunch amp that is perfect for that mid-dirty crunchy rhythm thing.  They would prob. be even better with better cab sims replacing the ones it has.

What does anyone think of Revalver?
I like the heavy distortion presets.

I have ReValver IIIdotV.  It has some very nice sounds in it too.  I doubt I'll ever find one sim or amp that does it all.  I do wish TH2 had a different GUI.  Way too much empty space in the design.  In fact, I find it such a PITA to use I prolly won't be upgrading it.  That's one thing I do like a lot about GR5 - IMO, they got the GUI right.
