"THE LOTUS EATERS" {live track w/ minimal production}

this is a kind of crappy live studio recording as a sketch for an interesting song. i went in afterwards and simply doubled the live vocal and added some recorded phone conversations that my bass player Dan used to make when we all lived together as a band few years back (he's quite and odd one as we all are lol). the first is that pulsating landline-off-the-hook sound that was droning after my girlfriend broke up with me over the phone and hung up with me sitting in the room ready to hang myself. then there are other snippets of conversations that Dan recorded eg my dad calling after a business trip and asking about one of our gigs & Dan accidentally cutting him off and yelling '****', my drummer Rob (whose house we lived at) and his wife in a drunken argument, Dan telling my dad about my hospital stay for a hemorrhoid removal etc... just weird trippy ****. my guitar in this is tuned to an open E♭sus2/add9 chord [E♭, B♭, E♭, F, B♭, E♭].

THE LOTUS EATERS (rough demo)
© 2012 MRI / Words & Music by Daren Thomas Turner
----------------------------------------
you may find me smoking in a field
and the flowers on the pond
are floating over me
they tasted good, know what i mean?

you saw me visiting the sun
and the atmosphere was warm
and i'm telling everyone
the lemonade was made by me
you drank it too, how did it feel?

do you remember driving in my car?
and we didn't drive fast
but we drove it too far
where did we go, what did it mean?
i recall sitting on a fence
and the poppies grew high and so were my friends
they danced like visions in the sky
i can't complain i did not die

you saw me walking in the street
you could tell by hands that i needed new feet
what could i say, what could i do?
i found some needle and some thread
and i stitched me some yarn and i stitched it to my head
i didn't know i went too deep
i didn't know it played for keeps...

i bought some sugar at the store
to sweeten all the liquid that tasted all the more
like candy canes and créme de menthe
i though that reasons for the more
was after the though of reasons from before
you though it too, i've seen you since
you didn't laugh, you little ****...

    Hey, Daren,

Very unique sounding experimental style song with a cool retro feel!

It kind of reminds me of a 1970's psychedelic song mixed in with a more modern Smashing Pumpkins vibe, and the added phone effects keep things interesting and moving along nicely during the second half.

    Good stuff!

Fantastic, Daren.  Your versatility and originality are on display.  Are you writing these as you go, or, are you pulling them out of the vault?  No matter, I like the fact that one never knows what you're going to produce next.  I love the element of surprise in a songwriter.  I also like the fact that your vocal level is up there where the lyric sheet is no longer necessary, though I love your lyrics, and I enjoy reading them.  This may be a sketch, but it sure sounds polished to me.  Where's it gonna end?

    All the best,

*thanks Bob- yeah since this is quite 'minimalist', basically being a live power trio studio recording, i thought the phone thing would add a nice oddly interesting texture which worked for me.  & yeah when i don't layer vocal harmonies i sometimes get the pumpkins feedback.

*cool Lynn; to answer your question it's a bit of both, yet none of the vault stuff in Cubase was ever finished or even mixed down and i've only recently learned Logic to attempt to put them together in a remotely listen-able fashion. i've written about 100 or so songs in past three years so i'm trying to mix/master them to suit my ears and also trash the ones that suck. i'm constantly recording and creating. i think everyone here can relate to that LOL

    Well done!

cool. yeah this was bare minimalism in its quintessence. didn't even use a click (so we speed up a little at the end) i agree with you about not being 'about production' all the time, but feel instead, as opposed to other MRI tracks like Helicopter Head, which i produced the hell out of.

& yeah i thought the avatar was a better choice then the three of us standing like idiots trying to look cool lol

    thanks Bapu

Trippy is the only word I can think of!  I think I might have been in that living room once.  LOL!  The vocal threw me off.  I thought it was in a total different key at times and it probably was, the way you planned it.  It gives the song that "my head feels crooked" feeling that I get with some songs.  Now, that's a good thing cause it sticks in my head and that's what music should do.  I had it really cranked up and couldn't pick up on all the conversations, a bit muddy, but the idea comes across because I read your intro.  Gheeesh, this thing is in my head and now it's crooked.  Thanks!  :-)

cool & thanks dude- yeah since we live tracked this i had a set of phones on both ears which caused me to sing flat, about 1/4 tone off in some places, more in others, esp in the 1st clean guitar part, which listening back i noticed gave it that 'tilted' feel...which worked rather perfectly with the 'ambiance' and theme of song, so i kept it, and emulated as best as possible when i doubled the vocal. I'm also playing through an old Ampeg VT-22 which survived a hurricane ablution so it had this odd unique tone that seemed appropriate, the crappy mic i used on it seasoned it even further- & yeah i think i saw you in the living room ;p was a great party indeed lol

hey thanks Janet, Vincent & Makke. i was almost reluctant to post this at first due to its rawness and production-less-ness, but i liked the concept so very glad the grunge-alt thing is somewhat working here & also gelling with the additional weirdness LOL - very cool :)  cheers!
