spacey We know there are many types of people with many attitudes. I can understand how one can be bothered by anothers words or actions but in truth I've always been more concerned with understanding how I felt and what I knew so I listen to determine if any information is worth retaining for my benefit. Whether or not another can or can't read is of no matter to me. Their attitude is of no matter to me personally. When those traits do matter is when I have to work, study or perform with another musician. Before committing to working with them these type of things are good to know for the sake of compatibility. In the past I can say I had no problem with musicians that couldn't read but I did have problems with the ones that had "different" attitudes. One big attitude issue is when a musician is more concerned about others performance more than they are of their own. great post.

@ spacey i have never had trouble with such bad attituded persons but i read and heard what they were talking and thinking. and at first sight after so much technical and do re mi talk i was thinking they must be genius so i went listening to some tracks and All i can say is BLAAAH. and on top of that how they treated other not so advanced musicians were really disgusting. I've been making music since 98 but never treated not a single person that way. i am a bit dissappointed about the fact that some still try to attack me with words just for asking for others opinions about that case here. i haven't read on the net such open dialogueabout this Thema so what's wrong??? and as you can see many peoples=many opinions i guess there are many people who think about this like i do. my English is really too misarable so plz dont missinterpret me. thanks

Boomin36Beatz A GUITARIST HAS HIS GUITAR. A PIANO PLAYER HIS PIANO. AND ETC... ETC... AND I HAVE SONAR :-) I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT EXACTLY. BUT SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO CAN READ NOTES THINK THAT THEY ARE SOMETHING SPECIAL. BUT THE FACT IS THEY ARE IGNORANT AND SO SO BLIND. 2000 YEARS AGO 99% OF THE HUMAN BEINGS ON THIS LILL BEATIFULL BLUE PLANET COULD NOT READ BUT WE ARE STILL ALIVE AREN'T WE? AND MUSIC HAD BEEN ALREADY EXIST BEFORE BACH,MOZART AND CO. ??? let us wait a few hundreds years and you will see an Instrument that can visualize brain impulses and turn it into music. then everybody will get his dream music and will be totaly satisfied. i started this topic because of some stupid people that i met in real life and online. like i said, i didn't like their "music" and i was amused about so much foolishness. i hope now you see my point of view. and i just wanted to if I am the only person that thinks that way. sorry for my miserable English and thanks for sharing your real opinion PEACE!!! You could also say that "some of the people who don't read notes think that they are something special." It works both ways. I've known guitarists who were snobby about people who can sight read, and thought they themselves were superior because everything they play is "from the heart" or whatever. Yes, there may be a few people who learned their instrument with written music and never learned to play off the cuff. But what you'll mostly find is that sight reading is just one string in the bow of a musician, and that if they love to play their instrument they can improvise from the heart as well. You seem to discount sight reading as a skill. Why? You say that 2000 years ago, 99% of humans couldn't read. Of course - but there is a little concept called "progress" which has improved our general living standards tremendously. 2000 years ago, nobody could perform open heart surgery. 2000 years ago, the average life expectancy was a little over 30 years old. Ignorance was widespread. You cannot deny that the written word enriched the spread of knowledge, and that the written note enriched the spread of music. If you can get by without reading music then fine...many people do. But be aware that those who dismiss musical literacy could also be seen as "ignorant and blind."

Boomin I don't know what you're native language is but I can say you're doing much better than if I should attempt yours. :) Sometimes it is very hard to tell if somebody is giving somebody a hard time or if it's just a communication problem. At this forum I'd suspect it's a communication breakdown. I can tell you that I've been here for a very long time and the only thing that I can think of that would be better than getting to talk to this bunch of people would be meeting them. Nobody here is going to intentionally attack you and try to upset you or hurt your feelings. ( unless you really, really push them and I sure don't think that's a good thing) You have found one of the best places on the internet to talk with other people that share your musical interests. I hope you have a great time here and don't worry about the language...people will understand that and ask if they are not sure they understood you correctly. You will find there are different forums here. The songs forum is a great place to share music if you are recording. Also a great place to listen to others. The Coffee House is a place for just talking about much of nothing or a lot of something. And if you need help or want to help others with the different Cakewalk versions there are specific forums for that. Hope you have a great time here Boomin.

I do not understand your assertion that "nowadays with such instruments like Sonar I think there is no need for learning notes." You're missing the point, which is that learning notes widens your set of skills and increases the potential of your musical career. There is a whole side of music which requires reading. You don't have to take part in that side of music if you don't want to, but if you do, you're simply going to have to learn how to communicate in the universal language of music notation. But, if you're happy and/or successful in a narrow field of music that doesn't require sight reading, then great. What's the problem?

Jonbouy ...One thing doesn't exclude the other, in that form it's usually a question posed by people that feel insecure about having no musical education. I you feel like that then get some education, otherwise keep making slamming tracks and just enjoy doing so. Being able to read and write though will certainly provide you with more opportunities for getting work whatever language you choose to adopt. Agreed. It really depends on what you are doing and who you are doing it with. If you are doing Beethoven's 9th, or Roll Over Beethoven, yeah ... you're gonna have to do the note per note thing, and not variate a whole lot ... because your audience is gonna grade you on how many notes you missed ... too many and you are a bum! But if you are doing original music ... who the hell, can tell if you are improvising or not? ... there is no point of reference! And this, above all else, is the main reason why I tell people to not do anything that is not of their own ... you are automatically an idiot and a bum and can not gain a nickel, even if your version is better than the original, which happens many times. But there are way too many college/school folks that still think that their scores is the only music there is ... no girls for you! That's ok ... get that paper degree. We'll still see you on the street looking for a job!

Don't learn how to read notes and remember you won't play as well as some others who can add MIDI notes on a staff and have the computer able to play music that you and others can not. It would take a concert pianist perhaps or someone well versed already famous and most people left in the dust.

<sigh> Here we go again... When one cannot read, there are many types of music one cannot perform or create (and yes, with sample libraries like VSL, and the like, people still create them). OTOH, without the ability to improvise, or play well by ear, there are also many types of music that one cannot perform or create. I find it very sad when an individual takes it upon himself to blast either one or the other. I do find it interesting that the "blast" usually regards something the "blaster" does not have the skill set to perform/create. Since one doesn't have the skill set, that music must be worthless.

It's all important. Notation, playing skills, intuitive feel. Some people are good at sight reading and playing, it's a practiced art just like all the rest. If you ran into some snobs, so what. If they're not willing to work with you based on the fact you don't excell in that area of music, give them the big hidi ho. On the same note, if you're not willing to learn those methods and how to work with them, the big hidi ho again. Everyone has their own genius, there are levels of fluency amoung professional musicians which amounts to understanding the technical language of music. That technical language can get quite huge with modern music and electronic equipment, synthesizers, etc. It's all relative. Hidi Ho.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be more of a skipping bass, since a walking bass would likely include a B and a D as part of the walk up. And Beagle, yes about the running joke, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, a single A could be A, Am, Aaug, Adim, A6, A7, Amin7, Adim7, A9, Am9, A11, A13, among others.
