TIP: Installing memtest onto a USB Key

I had an issue this past weekend and just wanted to pass on what I learned for those who are in need of this information. The following are instructions on how to install and use memtest via a USB key/flash drive.

You can put memtest on a usb drive and boot your PC from the usb drive.
Heres the link to download memtest for usb drive. http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
Download auto installer for usb key. Insert your usb key, go to my computer, find your usb key drive, right click on it, select formay, select FAT, and format the key. Keep in mind that you will loose anything on the key.
Now click on the installer that you downloaded and point the installer to your newly formatted usb key. Plug the usb key into your daw and reboot, I didn't have to go to the boot screen, my daw booted right from the usb key, and memtest began running. My daw never sees the internet so I used a different PC to download and install memtest onto my Usb key.

Bad RAM was an issue I had, too. My PC passed the superficial tests but was nevertheless faulty, so do use the intensive tests.

I'm stoked lots of apps can run on a usb thumb drive now.  Everyone should have an audio usb stick. Besides memtest, ce latency checker, rew (room analysis), audacity portable with mp3 encoder, etc. Great toolkit in the pocket.

Another tip ... for those running Windows 7, don't dismiss Window's 7 Memory Diagnostics. I had a problem with RAM one time that MemTest couldn't find, but Window's Mem Diag found in 5 minutes. I think with something like RAM it's probably good practice to test it with more than one piece of software.

The USB tip is sweet. Those CD ISO's were a pain in the butt to mess with.

"...CD ISO's were a pain in the butt...'

If you're using Windows 7, the built-in burner program will recognize an *.ISO file, and burn it as a disk image.
